Villa's Battle For 4th - Update 8

The battle for fourth update... Last one: Villa's Battle For 4th - Update 7

The verdict: A win, but it's not enough!

Good victory away at Pompey yesterday, and quite an entertaining game to watch too I thought… Carew scored a well taken goal but then missed a penalty, and Delfouneso opened his premier league account.

But where does that leave us after Tottenham' s excellent result against Chelsea?

The verdict is - needing some results to go our way! It's still possible if we win all our remaining games, but it's unlikely really now. Anyway, here's how I see things:

4th - Tottenham - 69 points
5th - Man City - 68 points
6th - Villa - 66 points
7th - Liverpool - 64 points
8th - Everton - 61 points

We will hopefully beat Blues at home too, which would boost us up to the 68 point mark - enough to grab 4th most seasons! With our cup runs too, and finishing above Liverpool, I'd see that as a successful season, despite what some fans may say. Also, when you factor in the improvement in the likes of spurs and city, it's not too shabby at all.

Hopefully this season has one final nice twist for us all! UTV!

Sorry. The last 3 home draws cost us any chance of a 4th place finish. Besides, we just don't look like we are any where near a 'Top 4' quality side. Our bench is one of the worst in the top half of the PL - and that's after 4 years of MON's 'hard work' in the transfer market!

Home draws have killed our season, and this to me points at a lack of 'plan b', simple as! Still, there's a lot to be happy about, and I for one think we are still makign progress. VOTN, I know we shouldn't measure ourselves against other's progress but Man City are a case apart, with their money it's hard to expect us to complete, yet.... And Spurds have had many more years of investment than we have to get to where they are, and they're still not much better off than us. Keep the faith brothers!

Citeh and Spuds have to play each other. If we win at Citeh it could be game on, provided Hull (1-2) and the Blouse (3-1) have also bitten the dust. We can get to 70pts, but 68 is more realistic. If Spuds beat Citeh we are finished with 4th, but at least we should be above Liverpool with the games we have left. Class of 82, spot on, too many home draws, same number of defeats as Chelsea. More clinical up front and we'd be challenging for the title.

have to agree splatt, no one can judge themselves against the obscene City spending.

Spuds have muddied the water and put themselves in front of the pack by beating Chelski and the Arse. They can lose to Manure and Citeh but still beat Bolton and Burnley and finish on 70 points. We can look at draws at home to WHU, Wolves and Sunderland as reasons why we will probably miss out on 4th (but it is not over yet) but alternatively wins at Redscouse, Manure and Small Heath who have a reasonable home record) have contributed to us still being in the shake up. Should we win on Wednesday then both Citeh and Spuds will start twitching and you never know how teams will react then. Look at Spuds defeat to Pompey of how pressure can have an effect on what would normally be considered a 'banker' result. Should we beat both Hull and Small Heath then the game against Citeh could be huge. TBAR

Spuds have already bottled this race before gents, they called it Lasagne gate, I think that it was just a case of no bottle/realising that they weren't good enough and not wanting to embarrass themselves in Europe. They are nowhere near as good away from home so should be a loss at Manure but they only need 2 out of 4 wins to clinch it IMO. Mancity won't trouble them or us but the 7-1 to Chelsea has cocked up our goal difference.
