O'Neill Pleased With Player Reaction

In Martin O'Neill's post Bolton verdict he admits he was pleased to see the squad put in a determined performance following our Chelsea disaster.

Speaking on the Official Site O'Neill said the players were determined to put things right and get us back to winning ways after another disasterous month of March in the league (albeit we did finally pick up a single win) and after seeing the match he called it a 'great reaction'.

'I'm delighted with the team, we played very poorly last week and I think the players were determined to put it right here.'

O'Neill did admit a little disappointment that we again failed to put the match beyond the opposition leading to us having a somewhat nervy final 20 minutes but overall it was only a slight disappointment.

He was far more interested in the reaction of the away fans both given the Chelsea drubbing and the rumours of his departure this week.

'I don't want to sound really melodramatic but I was overwhelmed by the reaction. It was nice and I appreciated it greatly.'

Was never really in doubt from the away contingent was it. But I know quite a few will have appreciated Monny picking them out for praise after some 'wayward' fan comments in the past.

Sadly 4th place I think realistically is beyond us now given the points we have dropped and the games in hand we have wasted but the season is far from over and there is still plenty to play for.

A good strong finish to the season now will do us the world of good.

I'm sure Martin will use John Terry's words from last week to inspire the boys to give a good showing against Chelsea next week .

Anything up to 6th will be acceptable as we are still to thin for anythng but an embarassing CL attempt...however a strong Europa run will be more than doable. Also, the likes of Bent or Jones and Benayoun will accept that at this point in their careers.

Hey - credit where it`s due,a tough place to go at with the state we were in and they got a result for him, well done all x

I was upset that wasn't giving any credit to the fans that do support the team,he did that today, all is forgiven

Certainly praise for the Villa support is welcome, but it may be a case of too little, too late. With the support our away fans give, praise for them should be the norm. And no manager should ever criticise his own fans, or disrespect the club. The big game is next Saturday, and hopefully we'll have another big game after that one.

Finally got my semi final ticket today. It was my window to buy last Monday but I really couldn't find the mental strength to go through with it after last Saturday. Nice to finally pick up three points esp with Spuds losing. Chelsea are gonna think they can just turn up next week which could just play into our hands. Big Ron made a good point today. Crystal Palace once lost 0-9 to Liverpool and then beat them in the FA Cup semi final that same season. Take heart my friends. We can do it!! UT!
