'If It's Football, It's Vital'

O'Neill Vows To Bounce Back

Martin O'Neill has vowed to lift the spirits of the squad after our disasterous defeat to Chelsea last weekend.

Speaking on the Official Site O'Neill was upbeat about our chances in the coming weeks and admitted his surprise at the weekends result given how well we've played all season.

'The buck stops with me, it's my responsibility and we have got a week now to prepare for Bolton and a week after that the semi final.'

Monny also admitted that he was happy we had no more midweek games for the obvious reasons, but stopped short of blaming tiredness or even implying that it had any baring on the result.

'Please don't even go there - that was nothing to do with whether we had a midweek game or not. We've shown a lot more desire and a lot more character than we did against Chelsea and that is totally my responsibility.'

Returning to the fact that he just didn't see such a result coming, and nor did the players we are reminded of our defensive record and the 'glorious moments' we've had this season aswell.

'We've been battling on all fronts domestically since the start of the year so I think from that viewpoint I'm not even sure the players could see that coming.

'That is the biggest disappointment because they have really been terrific all year.'

We have been terrific for the first half of agmes all season (generally) but I think we have had second half syndrome for a long time now. Mon is still not facing reality. Hopefully the players will realise and start to pace themselves. Poor second half performance usually indicates a knackered midfiled, leading to a knackered and stretched defence.

Hopefully what Terry said about how we tire after 60mins will give players and manager extra focus for last 7/8 games.
