Manager 'Devastated' As Villa Capitulate v Chelsea

Martin O'Neill has spoken about a 'tough lesson' at Stamford Bridge today and admits that Villa 'capitulated' making it a 'devastating' result for him.

'It was as devastating as I've had in the game. I've been in the game as a player and a manager quite some considerable time and you get taught quite a few lessons on the way and that was a tough as any.'

He says they know they'll have to do better at Wembley.

'We have to fight back and we intend to do so. From our own viewpoint, that wasn't good enough. In terms of finishing fourth - on that performance we wouldn't finish 44th.

Dunno what happened to your boys today. Not impressed with them trying to ruin the title race. At least this will put an end to all the Martin O'Neill to succeed Fergie nonsense. I've got more chance of getting the job.

But it isn't form on this one game, can anyone remember the last time we won two league games in a row, it is relegation form and has been for a while, 3 wins in 14, 1 win in last 7 home league games, hello wakey wakey

On that performance MON you would be lucky not to get relegated no need to even mention top four that just makes the embaressment worse.

I'm well depressed about this one guys. Chelsea are good, no mistake. BUT that good....no way. I would never have used Sidwell from the start in such an important game as he's hardley played with Petrov this season. Downing should have been there and Cuellar into centre of defence with Collins taking a break. Look at our bench....NO striker...No experience....no way we get sixth or fifth! I am a staunch supporter of MoN but he must take a risk on a expensive quality striker and a quality central / attacking midfielder next seaon. Kenwyne Jones, Huntelaar, Bent, Benayoun, SOMEBODY....but at this time we are slumping AGAIN. Yes we've achieved more in the Cups this season and that will take it's toll on a squad with very new players who need a seaon to really gel....but this defeat was terrible and I'm sure MoN will strengthen....cheeky bid for O'Hara anyone?

Block the players wages...to lose like that at this stage of the season......woeful.

Bring in Bellamy...his heart is undeniable. Seriously, we're too nice a team. We need some MEN up front and a few tought tacklers in midfield.

I feel just like last season we've punched above our weight and martin has to take credit for that, but just like last season we missed a trick in january once again. We simply had to get a quality frontman in that window no matter what the cost, even a loan would of done us till the summer. What hurts the most is that we'll do the same next year unless martin gets more aggressive in the transfer market and takes some risks.
SidGodSid
Hmmm devastated, I think the people who are devstated are those that pay the wages of players and manager alike. Sure the players need a rest but maybe management needs a vacation!

This has been coming and lack of rotation and using same tactics has caught up with MON. This is a slap in the face for the fans and can we pick ourselves up from this?? Dreading the cup semi now! Has to be stronger, better new faces inn the summer otherwise we stagnate around the also rans year in year out. Soz.
holte ender 1969
hopefully MON saying "taught a few lessons..." means he is forced to have a look at some of the issues the fans have been on about.... holte ender 1969 - its not so much a slap in the face for us - but for MON, and how he is going confront it...

I agree Leftfoot. To lose in that way was hard to accept for any fan of any team and so are we about to see what he (MON) can do about restoring confidence to a "tired" team. Its a fact that certain players carrying slight injuries should have been rested. I do have to say tho that we did stand toe to toe with chelski for the first 35 mins but then we seemed to die. There's time to turn this around and show some spirit now and guile.

Chelsea are a great side wo we are seeing over reaction here. don't lose sight of where we are.

Can`t remember any team in top 10 conceding 7 goals.i`ve never rated MON as highly as most people but this shows how poor we`ve become.

spurs fan here.wtf happened? i think chelsea were there for the taking as well with some of the injuries but that was truly pathetic.anyway hope you beat them in the cup and i think you actually will.the players pride will be hurting and it will be a totally different game.hope to meet you in the final if we beat pompey of course.

koolbill i agree as a chelsea fan i know we not tht gr8 team and u guyz not tht pathetic, its just one of those days i guess where we took every chance tht came our way...chin up u guyz have a gud team with gud players like young ,milner(would love to to have them playing for us :)) I would love to see u guyz do well(except for tht one game at wembley of course :) ) gud luck to u guyz for the rest of the season

I think our chickens have come home to to roost and I have heard lots of Villa fans saying that this will be the catalyst for the end of our season....do hope not. When we were challenging for 4th last season, I got a season ticket in March which happened to start our 'fall away'.....sorry guys...I was at B6 yesterday re-newing it, so it's all my fault again.

Don't judge on one game, over reaction, panic comments, don't run the team down, etc. etc. OK I've read these comments but have to say that Villa are at a cross roads. The trend is NOT a one off. We have seen it before and we have a manager who is a motivator first and foremost, not a great coach and thinker of the game. To my mind he spends too much time trying to be Clough 2 (which is impossible) rather than a modern thinker. We have one way to play and one team of 11 players, not a squad in the true sense of the word. Motivators run out of energy and so do their teams and we are witnessing this fact again. So to the cross roads. Randy has a hard decision to make. Either he sticks with MON who is achieving the best he can with considerable funding and has hit his ceiling, or looks to change to someone who may take the club on. Either way most of us will continue to support the club - its our team. But MON and the players are the net beneficiaries of the current system they get paid. Randy mostly and the rest of us are funding them. Maybe some position between 5th and 9th is where we are always destined to finish - given the resources available in terms of ground size, average ticket price etc. Randy has probably over invested to date and probably thought he could start to cut back on annual player investments. If so then this is the best we will achieve. OK 7-1 is an aberration but in general maybe we are getting the best we can expect. Over to Randy - only he knows what further resources he wants to commit and whether he should be getting better value for what is being invested. Its a tough choice - accept that this is the best we will get - or change and hope someone else can achieve more. Who that might be, is the next possible debate.

I am sure many wont like this, but IF we had had NRC in the middle, he would canceled out Lampard, and we desperately need Bouma back at left back. For me Warnock was much worse than Luke Young!

I saw someone suggesting you buy Bent? That is a great idea for you. I think he suits your playing style 100%. He never gelled with anyone at Spurs, and he is not our type of striker.

SO SO SO much like last year. I remember all the comments about relegation form last year, and it is true this is relegation form! We always say how martin gets us where we are and people say " oh we were in the top 4 four for most the season " but its where you finish what counts! 8th is not good enough!
joe1206
villa_de, absolutely agree 100% with you mate, as i just said in a different thread, NRC is a very valuable player, and a better defensive midfielder than Petrov imho: "Guys i suspect what we REALLY needed today was Nigel Reo-Coker back in the middle... at least that guy would have ran like a machine and got at chelsea, and he would have lifted the team a little more than Petrov, who while a good player, isn't a great captain"

you guys play most games with ten men to be fair. Never understood mon's thinking behind benching carew in favour of heskey! absolutely useless. i agree with NorwaySpurs, you need a twenty goal a season striker. if you had that, your league position would be very different. bent could do that brilliantly for you. hope someone does anyway.
JoeyBlueShoes
When we played you at WHL and Villa PK i wasn't impressed with you. You're a very one dimensional team with a manager who is a great guy, but a rudimentary tactician. The OTT way he jumps up and dowm on the touchline..he's too emotionally involved. I think he absolutely has taken you as far as he can.
Tony Rocky Horror
You need two players for every position. You need different types of players who can help you play in a different type of way, because no two games will be the same. You need a plan B if plan A falls on its arse. And you need to have the courage of your convictions to make the neccesary changes if things begin to go wrong. I have to say, Harry Redknapp has schooled the other managers in and around the top four this season with his abillity to effortlessly apply these very basic principles. Gordonsleftfoot was spot on in his analysis of your present woes.

Oh no. I've jsut forced myself to sit through MoTD highlights. John Terry - a great footballer but hardly a great intellect - said something along the lines "we have watched them and they usually tire after 55-60 minutes................" How damning is that?

Children in nursery are know taught this (Villa will tire after 60 mins and in March) as the definition of the word 'obvious' they get it first time, so John Terry can also be expected to pick up on this, MON not so much

Like I said this is the only match I wanted you to lose other than that rooting for you all the way to 4th.Petrov isnt a defensive mid or sidwell, who'll throw their body everywhere.Like many said NRC wouldve helped but you also need a goalscoring mid.more aggression in all parts of the field.Someone who gets in your face. You cant have all like-able players.
Chelsea24/7
some good points chelsea 24/7, we are a bit too nice and need a bellamy snarling type player to mix it up. Also we do lack a plan b and don't rotate/sub/mix things up so sadly are again (like end of last season) predictable.

Don't say get MON out. We don't need that, and he doesn't need to hear comments of that type. We are playing much better football under him than under any other manager in my memory. He can be a stubborn, frustrating manager but have a little faith in him.
