Early Post Match Reaction - Maxim Report

Chelsea 7-1 ASTON VILLA

Worst defeat since 1964 (so I'm told, not checked myself). Villa got taught a lesson today, one that, with the money spent and time building the squad, we SHOULD NOT have had to be taught.

This was as bad a display as the score suggests and I see little profit in picking over the bones to be honest.

Villa have for the second season in a row, whimpered out of the running for 4th place, whether through tactics, fatigue or just the harsh fact that maybe we aren't as good as we'd like to think we are, I'm not sure right now would be a sane time to reflect.

Credit to Chelsea, they'd not have dreamt of this result in a month of Sunday's but took full advantage.

Star Man: Are you having a giraffe?

Worst Performer: I've suggested that the entire team and coaching staff donate this weeks wages to Acorns Charity: Click Here

Best Moment: The final whistle.

Tactics: Sorry, not today... we lost 7-1, don't care who or what is to blame, this is not acceptable

Chant of the game: Villa fans sang from start to end, they did us proud, the team didn't.

Oppo Fans: Martin, give us a wave, Martin Martin, give us a wave. :o(

Will follow up later with the managers reaction and hopefully Glensiders away match report in the morning.

Hopefully the team see this as a wake-up call. Shows how our form can disapear towards the end of the season and something desperatly needs to be done. Hopefully the players and coaching staff can do something about it in the future. So fustraiting because we are a far better team than that performance and we are repreating last seasons mistakes. Unforgivable. We MUST not lose for the rest of the season.

The worst thing is that some of us will still have been suprised by this result

This is last seasons 5-1 at Liverpool, did we learn from last seasons mistake of not rotating and running out of steam, erm, that would be a big no, will we learn, again no, not unless we change the man in charge

Fonz had a nice run past three players. Sidwell played pretty well in the first half. Ref missed Milly getting smacked in the face. Chelsea fans were very friendly before the match (maybe they knew something I didn't). Bolton on Saturday, three points please.

I heard some chants of "what a load of rubbish" but I guess that was from the Chelski fans! But nonetheless, they had a point!

agree evo, fonze will be a star one day, if only after his run he'd be able to score, that would have been SOME goal!

Tired team. Play the same men week in week out, have four centre backs to choose from, two right backs, blah blah. Sorry Martin, whose tactics are these? Am not blaming the players. But I think O'Neill's lack of rotation and same old same old substitution 'policy' is getting beyond a joke. I'm not laughing today, anyway. I want MoN to be better than this. He's going to sacrifice Villa to his bloody minded stubbornness. Please learn lessons Martin. Or ...

Goal of the season. (Another slice of humble pie for me too, he was very bright today)

My heart goes out to the Fonz the guy looks like he knows he has to score to even be considered for the next match. He deserves a few starts along with Sidwell.Warnock is rubbish,if I were English I would be praying Cole recovers for the world cup.

Shape up. They know whats happened. To be honest i was waiting for a drubbing. Now we need to get behind the club we love. Tonight mon must be sitting back and thinking what to do next, hes not stupid actualy one of the best managers in the world. Its just one game in a season. Me? Ive just been intervewed on a local french radio station. Probably the most embarsing 3 minutes of my life

Completely agree ant1ant1 - this is last seasons liverpool 5-1, shows that lessons just havent been learnt. That isnt moaning, belittling, negativity. That is a factual observation. I said before for all the good of martin o neill, (and i still beleive that), if he doesnt learn that the modern game requires a rotation system then he will never take us further.

dropping our heads at 3-1 was sad to watch, it was pretty evident that the tiredness took over...mentally fatigued....

Pking, where have you been all season how on earth can you say Warnock is rubbish, wake up the lads absolutely quality. MoN is a world class manager, why else would he be linked with Manchester United and England, and all this wineing about messing up January windows has to stop, its complete rubbish, this is not champ manager this is real life. Its not as if we are sitting back while everyone else is doing business, and frankly I would be extremely disappointed to see us splash cash like City its a ***** poor way to run a football club. Not every player we bring in is going to be a star but look at the players MoN has bought in? Milner, Young, Petrov, Dunne, Collins, Warnock, Big Brad F. I agree we have a lot of bench warmers but get real. I agree we havent learnt our lesson from last season, but I also think that we have had so many important games its been hard to not play our best players, look what happens when we introduce players like Sidwell. Bottom line is Martin is a world class manager and villa are a team with a bright future, if MoN continues signing player with the level of success he has had so far I will be a happy Villa Fan.

Whining* (Ive been doing too much wineing ;-) get it)

For us Villa fans its hard to reflect on THAT non performance and see any positives really. Warnock is quality and some of those crunching tackles shows he has heart and one of only two on the field that showed that. Fonz has to be the other who is trying his best in what little playing time he is given. IMHO a massive summer coming up for MON. The current team needs further investment and if not added to then with MON in charge we will stand still or even worse, go backwards! Brad snr is getting too old now (soz but he is) and we need someone like Hart (on loan to you know who), D Bent for goals, a n other top creative midfielder who goes forwards and isn't afraid to shoot aka Lampard (Petrov just isn't doing it for me and hasn't for a while now). Defensively we can shut out teams with a full and fit back four who play in their position so no new faces there. If we have a policy on playing at least one youngster in the team each match then this would also bring on fringe players and give us rotation like we desperately need. I love this club but if these areas aren't addressed then we will never become CL material. MON isn't for every one but I can see now why he does get some flak. Over to you MON, prove us wrong and restore our faith. The best way is with POSITIVE results for the remainder of the season! BTW, a great shout that the squad give up their weeks wages for Acorns as THAT display wasn't worthy of getting paid.

Guys i suspect what we REALLY needed today was Nigel Reo-Coker back in the middle... at least that guy would have ran like a machine and got at chelsea, and he would have lifted the team a little more than Petrov, who while a good player, isn't a great captain

mattyh1986, "look what happens when we introduce players like Sidwell." It's not the introducing him that is the problem. The issue is that he hasn't played enough and therefore isn't up to speed. You can't expect players to be excellent as soon as they come on after sitting on the bench for 6 months. If MON played and rotated 16 players then they would hit form at different times and offer different tactics etc. rather than having 11 and playing them till they can't run anymore.

It's quite interesting to read these posts. Warnock has never convinced me defensively, Big Brad is to be blunt, crap and Cuellar is easily our best RB defence-wise. Go figure. ant1, name the replacement please.
