'If It's Football, It's Vital'

An Interview With A Sunderland Fan

Interview with Gaz Johnson of Vital Sunderland

1) So how is the season so far, started so well, why the drop off?

If you asked me this 7 days ago I would have been one miserable Mackem! However, due to your good FA Cup run this allowed us to have four home games in a row and we have been good at home this season. The season has been a massive learning curve for not only all the fans but the new players and gaffer. Bruce is turning things around slowly and with the latest few results we are now seeing his own team get the points we need to stay in mid table.

2) Is Steve Bruce the right manager for you and how do the fans view him?

Yes, he has only been our manager since the Summer and some fans do expect miracles overnight but we need to aim to build the club exactly the same way as Villa have done under O'neill. Bruce has had a bad half of the season due to massive injury problems and suspensions at the wrong times but he is now getting his full squad back and we look like we did in the early stages of the season.

3) Slight worries of being dragged into the relegation battle, the draw v Man City (bad luck by the way, although that equalising goal was special, you must all have been gutted) must have put that to bed? How does your run in look?

We were all very worried pre Bolton game a week ago but after the 4-0 drubbing of the Trotter's and then a very hard earned point against City we seem to have turned a corner. We head into the Villa game after the Birmingham game and hopefully we can get another three points to finally say we are safe. Our run in has some important games against Burnley at home and Hull and Wolves away, we also have some difficult games against Liverpool and Man Utd. As long as we maintain our fantastic home record we will be alright and then look forward to the Summer.

4) Who do you think will win the title?

This is the most exciting season I have ever witnessed and I did predict Chelsea to win this when they beat us in the opening home game this season, however you can never write off Rooney and Man Utd. I will stick with my gut feeling and say Chelsea by goal difference!

5) And more pertinent to Villa, who do you think will finish 4th (and who would you LIKE to finish 4th?)

I do not really care who finishes 4th but I would like to see Villa finish their as they have been so close in the past seasons and they have a manger who has got the team their through effort rather than waving the cheque book.

6) Who in your team should Villa be wary of?

Darren Bent is the obvious one as he can score a goal out of fresh air but the main man at Sunderland at the moment is John Mensah from Ghana. He has been the reason we have turned a corner, he has made us solid, reliable and hard to beat at the back and his presence has made our clean sheet record increase. We have lost 3 games he has started.

7) Who are you wary of in our team?

Ex-geordie James Milner always seems to fire in the goals past us so it would be naive not to mention this acne faced winger.

8) If you could have one of our players who would it be and why?

Ashley Young, we are dying for a creative winger who can deliver a good cross and corner but also has an eye for goal to help out poor old Darren Bent who has scored half of our league goals this season!

9) Any opinions on Villa and Martin O'Neill?

They are the team Steve Bruce wants to make Sunderland into, he has always quoted himself saying we need to use Villa as a 'blue-print to success' and I agree fully. Manager O'Neill has been given time and look at the success the club is now earning. If we can give Bruce the same patience we could break the top ten and then think of silverware.

9) Go on then, lets have your prediction kind sir!

Although we have hit some form, we have also lost Kenwyne Jones and this injury is massive to our hopes of any points at Villa Park this week. I will have to be honest and say we will lose 2-0 but we have been known to go against the form book in other games so please let this be the case.

Another taken in by Villa "success" on a shoestring , we've spent 120m to get 7th after 4 seasons ! I bet the top4 are well happy if every club uses Villa as a blueprint !

Wooooooo hooooooooooo! 120m : ) Wow! You can almost buy four decent strikers for that amount, or if you're Man*****ty two players, yep that's a massive amount of money when you're talking about the premiership.

Villain57 talk about negativity haha, the sunderland fan has put everything there spot on, if you see the amount spurs and city have spent compared to us i guarantee it will be a hell of a lot. Liverpool havnt spent that much in the last 2-3 years due to their financial state but they can attract the best players like torres etc and we cant at the moment so villain57 stop bein a glory and have patience with oneil as he has done a great job in his years with villa and made us challengers for silverware again but its not pleasing most because they want instant success. Fair interview btw for by the sunderland fan, although i dont see the game being 2-0 i predict about 1-1 or 1-0 villa.

Would it not be 6th after 3 seasons? ;-) An inspired Jimmy Milner performance will help us to a 3-1 win.

I know every game is important but this feels like a massive game after the results at the weekend. COME ON THE VILLA!!! I never make predictions (because when I do they are usually way off) but having studied Sunderland's away form I'm gonna go with 3-1 to the good guys. SAFC have lost 10 out of 14 and conceded 30 goals on their travels. Let's go with Cuellar, Young & Carew as scorers (in that order). ;)

villan57 what about what MON has brought back in sales?? it works out that MON has spent about 22 million per season. Not alot really. I've said this a few times lately WE the fans are our own worst enemy, now we're seeing abit of success the expectation levels have risen to an unreasonable height. things are good, why cant why enjoy it????

I agree claretandbluearmy spot on. Since o'neil took over we had that good season where we wanted to finish 5th!! not 4th!! but everton beat us to it and now we are going for champions league and we are progressing clearly. we have some tough teams in the likes of spurs and city so every season will be difficult. Fans want us to progress far too quick, we had a good season last year until that 2nd half and this season is the same and we havnt really fell behind we are still up there and improved on last year so the stats shows next year we will improve again and maybe get 4th. fans must be patient in the race for glory.

It seems that this tired old debate about MoN, his tactics and his rotation throws up its ugly head whatever the subject of the original post. "An Interview with a Sunderland Fan" becomes; "Is MoN the Right Manager for Villa?". So, part from the improved league position, the League Cup run to the Final, the FA Cup run to the Semi-Final, winning a prestigious pre-season tournament, beating ManU at Old Trafford, more exciting play, better squad, improved gates, higher profile, more televised games; what has MoN done for us? (Apologies to Monty Python).

Seems a very intelligent young Mackem, happy with his lot, and fully appreciative that you cant just build a team/club in ten minutes. They outplayed us in the Carling Cup tie at their place, and were very unfortunate not to progress that night, yet in the premier league encounter, just a few short weeks after, we turned the tables completely and looked head and shoulders above them. A funny side in that they are well capable of getting a result against the odds. We're in for another tough ninety minutes plus.

"Very intelligent young Mackem" - glad to have those compliments, just need your team to allow us to win and I will be even happier lol

Won't be an easy game. Who's gonna start up front - reckon the Fonz will get a go with Gabby looking like he's still crocked ?

57 120 mil is nothing in the prem over 3 - 4 years. What he hasn't done is break the wage structure. Look at Manure and Man city and liverpool, chelsea. All paying millions a month in wages. Not at Villa Park thank you! But we are still vying for 4th, FA cup semis and League cup finalists!!
