Richard Not Dunne And Dusted For Sunderland

Yay pathetic pun time again! Richard Dunne is struggling with the Achilles problem he picked up against Wolves and is considered a serious doubt for the Sunderland clash.

Quoted on SSN O'Neill admitted that Dunne had been struggling with the problem and that 'he did well to come out for the second half' against Wolves, before blaming the gruelling schedule for taking it's toll on players.

'He was very sore at halftime but we'll monitor it and see how it goes. Is it the number of games catching up, it is a combination of those things.'

Bottomline is I'd be very surprised if Dunne didn't play against Sunderland, we seem to have a lot of these late fitness test stories that actually equal no change to the first team. The ones that cause changes to be made we hear very little about ie Gabby's one problem to another absence of late.

I for one wouldn't be too unhappy if he missed the game, just for the simple reason that we (SHOULD) see Carlos move in to his best position in the centre and finally see Luke Young get a game!

Yeah i agree Curtis needs games or else we could end up losing him - and a lot of money - didnt he cost in the region of 10M ? Does anyone know how long he has left on his contact ? ..................... As for the Spurs fans comments that have since been deleted .... let em qualify for CL next season - throw loads of money at it like Leeds did - with hopefully the same long term fate.... I think really that the real only team other than the current big 4 who will maintain a CL place is Man City ... only cus of the money situation .... sadly Villa .... and thankfully Spurs are not in this position .... and to be honest if Chelsea had there money taken away there place would be threatened ..... the only place i see maintaining are Man United and Liverpool .... because of there history in the competition and huge world wide support .... shame about Arsenal - they are always the nearly there boys ...... bit like Villa really

Agree totally splatt. It will be really interesting to see what MoN does. Maybe we'll see something that will give us a clue as to what the hell is happening with Luke Young.

Moving Cuellar into central defence, thus still being able to ensure the spaniard keeps a starting place in the team, is the one and only way that Luke Young can envisage getting back into the side. I'm curious to understand what makes Cuellar, in the eyes of many, turn from a woeful right full back, into a dominating and top quality central defender? I just cant see it myself. He remains slow and cumbersome, his distribution out of defence remains abysmal, he still cannot tackle cleanly, and he's not that particularly a good header of a football. He's turned way too easily, allows his attacker way too much space, and remains very much something of a liability. Young Cieran Clark remains a much better central defender, a player who will no doubt be up and off soon if he doesn't start enjoying some first team football.

I'm a big fan of Carlos as Centre back .. I think he looks solid and works well with his other C.B but not everybody is going to agree with everybody about everything (except Heskey maybe)

splatt - you're spot on. Or maybe Curtis will get a start IF he's match fit! Luke back to RB. Not worried about our defensive set up at all... then again was Carlos performance on saturday due to tiredness? Seems everyone sees something different in every player no metter how long you've been watching the Villa. I think Carlos, with few exeptions, has been one of our outstanding players this season...and we've quite a few who, whatever happens, deserve a pat on the back. Let's just hope they can turn performances into trophies!

Dunney has earned a rest, I hope luke gets a game we need 3 points weds. tvrwhitey I agree about spuds they wont get CL theyre just a bunch of dreamers. Citeh are the only ones who could sustain it. I think liverpoo are doomed to financial meltdown.

There is no mystery about why someone can plasy well in central defence but poorly at RB. Different experience altogether for the defender. In the centre you see all of the play in front of you, you have acres to play with and slightly misplaced balls forward remain in play. Not the case for the RB who has a much harder job in my view.

I'd be playing Luke Young against the weaker teams like wolves (no offence to them) where he adds more going forward, and carlos against the stronger teams to tighten up defensively. Glensider - have to disagree on the tackling mate... i believe Carlos is one of the best tacklers on his day

Thanks for your responses re Cuellar chaps. I remain totally unconvinced about the player, but I hope he starts to do the business and prove me wrong.

I think martin playing Cuellar at right back will probably affect his chances of playing for Spain at the World Cup .
Doug4ever
If MON plays Luke at RB for rest of season it would cure a lot of insanity at VP,looks like his hand may be forced which is unfortunate as Dunne our best CB.

First let me say i love MON but the man defies logic!!! If you have players injured when adequate replacements are available sub them! jesus, cuellar at centre back and luke at right back for a few matches isnt going to kill us! How LY etc must feel about these sort of comments is beyond me.

Not sure how this article got turned into a "who can afford to be in the CL/which clubs will go into financial meltdown" article but as it has I think this is worth pointing out > > http://www.chelsea.vitalfootball.co.uk/article.asp?a=518203 Back to the point. I too am a big fan of MON but these comments about tiredness really are frustrating when, as goodb_2 says, we have adequate replacements. This lack of any real rotation until forced by injury is bizarre to say the least. We cry out for two seasons for a bigger squad and when we finally get one we fail to use it. The big worry is that many of our squad players who, at the start of the season, were told that they would get games, have subsequently not been given time on the pitch and therefore will all want to leave come May whereby we will be back to square one. I know I'm not alone when I say I want to see more of Luke Young, Delph, & The Fonz. Come on MON. Don't be stubborn. Make use of what you've got - an exciting, young, talented squad.

I think the debate about players playing out of the position that are known for, is interesting. We won the League and European Cup with a right winger at right back (Swain), a centre forward at centre half (Evans), a goal keeper who wouldn't come off his line (Rimmer) a centre half who was originally slated by the fans (Ken McNaught), a journey man centre forward who had no real proof of being a great goalscorer (Peter Withe) and a central midfielder who couldn't hit a barn door at 5 paces (Bremner). But they were a team. Not the best individually, but a team. And last time I looked football was a team game. I too think that Cuellar and Dunne are the best central partnership. I can not understand having two right backs on the bench and a centre half at right back. I also think it is madness to play Heskey and Carew together instead of pairing Dephonesou with Carew. I do not like the 4 4 2 formation. I would much rather have a 3 man midfield and then give Young or Downing (not both) the license to go where they want. But if at the start of the season you had told me that Villa were playing Guzan at centre forward and Agbonlahor in goal, but we would reach Wembley at least twice (maybe 3 times) and were in with a great chance of 4th with 9 games to go, then I would have ripped your hand off for that. So little rant over. I do not think we would miss Dunne for a game (or several games) and that is why we have a squad. For those who have booed because they think they know best as to what team should be played, should be ashamed. We have the best defence in the league and fans are complaining because they are not happy becuase they think the right back is not as good as a player on the bench. Some Villa fans should be thoroughly ashamed of their actions. That said, it would help if M'ON communicated to the fans exactly why Cuellar is preffered to the two right backs which cost a combined total of 7million. If he also let fans know why he plays two centre forwards when Heskeys goals per minute is about about 1 quarter of Delfonesous it would help. If these two questions were answered that would hopefully placate the morons who think booing is the way to make the team play better.
