'If It's Football, It's Vital'

Carew Tricks And Ashley Young 'Nightmare'

Well, John Carew says he used some fancy trickery in his two 'borderline' (read, offside...!) goals against Wolves at the weekend.

He told Matt at the Birmingham Mail:

'That's the trick! It just comes with experience.'

Adding, 'We are always playing on the limit and that makes a difference between not scoring a goal and scoring a goal. It is just part of being a striker. You have to be hungry enough to get into the positions and try and outsmart the defender’s movements.'

carew

He was certainly hungry, he has played in the last couple of games how he should play every game, his performance in the second half against Reading was outstanding and just illustrates what a player he could and should be for us and IS on his day. If he could only find that magic ingredient of consistency, he'd be scoring as many as Darren Bent up at Sunderland and would be up there with the Didier Drogba's of the world in the ratings of strikers.

I'm not sure he likes the cold to be honest, he goes off the boil heading to Christmas, gets injured over the New Year then comes back strong as we head to the spring! lol

On the official site Big John added: 'We are a bit disappointed but as we said after the game it could be a very important point in the end. In a few weeks we could be saying that point was a very important one and we still didn't lose the game. We were hoping and expecting we would take three points.' I think Carew has earnt the right to start when Agbonlahor returns from injury... i can see Heskey finally being sent to the 'no goals chair' on the bench!

History tells us that Martin is quite capable of benching Carew and playing Heskey .
Doug4ever
History tells us that MoN is quite capable of bringing Gabby back in at left back because he's fallen out with Warnock. Then he can start with Heskey and Carew, bringing Sidders on at 70 minutes. Gabby at left back - you read it here first. Where is there to go after Milner/Albrighton at right back?

144wittonlane i seriously dont know what more MOn can do, were losing a game so he brings on albrighton, who was played as a wingback to add some extra creativity going forward and he gets some idiot like you throwing out sarcastic comments. If he'd brought on a fullback people wouldve called him negative.

actually, i think MON is confident enough with collins and dunne manning the defence without the fullbacks. i mean, did u see collins play against wolves?? what a goddamn wall. the 2 goals we concede were unlucky..
Gruck
pauled177, sarcastic I may be, and idiot, I don't think so. Is it sarcastic to ask when he'll play a right back at right back then? No. It's a question that only sounds sarcastic because of MoN's team sheets and substitutions.

And, yes Gruck. Agree. That's what happens when payers are played in position. He is making Cuellar look like a fool on the right. But in the centre, Cuellar has been a rock.

why does a player have to have the label "right back" to play in that position? Cuellar has formed part of the best defence in the league this season by playing on the right hand side, who's to say that with Luke Young there we would have conceded less, if we had been shipping in goals then i would agree that needs to be looked at but why change the best defence in the league so a player can fill a label

I will never understand why Heskey is a Premiership footballer or plays for England. As a Villa fan it hurts me to be so critical of such a player. But really - apart from his strengths, and objective nature in defending/passing - he doesn't add a great deal to our game!

Of course on a technical level you're right pauled177, but are you seriously saying that Cuellar looks comfortable at RB? It's a position not a label. He is slow going back and looks out of his depth going forward. He gives the ball away in dangerous positions. He does not do this when playing in the centre. He looks solid, makes better tackles, reads the game better and has more options for distribution that when on the right. Luke Young is a specialist in that wide position at the back (if you object to labels). And yes, I do think that we would have had better results had LY been playing, but we'll never know. The best defence in the league will not win games. It will draw lots though, and that's what we've done. An attacking RB would help win games and rotated centre backs might be fresher as the fixtures pile up.

144wittonlane, i dont think you can blame cuellar at right back for us not scoring enough goals and winning matches, we have players in front of the back 4 who should be able to create enough chances to win us games. The heskey fact i totally agree with, Carew should start, but in a lot of games this season carew has performed no better than heskey barring the last month or two and im Carews biggest fan. I also think hes not opting for Delfouenso as the pressure of games at the moment could be too much for a young inexperienced player but i would love to see the kid given a go as his cup exploits have shown that he ha a lot to offer

I'm not blaming Cuellar. He's just doing the best he can as he's told to play there. I'm blaming MoN. It's OK to say thing could improve. Would a more attacking RB have NOT added more accurate crosses and freed up Ash or Downing to cut in? Cuellar does neither, he's a liability past the half way line. And it's not his fault. He's a great centre back.

Sorry pauled177 but i think its only you and Martin that is happy enough not playing Luke Young .. I agree with 144wittonlane , Carlos is a great C.H but is played out of position . Its not about labels but playing people in the positions where they play best . Right back is a specialist position .. You wouldn't put Friedel there would you .

Could it be that we have the best defence in the premier league because Carlos is at right back? It's swings and roundabouts. Would luke young create more goals than we may have conceded without Carlos? MON doesn't seem to think so. I have to say that I trust his judgement more than the naysayers on Vital Villa. Not many criticise the likes of hodgson or Moyes but I bet they'd kill to have the season we are having. So get behind the team and reserve you ridiculously over the top reactionary opinions to the pub and not where you can bring ridicule to this club. So there!

3 people who are happy enough not playing Luke Young .

Maybe we should have a poll (Mr Fear).. who do we want at right back .. there may be more people than i thought .

Black = White? Other poll suggestions ... Boring = exciting? Lucky = brilliant? Heskey = striker?

You're missing the point of my argument, in theory, i would rather have young at right back, but until we start shipping goals and dont look solid why change
