Robbie Keane Coming To Villa At Last?

Robbie Keane coming to Villa at last?

Well according to James Nursey at The Mirror he is.

The 29-year-old Spurs striker, currently on loan at Celtic, is a major target for Martin O'Neill this summer according to the report. Not the first time we've heard this but hopefully this time it comes true, I think he'd be an outstanding acquisition and would certainly get the juices flowing up front, something we are a little short of at the moment. Imagine Keano in the side this year? We'd have converted more of our draws into wins and would be sitting very pretty higher up the league.

Apparently Appy Arry wants to keep Roman Pavlyuchenko and with Jermain Defoe and Peter Crouch also in their set up, will need to off-load one striker and his choice is Robbie who so nearly joined us from Wolves all those years ago.

Myth buster: As much as I'd like to blame Doug Ellis for everything from the fall of the Roman empire onwards, this time the legend that he wouldn't buy Robbie having decided he was worth 500k less than the asking price was wrong. John Gregory went to watch him several times and admitted he decided he couldn't take the risk because he didn't play that well each time he viewed him. He also pointed out that 19 other Premiership managers also missed the gem at the time as he went to Internazionale (commonly referred to as Inter Milan) instead!

Keano has 8 goals in 8 games for Celtic but they can't afford the 9million asking price.

Come on Villa, bring Keano here!

A striker who scores goals? Surely that's cheating!

29, proven goalscorer, great quality, also great link up play and sets up a lot of goals so Gabby could feed off him also.

I would have liked him the first time we were linked but i think he's not as good anymore .. Heskey could score 8 goals in 8 games for Celtic

I don't think he is really an MON signing. Too old, too slow and not English. For me he has looked well past his best this season. Anyone can score goals in Scotland and if he's not good enough for Tottenham he certainly isn't good enough for us.

No no and thrice no. Overpaid, over rated and over aged. At his age he has absolutely no resale value whatsover. Redknapp must be rubbing his hands in glee like the old car dealer that he is, if he thinks he is getting 9 million for a player in the last couple of years of his real shelf life. Lets just do the maths and also realise that getting Keane guarantees nothing. Look at the chances Spuds have created and they still haven't done as well as us this season. If he ain't good enough for Spuds, he ain't good enough for us. 9million + a couple of million in signing on fees, agents commission etc would mean he would initially cost about 11 million. His wages on a four year contract would conservatively be around 3 million a year. He would cost the Villa towards 25 million and his resale value would be er . . . . . . . . . nothing. If the club can afford that in these days of financial prudence then great, if 25 million is percieved as good value for a squad player at best. However I believe the true skill of a manager is finding young talent (even if you have to pay over the odds for it) that will secure the clubs future, not potentially bankrupt it. Downing, Young, Milner, Delph have cost under 40 million. They would now fetch in excess 60 million and with the new law coming in to force on home grown players in the forseeable future, they are potentially worth considerably more. Mon's challenge is finding a young 'Robbie Keane, Wayne Rooney' etc. Not buying someone on his last legs with no future value to the club. I have heard mention of Rodellaga for 15m. No thank you. But buying him for the couple of million he cost and then selling for 15 million is where the clever money is.

He would've been great for us years ago, but Villa have moved on massively in the last four years we need to aim higher than Keane, I agree wirh Mr Norman if he can't get in Spuds team he wont get in ours. Get rid of Heskey and buy D Bent and Rodellaga (thats in the papers today, good shout)

Am sure he went to Coventry before Inter... I like the idea of Keane.

I cant see spurs selling keane to villa TBH, as much as his time with us is up I cannot see him moving to a direct rival, I reckon that if he doesn't stay at parkhead then Sunderland would be the the more realistic move.

Robbie Keane is the type of player we need. A forward who is comfortable 'coming short' for the ball, linking up play, able to deliver the final clever pass, and a goalscorer. Much like Terry Sheringham used to do. HOWEVER, I am not sure that Keane is the player he was, and that he can still 'cut it' at the top level. 4m would be a worthwhile gamble (with no real sell on value), but 9m---no way! I quite like Tuncay at Stoke, who plays a similar role, but is he good enough for where we want to be? Difficult, but I think that is the TYPE of player we need.

All the 'if hes not good enough for spurs, he ain't good enough for us' is silly...he might fit better into our squad than heres...Ibet Barcas fans said if Pique aint good enough for Uniteds back 4 he aint good enough for theres? Maybe he was younger, I don't know but im sure players will of moved to better teams, or team at the same level, after being on the bench for the previous and proving a success

Well said avdom - many a 'poor' player for one team has proved to be a success with another. Let's be realistic, if we limited ourselves to buying 'top' players from 'top' clubs, we would have none ...
BobTheBuilder
That is a well made point avdom. But it doesn't apply to Keane. He is a 'has been'. He would cost any club 25million in transfer fee and wages over the term of his contract and that is why we do not need him. We need young, hungry with quality. I am hoping that Delfonesou will be our 'Rooney'. But if M'On can not find better value for 25 million the questions should be asked of him.

Hmm, very split feelings on this one. Maybe worth a 5m gamble, as in his day he was certainly a very good player. Question remains is he now past it? I feel this squad needs only maybe 2 more QUALITY additions. But that's the point... QUALITY! I'd rather MON only bought 1 quality player in than another 3 squad members... our squad is now fairly settled. Am I alone in thinking another winger would be nice, or are we ok with downing, young and albrighton? (and milner if necessary)

Cant help agreeing with VOTH. Sound too expensive, too risky, too old, too loud and disruptive in the dressing room, too slow........ and far TOO late! We should be looking for a player like an Ashley or Milly, just as a clinical striker!

Nooo i wouldnt like robbie keane, a few years back he would have been good with gabby but now i doubt he would be and yh i agree with the comment above heskey would probably score 8 in 8 at celtic the leagues that poor. i would like someone like bent but sunderland wont sell him after one season with the form he is in, rodallega i wouldnt really want, maybe bring a foreign striker in who can be a real goal machine.

I'd guess our transfer dealings this summer will depend on if we finish 4th or not. I can't imagine MON has targets at this early stage, not knowing the calibre of players he will be able to pick up after the World Cup. I'm hoping beyond hope that David Villa would find it quite kinky playing for a team that's his namesake! Improbable, you say? Too right... but Champions League qualification would open up a different class of player to us. I suppose that would then beg the question whether MON would take advantage of it and sign some Euro, African or South American quality in the summer.

I think Rodellaga is a better shout, he is 24, has scored against Chelsea, Liverpool and us this season, has 8 goals in 22 games for Columbia and even went in goal for Columbia once, so MON will love him as he is young, scored in EPL and can play him in goal instead of up front for a few games

Trouble is If Villa get 4th, no big name transfers will happen 'til after the world cup has finished as players will want to 'show themselves' thus inflating the price. And as we know MON won't want that!

Would prefer D Bent or Rodellaga. The world cup could put a big price on our boys heads if they go too! Is Milly's contract upto date?

MoN and Villa's scouts need to look abroad for strikers this summer. Unless we qualify for the CL, in which case all bets are off and it's possible we might attract one or two star players away from one of our close rivals. Very much an "if" though..
ExpatVillaShirt
At a push he may be worth a gamble as a squad player if he was available on a free and a pay as you play basis. He is not worth a penny of good money. Every penny spent on him is lost to the club for good and it is the signing of players that have no resale value that has contributed to the financial problems of so many clubs.
voiceoftheholte
Not keen on this rumour at all. We dont want Keane here at this late stage in his career. If we take into account the fee that Tottenham would want for him, allied to his no doubt sky-high salary demands, I cant see that the signing would make any sense at all. He's moved around a lot in his career without truly finding a place to call home, and that also raises concerns, and with the guy now at almost thirty years of age, the possible signing just doesn't look like a viable option. Yes we need a goalscorer, a guy proven at the premiership level, but sorry, I dont believe that Robbie Keane is that guy.

Right back? Don't be daft AV-Damo!! We've got a perfectly slow getting back and often confused going forward centre-back playing there. I think he's got the physique for central defence myself ... ready for when Monny falls out with Dunne! 9Million - done deal. PMSL!!

Yes mate, he hasnt looked like a top player for around 2 years now. He looks to have lost a yard of pace a la Michael Owen, the screamers and cute finishes have stopped, all thats left is a slightly podgy bloke who needs 10 chances to score 1 and who just points and shouts at everyone (hence the name PSB Pointy-Shouty Bloke). He should stay in Scotland at his "other" boyhood team where he will do well. You would be mad to go near him IMO although i would still have him over Big Emile.

I'm still hoping for Kenwyne Jones or Darren Bent - feel Jones will grow into a much better player with us, whereas Bent may forever be crippled by his time at Spurs...woefully underused there and may never be able to step up to the plate a a club our size......I like Jones though. He is strong, great heading, fast and once he stops somersaulting I believe he may stay injury free. Kean would hav

Kenwyne Jones. Oh my good lord. We are scrapping the barrel now. Surely we want to move forward as a club? There are 40,000 Mackems who would happily pay his taxi fare to Brum.
