Extraordinary Milner - The Verdict

The Wigan match verdict from O'Neill is pretty much all about James Milner today. Not surprising really after his performance last night.

Speaking on the Official Site following our well earnt 3 points in the 2-1 win, O'Neill positively waxes lyrical about Milner.

He uses words like 'extraordinary' to describe his performance and commitment last night and states that he thinks Milly's all round game has gone up '10 fold' since moving into the middle of the park. His goal last night also took him into double figures for the season so it look like we have definitely solved the 'we need a regular goalscorer from midfield' problem that we've suffered from for a few years.

'It was an extraordinary performance by a really, really good player.'

O'Neill was also obvious 'well pleased' with picking up another 3 points and ending our March hoodoo.

'It was important for us to close the gap and we did that tonight.'

O'Neill sort of indicates that the aim from the 3 games we have in hand was realistically 6 odd points, in saying:

'If you'd have said to me last Friday night that we'd come out of the games against Stoke and Wigan with four points, I'd have been delighted.'

Stoke remains disappointing because of the match as opposed to the result really. If 6-7 points was our aim we are well on track for that and have already closed the gap nicely, and of course by the time we've played our 3rd game in hand and have got the 29th fixture this season out the way like most of the league already, we'll still have a game in hand on Liverpool and probably Spurs aswell.

So 6 points from them two would see us leapfrog everyone to 4th place with only Man City to worry about as they've got the same games in hand as us.

Onwards and upwards!

I think I love Milner. Not in a gay way, just look up to him with admiration and respect, bit like an older brother. (Even though technically he is younger than me).

how exactly can you leapfrog everyone in to fourth place? after your 29th fixture? surely only 5th is acheivable unless you beat wolves 9-0?

Milner' performance against Wigan was one of the best individual displays I have seen from a Villa player in 48 years watching the club. On par with Brian Little when he scored a hat trick at Highbury against QPR in the League Cup semi final in 1977.

Extraordinary doesn't even begin to describe his efforts last night. He was the very heartbeat of the performance, involved in everything from first kick to last, running the show. And to recall that when he signed on the dotted he was described by some as awaste of money, a one trick pony, and MON was advised that we should have bought Wright-Phillips instead, or Bentley, or whoever else was the right-wing flavour of the day. South Africa beckons, where he will do his country proud, just as he has his club throughout the current campaign. Take a bow Milly.

Dear daveeeeed ginola, Spurs are not going to get a point in April. Of the top 7 teams, Spurs are bottom of the league when playing the top 7 clubs. In April you play all 3 of the top 3. And you will blow it against sunderland. Have a happy easter. LoL Even Birmingham might leapfrog Spurs.

Rif how we perform in april has nothing to do with what i said, I questioned how you would be above us after your 29th fixture as claimed in the article? it would require a 9 goal swing in your favour this saturday and lets be honest out of the top 7 you have scored the least goals so its unlikely. As for your predictions of how April will pan out well you might be right but i bet you also predicted you'd win the carling cup and we all know how that turned out!
daveeeeed ginola
Ginola, the article claims no such thing. Read it again

So it's 6 points from our 3rd in hand (Wolves which will take us to 29) and then the subsequent (4th) game in hand we already have over Liverpool and you'll have played fixture 30 by then aswell. Purely points based, not goals. ie we'd then have 55 points and yes I am assuming you'll at best get a point from Stokie.
