'If It's Football, It's Vital'

An Interview With A Wigan Fan

Our interview with Worbo from Vital Wigan:

1) So how is the season so far, not quite as expected I would imagine and where had you expected to be by now?

I thought we might find it tough this season, big changes to the team in key personnel leaving, new manager and backroom staff that had to get used to the Premier League, the style of play is different and we have a very young team in terms of age.

Before the season started I thought that we would finish 14th so seeing we are in 15th at the moment I’m not too worried, looks like 37 points will be enough to keep you up so another 9 from the remaining 9 games and we will be fine, happy days really.

2) Is Martinez the right man for the job long term?

Absolutely, he has a vision of where he wants to take the club and what is necessary for that to happen, he states that it’s important to bring in young players who have their best years ahead of them to build the club on rather than old timers at the end of their careers like we have had in the past.

Three Martinez recruits McCarthy, Moses and Diame look to be fantastic prospects, all young, talented and with something to prove.

Martinez is also very passionate and positive about Wigan Athletic, he always looks for good in situations and it is refreshing to have a manager that you believe genuinely wants to be here

3) Bad loss this weekend, have Wigan got it in them to bounce back or do you fear the arrival of Villa?

Shocking loss, the second half we just accepted what was happening without a fight, we let Bolton bully us all over the pitch and we made basic errors for their goals, it looked like the team were nervous or drained after the performance over Liverpool last Monday, I hope it were neither and just a bad day at the office, we’ve had a few of those this season.

I’m looking forward to Villa coming, you play the type of football that allows us to play as well, when given time and space we can knock it about with the best of them and I am hopeful that we will see the lads bounce back with a good performance.

4) Who do you think will win the title?

Well so long as Rooney keeps firing in the goals can you see beyond Man United? Its all very tight, Chelsea are a solid unit and just keeping rolling forward but I have a sneaky feeling that Arsenal will surprise everyone, they have the best run-in fixture wise and the pressure is off them, they have shown that they can overcome injuries to key players and they have match winners throughout their team

5) And more pertinent to Villa, who do you think will finish 4th (and who would you LIKE to finish 4th?)

I predicted Villa to come 4th at the start of the season and I’m sticking to that, of the four challengers for that spot I’d say its between Man City and Villa in my opinion and out of the two I’d like to see Villa clinch it for no other reason than it’s a side that has been carefully blended rather than one that’s been expensively assembled, maybe I’m a bit jealous of the City cash but the way they have thrown money around I find a bit crass.

6) Who in your team should Villa be wary of?

Charles N’Zogbia, fast, skilful, creative and can score goals, Charlie has been on top of his game all season and there has been talk of him making the England squad (he qualifies through residency rules). Most opposing teams double up on him, you have been warned.

7) Who are you wary of in our team?

James Milner is looking better every time I see him play and Stewart Downing looks to have settled in very well and I know he can be a danger but as always it is the returning former star who usually bites you on the bum, Emile Heskey was an absolute legend at the Latics and he is for me the big dangerman for Tuesday nights game

8) If you could have one of our players who would it be and why?

James Milner, he is versatile, but not only can he play in various positions he plays well there, he is young, though he does seem to have been around for a long time and he always gives 100%, he makes a great club man and he must be a good role model for the youth players, yep we’ll take Milner please.

9) Go on then, lets have your prediction kind sir!

Tempted to say we’ll win but in all honesty I’d take a draw now if it was offered so that’s what I’ll go for 1-1

Fear, I agree and was thinking the same thing before I saw your comment. No win here and I think 4th starts to look a bit remote.

Much more of a must win for the Latics, we desperately need the points and a first double of the season would do nicely

Why is it a "must win"? We aren't that far behind, are we?

A four point haul from the games against Stoke City and Wigan Athletic, wont be a bad return in my opinion, so yes, I'm with you guys who suggest that it falls into the category of a 'must win' game. Wigan will undoubtably be up for the battle, as they are involved in a fight for their premiership lives, and they are well capable of turning us over again unless we are at the top of our game. We ought to win, we should win, but the nagging question remains, from where are the goals going to come from? Looking forward to the game, hope we reverse the result from opening day, and then we can face our next two home games knowing that we are well and truly in the mix for that much desired, top four finish.

31 goals in 15 games in 2010 isn't that bad - the scouse have only managed 17 goals in their last 17 league games!!!!
