Agbonlahor Nervous Of World Cup Squad Selection

Aston Villa forward Gabby Agbonlahor has told Sky Sports it will be a nervous wait to see who is selected for England for this summer's World Cup.

If fit (and pray God let him be fit!) Wayne Rooney will go obviously, the other places are up for grabs but it does seem Emile Heskey will also be taken (for some reason I can't figure?) Peter Crouch did a lot to book his place with a brace v Egypt in the England friendly but then who else?

Jermain Defoe, Carlton Cole, Gabby Agbonlahor and probably the biggest long shot, Bobby Zamora have all been used or linked.

What do you think, will he make it or fall just short?

Not a chance.

Not a chance.

I'll second that!

Can't see him going, not been given a chance really but credit where its due to Crouch, keeps taking his chances ~ although always against lesser ability teams, but still have a fantastic record!

sorry i just don't see the advantage of taking Heskey - all this 'hold the ball up well, is a good team player' rubbish irritates me, he's a striker that doesn't score goals and thats poor, end of!

I was trying to second murph, but krisvilla got in there first. I don't see Agbonlahor having a big future at international level. He isn't at that level, and is unlikely to be in the future. He'd be brutally exposed if villa got into the CL. He bleeds claret and blue though. I'm sure most Villans would like to see him stay at the club for the rest of his career (along with Ashley Young and James Milner). Maybe, MON should try him as a winger next season? Or is that wishful thinking?
VillaWillRiseAgain
agree krisvilla, if he keeps on developing I can see him making the next world cup and even sooner, the Euro's
The Fear
don't think he'll go. 4th choice striker at the WC will only be used as an 'impact sub', and as much as i like Gabby, i think he's the least likely of those strikers listed to be able to change the course of a game. You'd either want a poacher like Defoe or a tall guy like Cole. Then again, with his pace he'd be handy to bring on if we're winning the game already....

I think Gabby is improvinf all the time. IMO he is a very good Premiership player but NOT international class. I think Milner and Heskey will go to South Africa, and Stewart Downing has an outside chance if he can regain the form of a couple of months ago. I can't see Stephen Warnock making it, nor Ashley Young, who is IMO the best suited of all (after Milner) to the International game. I believe if Ashley had a run of games starting for England on the right he would prove better than Walcott, Lennon or Wright-Phillips. As well as pace he has trickery and a great, if sometimes inconsistent, delivery.

The bottom line for me is his ability to run really fast for 90 minutes won’t be worth a squirt with the pitch temperature equivalent to the average temperature of the sun. For me he doe’s not even offer the “Impact Factor” off the bench.

He should go. He is a different option to anyone else in the team and is good enough. If Defoe makes it and Gabby doesn't then it will be a travesty.

Completely agreed krfeskivilla! Agbonlahor is developing into a fine EPL player, but isn't international class. Liverpool have Torres, Citeh have Tevez, Chelskov have Drogba, SAF has Rooney. Agbonlahor simply isn't at that level. Andy (Andrew?) Cole (and others) has shown that you can do a job in the EPL, even if you aren't international class. Agbonlahor can take heart from that. He isn't a bad player, I just can't see him outplaying the worlds best defenders. To be honest, Rooney aside, none of England's main strikers are genuingly 'world class'. Crouch is a fine player, but has got most of his international goals against relatively weak opposition. Milner and A.Young are potentially world class players for Villa and England. Villa will NOT make progress in the ECL (assuming they qualify) with their current forward line.

col - you do realise that the competition is being played in the SA winter? Conditions should be much more comparable with a Northern European climate.

as a Villa fan I want him to go but as a England fan I don't.........so I quess that clears that up?

Milner and Ashley Young are NOT potentiallly world class players. World Class means amongst the very best in the world in their position. Villa have had some great players and some fantastic characters, but in over 50 years of watching Villa I can honestly say I have only seen one world clss player in Clartet and Blue. Many Premier League teams have had none. Players like Little, Gidman and Morley scarcely even played for England, never mind Euro or World Class (although they should have been capped more if it wasn't for the anti-Midlands bias that used to persist for 40 years pre - Capello). That one player we have had does not need to be named - because everyone who saw him knew he was world class. World Class is that obvious ... but we sing his praises to this day.

How England improved on Wednesday when Capello brought on a Villa man (Milner). He must realise that it is essential to play as many Villans as possible. Give Brad Friedel an Afro wig and call him Calamity - he will go. Stan is a good English name - he'll go. Richard Dunne - he's English innit.

I think a few people on here makes me glad your not our manager. Not an impact player - Jesus, can you imagine his pace hitting tired legs in extra time. And as for the Heskey argument, how many goals have England scored with Heskey in the team compared to the number of goals when Defoes been in the side? If anyone is suited to the prem only it's Jermaine Defoe. FFS, whenever Rooney and Defoe have started together up front neither of them have scored!!! You seem to remember that Englands worst period in recent years was without Heskey, once McClown bought him back in we started getting results again. Oh and BTW it's relatively in SA round the WC time
Longman
good player but cant see him making the WC squad if im honest even though he is blessed with pace.

Longman- if we're bringing on an impact player, then that means we need a goal, which means the opponents will be sitting back with most of the team. Gabby's pace will therefore be useless, because when has he ever used it to run past 2 or 3 defenders? His pace is great when playing on the counter attack for us, but without having much else, he wouldn't be good enough for the WC.
MrZeus
good player and should be knocking on the door...asking if he can make the squad that is lol

I think the Squad against Egypt shows which players are not going. Capello doesn't seem to be too big a fan of Young. I think he likes Gabby, but has others he prefers. Milner and Heskey definitely in, Downing not likely and Warnock only if Cole is injured still.
Francobaresi13
I agree with StennyVilla - Tony Daley is the only world class player we've ever had (that is who you were talking about right?) :P
