Martin O'Neill has singled out Fabian Delph's approach to criticism as being hugely refreshing, and said he expects big things from him and Delfouneso next season.
Speaking on the Official Site O'Neill praised the desire of Delph to improve by forensically studying his own performances and by being his own biggest critic after games.
'His attitude is refreshing. Sometimes you can be incredibly critical of yourself to the point that you become despondent, but there's nothing for him to be despondent about.'
O'Neill adds that by Delph's own values he wants to make a big impact in games, and he hasn't done that yet and that his opportunities have been limited, but the experienced gained in the games he has played, such as the Man U clash, have been great for him.
He also says that he believes Delph understands he hasn't made the typical 'step up' from a lower division, ie to a mid table or lower side where he might well have played more games...he joined us!
'He's joined a team sitting sixth or seventh in the league, hovering around the Champions League spot. A team in the League Cup Final, a team in the fifth round of the FA Cup, desperate to get through to the quarter final.
'He hasn't just come into a side that is trying to stay in the league.'
For me that makes his appearances all the more better because at least from my perspective his addition has added some bite to our midfield when he's been there.
Monny signs off in saying:
'Delph and for that matter, Delfouneso, have wonderful ability. I expect those two boys to be really, big players for us next season.'
You and me both Martin.![]()
