Top 4 Won't Like New League Proposals - MON Does

Good heavens above, the Sky Top Four Lovies won't like this?

There are proposals by the Premier League to make the final (4th) spot for the Champions League a play off at the end of each season.

The proposal is to put 4th, 5th, 6th and 7th (quite why I couldn't have just said 4th-7th I'm not totally sure in truth!) in a play off similar to the play offs for promotion to the Premiership for Championship teams.

4th would play 7th, 5th would play... you can work that out can't you? Then the winners of both games would play a game at Wembley to decide the final spot for the Champions League.

Arsenal and Liverpool especially, you would imagine, won't like that, as it has been a virtual shut out in recent years...

Martin O'Neill has given the thumbs up to the idea. An article I read earlier said that the backing was quite high (they need 14) as you would expect, surely anyone but the top four teams would vote yes to this? Gives 'everyone' not fighting a relegation battle the chance of a slice of the massive money the awful (sorry, it is, it has bastardised our league and made finishing 4th 'success') CL brings.

MON told the official site, 'Actually I think it's quite interesting. I wouldn't knock it on the head immediately, particularly if we finish seventh! It really is kind of interesting. I know the teams that finish fourth would be kind of galled if that was the case.'

Would just be our luck to finish the first year this happens though wouldn't it?!

MON added, 'I only heard about in on Monday and I've just given it a wee bit of thought. It's interesting to see what the whole Premier League club-wise thought about it because it has to be 14 clubs. I would say outside the top sides I think people might go for it.'

Would certainly help shake up the middle order and the second tier of teams towards the top wouldn't it? Could be a real money spinner as well, down side I guess is more games with managers always saying the players have enough games to contend with already.

What do you think?

Apparently Moyes isn't a fan of the idea - depends on the views of the rest of the league. I like the concept, but as has been debated on our forum I'm not convinced the idea has been properly thought through. It could end up in us losing our 4th champions league spot, putting the whole thing back to square 1.

That was the only point against I could really come up with, as you say, we could potentially lose the 4th place if we do follow through, although I guess they'd only go ahead with the right permission. It is unfair in many ways, as are the play offs in the lower leagues, but on the flipside, they can be very exciting and might open things up a little.

better way, as I've said numerous times in my CL rants, is to give the places to champions, so 1st in league, League Cup winners and FA Cup winners. Then maybe 2nd also. Used to be a competition for winners, now it is for also rans.

Dont like the idea myself and not just because i am an Arsenal fan. In the last 3 seasons Blackburn, Bolton & fulham have finished 7th and had this proposal been in place could of seen them in Europe. I dont see how anyone would benefit from those teams being in the competion except fans of those clubs. The CL which already has a rubbish Group stage would add another(posible) couple of average/poor teams making it easier for the big teams to win it, We would eventualy lose our 4th spot place because it works on co effieciences etc. A better solution would be for the FA cup winners to go head to head with 4th spot.

thats a bit shallow and selfish paul the big four are the big four because they get massive funds for champs League, who's to say blackburn, bolton and fulham couldnt improve ther whole structure with that financial backing and become the new 'arsenal' maybe?

agree with claretandbluearmy on that note, with the money the top four have the 'monopoly' on, many of us could improve which is why I say the CL has ********ised the league, those who didn't get in at the right time have been pretty strongly shut out since. Our timing was awful, we were 2nd in the 1st season of the PL and got feck all !

son_of_cher, right! Remember when everton got 4th the year liverpoo won it? Prompt rule change. Even when pool got drawn against an obscure Welsh club that were gagging to play liverpool. That whole episode - including that draw - stank to high Heaven.

paul_ownz - If the PL were to award champions league places based on coefficients presumabley they'd go the the 'big 4' every year regardless of finishing positions, so in that respect the PL has got to concentrate on it's own game and let UEFA worry about the numbers imo. Personally I'm open to anything that would improve the premier league as a spectacle...having said that I've always believed the champions league should be for the champions ONLY, it's already been prosessed and commercialised enough over the last decade, and for me a 7th place team qualifying would be the last straw (although 3rd and 4th aren't much better!)

I would like to see one CL place awarded to the FA Cup winners. And the 3rd place be up for a playoff between the 3rd and 6th place. This would raise the stakes and value of the FA Cup, with all clubs including the SKY FOUR all taking it more seriously. It may mean that this results in a weaker 2 teams getting the chance to play in the CL, but you can argue that a team that rarely gets a shot at it will try harder. I think we should something different than awarding all 4 places to the top 4 of the PL. That is has become stale and boring! And it would give Villa a better chance of CL footy, and that should as fans be our main interest!

Far too much football is played already. The only way this can work is if the Premier League is reduced to 18 teams. Personally, I think it's ridiculous that this hasn't happened already, but then turkey's don't tend to vote for Christmas. Nothing wrong with a playoff competition. But why not do this properly. As The Fear rightly says, those who aren't champions have achieved nothing in the league, so why not have playoffs for the 2nd, 3rd and 4th spots? 2nd plays 7th, 3rd plays 6th, and 4th plays 5th. The winners of these games play in the Champions League. They'd be one off games, played at the highest seed's ground, so the highest placed teams are rewarded, less football is played, and there's more excitement. Also, the novelty of playing at Wembley is preserved.

I think CL places should be awarded alphabetically. ;)

I always thought that Champions were winners. Cut it back to 1 place per country and that's the end of the 'top four' money bias. I know it won't happen.
