Villa & Spurs Managers Relatively Happy With Point

Martin O'Neill pointed out in his official site post match reaction (Click Here) the rock that was our keeper yesterday v Spurs also saying how fantastic the boys at the back were for us.

On the defenders he said 'They are prepared to be very, very brave when it is demanded.' And on Brad Friedel 'I just think Brad has been exceptional. In the last number of weeks now, his performances have been terrific. He's having a great time. I think he has been reinvigorated with the coming in of Brad Guzan. They get on very well together but there is a bit of competition.'

On the game he admitted it was 'difficult' and had hoped that the side would have made more out of our counter attacks.

'Tottenham are a very fine side and they pegged us back in the second half. In the last 20 minutes of the game, they were putting it into the penalty area, which is absolutely their prerogative to do that.'

MON with hand to mouth

Appy Arry told the Official Spurs site

'I thought we played well and that's always the main thing for me. We created all the chances but just couldn't get the break. I thought we were the better side and I thought the same when we drew at Villa Park. They got some great blocks in and their centre-halves kept throwing their bodies in the way. They did that well and they are well-known for doing that. I couldn't fault the way we played.' Adding 'It would have been great to get the three points but it wasn't to be.'

Very dissapointed with how our 2 games against spuds have panned out....We have basically played with everyone behind the ball for 150 mins out the 180...We almost seem worried about taking them on & the football has been very bad in both matches with just long balls gettin hoofed out & coming straight back at us...When I look at our midfield we should be doing more to impose ourselves on these games as opposed to constantly lookin to nick games by a chance or set piece which to do you need a world class striker which we do not have...Would let both carew & heskey go in the summer and look to replace both & add to our midfield. Defence lookin awesome & will continue to be which is needed to become a great team, but I do wonder if O'Neill can take us to the next level the big one. It will be an interesting summer & an important one to see if he can get the right people in & make the next step. The progress has been fantastic both on & off the pitch & I hope this does not level out.....Looking fwd to the rest of the season with more exiting games coming up...up the villa

p,s wanted to post earlier but reading all the rubbish & abuse on the other reports with the deluded spuds fans put me off...and there was no football discusion going on just childish arguments(grow up people)Glensider if reading this, thanks for the reports always a joy to read, and excellent ratings for the defence but would have to question the high marks for some of the others, although they all put a shift in.....

We have only scored 1 goal in 6 league games and I'm not holding my breath for a deluge of goals against Man U, must be approaching some sort of record for least number of Villa goals over 7 consecutive league games, the fact that our defence is so good is crucial or we'd be in freefall

Spuds will soon be 7th and then the've got a fine run of games in April where they will get 0 points.
Group league of top 7 teams on an average points per game basis=
1 Chelsea
2 Man U
3 Villa
4 Man City
5 Arsenal
6 Liverpool
6 Spurs
Guess Spuds they can't hack it against the better teams.

I seem to be the only person pleased with the performance, football seasons about results, grinding them out whn you arent playing well. We havent really played well all year yet have ground out results against 2 of our rivals and beaten fulham. Id snap your hand off for another ugly point against united wednesday, then we can concentrate on getting back to winning games against lesser teams in the league. How have spurs done against their rivals in the top 7 this season? not as well as us

Think that is the key pauled177, quite often we've not played well, like Saturday (apart from defence who played very well) and still we have picked up the points.

I'm with The Fear, forget all the negatives, we were awful and got a point, well done lads!

pauled177, in fairness we may not have done as well against our top 7 rivals but at least we can say we have a go. And even saying that we beat City and Liverpool, dominated you lot twice and only lost to United and Liverpool after some very poor decisions by Mr Howard. You definitely earned a point on Sat but you have to be a bit dissappointed how you have now spent the best part of 180 minutes defending against a team that you are pretty evenly match with player for player. Its almost like you've been scared to have a go and compete for the 3pts.

Absolutly magicmerson & Fear, if we are keeping clean sheets and collecting points on performances like that (sarcastically aimed at the attacking side of the team!!!) then I for one am happy, would have been good to win as would it be to have a 6 figure salary but hey ho, we muddle through!

Bring on Utd, we've kept Defoe quiet, just need to do the same to Rooney and should be more points in the bag :-)

Unfortunately the difference between Defoe and Rooney is huge and not just in height

ant1ant1, have to agree with you there. If Defoe had the ability to get the ball down and protect it he might have had more luck against such a packed box (though he possibly should of had a pen ;-)). Rooney is a totally different class and if you sit back like that agaisnt United I'd expect him to find the space to score. Maybe our lot should get their notebooks ready and watch how its done!

Mjb we creamed you in the first half of the Villa Park game so make that 135 mins , Ashley Young was running you ragged then harry made a switch that took Ash out of the game and it was yours from then on . Thats the major difference between us , Martin would have changed Heskey for Carew or Sidwell (which seems to be the only moves he makes} while we have some young dynamic talent sitting on the bench getting piles .

I don't remember you "creaming" us for 45 mins but I get you point. We have the same issues with Harry making the same predictable changes each game.....or lack of in saturdays case. That is the point I was making with Villa though. Player for Player I think we are very similar but considering the flare players that you do have MON does tend to set you up fairly negatively especially against the top half of the table. I watched you're United game earlier in the seasona nd in all fairness I thought United dominated you only for you to nick a one goal win. Thats all very well but is that how MON will approach the Champions Leauge games if you are the ones to make it? If I were a Villa fan I'd like to see him send the team out to have a real goat sides because you definitely have teh players to do it and the defenders to cope if it left you a little open at times. Thats just my opinion though.

MJB I think you are correct, the fact that we play a centre back at right back shows, attacking is second to defending as far a tactics go, frustrating yes, but better than the dross we were used to for years, so happy to see where the 5 year plan takes us, If we made the top 4 then maybe the flair players may be attracted/wanted, maybe not, we are still waiting to find out what the grand plan is, certainly moving in the right direction, far more quality players now, can't really complain, even though I do

As much as I like MON i do feel that we have no attacking backbone or thrust towards goal other than counter attack football. It works for so long and then we come up against quality and then have to defend, defend, defend. We need a player who is more creative than Petrov, a freekick specialist who can find the net! and a natural finisher. Until we get these we will always be predictable to play against. Don't get me wrong we have some quality and glimpses of a bright future but its not enough to kick on with IMHO. Will there be investment in the summer? Will we change our style of play? Will MON ever play all of the subs allowed????
