'If It's Football, It's Vital'

Martin O'Neill 'Delighted' With Villa Point

Well, lets face it, that wasn't great but we didn't lose and a point down in London isn't all bad?

We didn't really turn up apart from the defence who again had to put up with a great deal of pressure because our attacking intent wasn't right. Emile Heskey put in the effort at least but pulled up with another injury, then on came John Carew and sadly we were from thereon in down to ten men.

John Carew, Carew
Well the flipping HELL WERE YOU
Try having a shot or two
John Carew, Carew

;o)

Ho hum, I'd have taken a point before the game started, it was a mustn't lose situation and despite the promise of fast attacking footie from the managers pre-game, or was it just appy arry? the game was a bit of a non event. Spurs had more chances but they didn't put them away and as much as some of them are already bleating about how awful we were, if you can't as the bestest team in the universe beat such a 'bad team' as us (their view not mine) then did-dums basically.

Not that many Villa fans seem happy, not so much with the result, a point away from home is never a disaster, more the no show and lack of attacking options or intent.

Hey ho, the ever excellent Glensider away match report will follow tomorrow, as well as a friend of mine's opinions for Vital in the Observer (oh and my boorish ramble in Maxim!) and in the meantime, Martin O'Neill has spoken ... and what did he have to say I hear you cry... well shut up a minute and I'll tell you:

On the official site he said .... no, sorry, fed up waiting, I've got some tea ready... will bring the match reaction tomorrow (you don't get this sort of dedication anywhere else you know!), he did say on ESPN he was 'delighted' with a point so there is a match reaction of sorts for you! In the meantime...

Richard Dunne, a colossus at the back again, said: 'It was very difficult. Tottenham are a very good side and the same as ourselves are pushing for the top four. Our main objective was to come here and take some points so we're quite pleased. We had a blip over Christmas so to get back in the points is important.'

Dunne said that the Spurs penalty claim might have been valid (then again, Dawson hand balled in the first half) and MON added, 'I honestly have not seen it. Where have you heard that phrase before? If you tell me it looks like a penalty and we've had a bit of luck then we're content.'

A little harsh on JC fear. I thought that you could have had shearer and rooney leading your line and they would never have scored with the service they got. Thought gabby disappeared completely. But thats probably a result of every throw-in going to JC and every long ball and every free kick etc. Became easy to control us - every time the ball went out wide there were three or four spurs players covering leaving acres of space in the middle. Just milner and petrov were camped in our own half...

Point away from home deserved or undeserved will do for me . Spurs have not conceded in 4 at home and we have the best defensive record away from home in the Prem (11), so there you go

thought Spurs played some lovely stuff at times and i too am content with a draw. we kept a clean sheet and whilst we half turned up today....i was delighted with the way the defenders put their bodies on the line at times... bentley seemed like his old self again.....and performances like this will help his world cup aspirations......perhaps at the expense of our own ashley and dj stu i'll take that point today....

Bentley is a'champayne charlie' who's going nowhere in football, he's only playing well to get a move away and no-one wants him. He's well behind DJ and Ash in the pecking order.

Seriously do we pay Carew actual money for these performances

Astriel, I thought Gabby did excellent up front with the limited service he got. Having a go at him compared to the performance of Carew is an absolute joke. I thought Bentley did okay, but what did he produce with the many chances he had to provide. Dunne was immense

Our defence is incredible, Dunne in particular is a mountain, but lumping the ball forward to a poor big man means the defence has to be great as the ball just keeps coming back, we need to play an extra centre mid to help move the team forward as a unit

Dunne was a ******** colossus and i thought you deserved your point. Yes we missed countless chances again but Gabby was denied in the first half by a great save by Gomes aswell. A fair result imo.

Huddersfield, you do them a service. They nicked a point they didn't deserve - no, let me re-phrase that, we gifted them a point for the second game in a row through our inability to put the ball in the net. I agree that Villa's defence was good (and I wish we'd gone for Dunne when we had the chance) but our crocked centre was not troubled tonight and our strikers missed a bag of opportunities. The debate is over, my Villa friends. Tonight we proved that we are the better team and we are best placed to steal Liverpool's fourth place (if anybody's going to do it!).

Feel your being a bit harsh on JC, he held the ball up well on a couple of occasions, and considerin he has spent 4 weeks on the sidelines injured he did as well, if not better than Gabby, who had a great game against fulham last week, however sayin that we didnt create enough chances, but the defence, especially Dunne was immense! Also credit to Freidel, that one save especially was world class!

Spurs fans really need to to learn more about Football... we didn't deserve to win, but neither did they, for all their chances none of them were really clear cut and we did what we needed to defensively to deserve a point. Sadly, our off the ball movement is really lacking, and until we get a striker and midfielder who can find space to receive a good pass and make something happen when we they have the ball at their feet we will continue to play like this against the teams around us. Saying that, O'Neill is far more qualified than any of us to be the man in charge...I remember complaints when Gregory was in charge about finishing 6th reguarly...look what happened after he left

That was probably the worst Villa have played all season reminiscent of the Wigan game . If Spuds cant score against us when we are playing like headless chickens then i dont think they have anything to brag about . Even Milner couldn't find one of his own players . Spuds are lucky we didn't turn up today . One out of ten for Mon for not using his subs when we needed a change .

spuds fans really are deluded. Villa were awful today apart from the back line. They're not going to break the monopoly of the top 4 if they can't score past us on a performance like that. Had to laugh at their boring boring villa chants. 1 they obviously weren't paying attention to the constanst HOOOOFS and Rugby punts up to their very own Rodney Trotter up front and 2 didn't they label Arsenal with this tag when Arsenal were masters of the 1-nil victory and won countless championships and cups. Ironic that Gooners now play some of the most easy on the eye football around and Spuds are content with Johny Wilkinson launches. All together now in a cockney accent "we play the Tottenham way don't we, lovely jubbly football" WHAT A LOAD OF B******S" ha ha

Hello chaps, 1st post for me and all that. I've been reading your comments on this excellent site for months now but Fears growing frustration with Carew has compelled me to join as i feel exactly the same. The faith Martin has shown this guy and the Holte end just baffles me, he is holding us back. We should of got rid ages ago. Despite our rock solid defence yesterday as soon as JC arrives we just blast balls to him and he lacks the necessary skill and football brain to do anything with it. For the remainder of the season a 5 man midfield with Delph would see us better at places like spurs. Come on Martin use the squad!

I agree Sid I think a 4-5-1 with dellph in or just give The Fonz a run alongside Gabby.

"Despite our rock solid defence yesterday as soon as JC arrives we just blast balls to him and he lacks the necessary skill and football brain to do anything with it." Whose fault is it that we blast the balls to him though? Carew's for being big??? The movement was still lacking from other players meaning the defence had no option but to launch it. This isn't a John Carew love session, especially as he can be so much better than he has been this season, but the reasoning for the performance cannot be squarely aimed at him. In regards to the substitutions, I think we should also take into account a game at Spurs when Martin Jol was in charge when we were 4-1 up and brought some players on (FT 4-4). Although, like the majority, I wish he would give some players a rest and give the fringe players some hope that they may actually get a game, O'Neill may still have bad memories of that game and not want to take any risks to disrupt the flow of what the players on the pitch are doing.

Yes Franco i agree with you that it's crazy for the rest of the team to keep hitting JC with these balls, it's not his fault but he should still be able to bring people into play and he just is not doing it consistently enough. For me though he is only effective these days at set pieces. Given the attributes the bloke has he should be a total beast..
