'If It's Football, It's Vital'

Interview With A Spurs Fan

OxfordSpur from Vital Spurs answers our question ahead of the crunch game Saturday evening.

1) So, how is your season treating you so far?

At the start of the season I would have bitten your hand off to be where we are at this point. Let’s just hope it continues. The turnaround in 12 months has been staggering to be honest, both on and off the pitch. The squad is now very tight (almost too tight), but in giving every player the expectation that they can and will get games could be vital as the final third of the season come into play. There is no point in having a massive squad and half of them never play competitive football, as they are potentially a waste of space as they are simply not match sharp.

2) Riding high, are you optimistic that will continue and without lillywhite specs on, a) will you finish top four b) who do you see as the main threat to that place?

At the start of the season I predicted Spurs would finish 6th and I tipped Man City to get 4th and I don’t think I will be far wrong on either. City now have the squad, it is now about how they handle the pressure and I can see that it may be getting to them based on recent performance. Liverpool are playing terribly at times and football wise are the worst side of the four contenders, but the fact they are struggling and still very much in the running should be a worry for the rest.

3) Keane to Celtic. Why was he allowed to leave again and do you care?!

I have defended Robbie since his return, but for all the reasoning as to why he isn’t playing well are looking more like excuses to be honest. There has to be some truth in the fact that he was bought in, more in panic than actual plan at a time when we had just lost Jermain Defoe to a long term injury last January. Robbie is a great character, but for all of his posturing about being a great team man, was his complaining about not being an automatic pick, working to the detriment of others around him. This is a player who has stated that he was miserable because he wasn’t playing, but in truth played some part in almost every game this season.

As for do I care, not really and I remain a fan of the player. What troubles me is that he doesn’t really gel with any of the three other strikers and I would guess he and Gudjohnsen are far too similar player to ever work. I always felt that Robbie needed either a back to goal striker (Berbatov/Carew, Jones) or a quick front runner such as Agbonlahor or Darren Bent, so in the end we weren’t getting the best from Robbie and he was looking toothless at Spurs. I think he will be fantastic at Celtic, but that is more about the pub football they play in that division. If he scored 20 goals he would be a Celtic legend, but that still wouldn’t tell us whether he was good enough to play at the top of the Premiership.

4) Appy Arry. Long term manager for Tottenham, all happy and merry with him?

I assume that he will stay as long as he isn’t in jail... in his time at the club he has been ‘triffic and it is hard to quantify the change he has made to the club. We are organised on the pitch and appear to have a plan off of it. I think changing the mindset of the players has and still is the biggest task he has and that may well be why we will still see a high turnover of players over the next window or two, as he looks to bring in strength of character as much as ability as a player

5) If you could have one of our players to Spurs, who would it be and why?

This answer probably changes every time I answer it (fickle football fan), but I will base it more on how I feel we need or would fit in as opposed to who I think is your best player. A player like James Milner offers so much as a footballer and winner, much in the same way I guess Steven Gerrard offers Liverpool. He appears to drive the team on regardless of how he is playing and will give his all to get the result. Similarly Richard Dunne offers the same for me and he was a player I wanted at Spurs although I was in a very small minority. Both are leaders and take responsibility for the team and their own performance, I would take that over Ashley Young’s ability everytime. Well until you ask this question to me next season...

6) Who should Villa be afraid of in the Spurs team on Saturday?

We are a team with genuine options, which always makes it difficult to identify individuals. Jermaine Defoe will always get chances, whilst I assume Bentley and Modric will give you trouble from wide and Luka cutting inside gives us extra in the middle, plus it makes him very difficult to pick up as a marker. The player I will pick as the difference could be Gareth Bale, especially if he plays behind Luka Modric. I assume you will play Luke Young at full back and the pace and desire to get to the corner and put the ball in, could make his life very difficult.

7) Opinions on Martin O'Neill and Villa?

I have always likes MON from his time at Wycombe, but he has always been a little too cautious for me in terms of bringing in the big player I think you need at any given time. I love the fact that he has built a British core and a team full of pace and energy, but if I were a Villa fan, I would be a little frustrated at times over a lack of a player with the X-factor, but then again does he now have that in James Milner?

8) Ok, let’s be having you, what is your prediction?

In terms of style I still see Villa as being a side to trouble teams away from home. You still seem a perfect counter attacking side to me and that worries me a little to be honest. Add to that you have longer preparation with our game last night perhaps adding to fatigue in our legs, I will go with a 2-1 win for Villa, but then I always get it wrong when I predict a Spurs loss...

Could I finally send my best wishes to a family member of mine, a lifelong Villa fan and season ticket holder, who was very badly hurt in a fire in Liverpool a few weeks ago. Get well soon Kieran and if any of you Villa fans have a few player or club contacts who could make a young man very happy at a tough time do give me a shout...

With thanks to OxfordSpur from Vital Spurs. Deanovilla has done the reciprocal interview with Vital Spurs, so to see 'our side' go to here: A cosy chat with Vital Villa

Our beloved Ox is winding you up. There aren't gonna be a lot of counters on Saturday cause Corluka and Bale are gonna keep the back line free of Agbon..infestation.

Have to agree, can only see a Villa win. Despite the form of Bentley, we are totally lost without Lennon. Hes our best player and our biggest threat, without him we're slow and predictable.

I honestly can't see many goals and think we'll see 2 sides terrified of losing play out a disappointing bore draw. Hope I'm wrong...

Corluka is petrified of players running at him, he will get murdered again by Young, downing, Milner, and Gabby. Your defense is not the best.

At least you'll have a decent manager this week in terms of respecting the opposition. I admire the way O'Neill gave Whinger both barrels last week. If only there were more articulate, intelligent and formidable intellects within football, then the sour faced hypocrite would not get away with his slanderous comments.

Stig its unlikely to be when we have Ledley King and Woodgate completley crocked. Oh how i long for them to get fit, they are proven top quality its such a shame theyre so injury prone. Dawson and Bassong are decent cover but miles apart in terms of ability

"corluka is terrified of players running at him, he will get murdered again by young, downing, milner and gabby"...WHAT??????.....corluka mugged off young so much last season that MON had to move him to the other wing! to say he had him in his back pocket is an understatement!....when we played villa this season at villa park they where given a lesson....although it ended a draw, we all know they where passed of the park, and battered....spurs have IMO a far move technically gifted midfield and attack, while villa do have a grit about them a real work ethic, i still feel spurs should be looking for and expecting 3 points from this one, and were at home!....cannot understand the pessimism from some spurs fans on here!

lillywhites, corlucka was dragged off in one game against us because young raped him time and time again! but thats by the by, this time he wont know what to do as he will have downing and young switching, i hope bale and corlucka both get forward a lot because we have the best defence in the league and with them players we can easily break on you and nick a goal. your problem is your arrogance, fans and team- think you have made it and you have done nothing yet

I think, by your comments, 100%, that you are the arrogant one. And unlike you, I wouldn't extrapolate that to tar all Villa fans with. Just you. If Spurs can't make top4 this season, and I seriously doubt we can, I hope it's your boys.

MON knows that we sat back too much at our place and he won't make the same mistake of trying to defend the 1-0 scoreline this time. Glad Lennon isn't playing because our left back is right footed, but hope we return the favour of scoring from a handball ala Dawson aswell!!

They murdered us second forty-five at Brummagem B6, and in truth really deserved to return to north London with all three points in the bag. Having said that, they failed to take advantage of the possession they had, and Emile Heskey almost won it for us when he flicked that header just over the bar at the death. Yes, they are capable of turning us over on Saturday, but no more than we are capable of returning home with the spoils. Admittedly they are a talented outfit, so are we. Two evenly matched sides, it could go either way.

Villa and ManUtd are the best counter-attack teams in the PL. Add the fact that every side below us in the table come to WHL to park the bus, and you get a game where they will defend hard and try to hit us on the breaks. Not very glamourable, but could be very rewarding. Really an unpredictable match. Could it be devastating to the losing team? Nooooo...every game has that aura around it this season. I think we are playing "our most important match of the season" for the 11th consecutive match now:) COYS!

Oxfordspur, honest answers and a tough game to call. Of course Villa will counter attack and then sit back when we don't have the ball, isn't that what playing away from home is all about?? This could be another 4-4 or a bore draw but either team could take this. I do hope it willl be Villa but we'll see. All the best to both teams and both sets of fans and let's hope there isn't too much ill feeling post match! UTV. BTW, get well Kieron.

this is just some banter i copied from facebook with a bunch of my surprisingly arrogant spurs friends.. - Milner now plays as a central midfielder. Villa look like a new team with him there, he gets more involved than he did on the wing, and can win games with more input. - With Milner playing in the center, Villa welcome Stuart Downing on the left wing (he did not play in the home game versus spurs) and with his arrival, Ashley Young has been able to constantly swap flanks with him throughout the match and the pair of them have racked a higher chance creation rate from wingplay in 2010 than any other team. - Pretty sure you won't have Lennon in this match? After all, he was the only player that managed to breach the Villa defence in that game, and, I feel, that was ONLY due to the fact that he was playing against a right back (at left back). - Your lot are playing tonight. You threw it away in the first leg and are now (hopefully) going to have to field a strong team in order to break down a confident leeds side at home. They are a rough bunch so i'm hoping for some injuries and fatigue to be accumilated. But i do hope you beat them because that means more games for you and the possibility of a Villa Spurs final. Tantilising. However if you lose, that's your season *****ed, basically. - It's a fact that Villa are better away from home. - (MOST IMPORTANT POINT) James Collins and Steven Warnock are now available for this game, they weren't for the first one. With those boys in the squad, Villa now have the strongest defence in the league. Check the facts. We played *****TY habib beye at right back and luke young (a quality right back) at left back versus you. which gave you guys a great chance to get at us via the wings. I think Warnock may still be injured though, so could line up with luke young at left-back with cuellar (a center back) at right back and collins dunne in center. - Reo-Coker is injurned, so there's no chance of him playing for villa with a spurs shirt on again. Gonna be such a good game Saturday, and I disagree with you (as usual) lilywhites - young raped and will rape again. I'm gonna say draw but I WOULD LOVE a villa win -. I WOULD LOVE.

Then you should take a look at the match thread in 100% Villa. It's an image you guys have carved out yourself. We Villa fans have a reputation for being fickle which doesn't come from nowhere. I expect and hope for a Villa win tomorrow and I could give countless reasons why, but should we lose tomorrow I'd be the first to say congratulations. Look out for my pre-match head-to-head on here in the morning and you'll see what I mean. To put it simply majority of Spurs' fans, with exceptions of course, regard themselves well above your station in the English game which shines through like a beacon in the fog. Hence your arrogant reputation.

JayVFC - The problem here is you've backed yourself into a corner by basing opinions on 'the majority of spurs fans' over a handful of people you've 'met' or internet blogs and forums. If you think that's a representative sample and characterises hundreds of thousands or millions of people probably makes you quite arrogant

So you think hoping for a win, or even expecting one is arrogance? Somebody needs to inform you of the difference between arrogance and confidence. As I said reputations don't come from nowhere. come off it jay. if a spurs fan wrote what you wrote then every villa fan would be on here calling him an arrogant piece of s.h.i.t but you do it and you just call it being confident. i would say most fans are pretty arrogant when it comes to their team. anyway i can't wait for the game, i am actually not feeling that confident and i think you might nick the win but it was a feeling i had before playing man city as well but then we pumped them in what was a one sided game by far. i am hoping and EXPECTING the same then lol.

Not at all. Afterall, arrogance is only confidence without humility. I've no problem with confident fans because that's the joy of being a fan, but without humility you're asking for it because sooner or later, everyone has a bump back down to earth. I suppose that's why I have a general distaste for Arsenal fans, they think they have a divine right to win the league because they play 'beautiful football,' Arsene Wenger proved last week that anything other than their style is deemed long ball. Arrogance! With regards to the game though, should be a cracker. Although mostly the same faces, this is a completely different Villa side than the one you played at VP. Downing in the team has given us so much being able to have interchanging wingers and more importantly, a central Milner weaving his magic. You're full backs will need to be at their best and I'm really looking forward to the battle of the playmakers in Milner and Modric. It'll be a close one but we might just edge you out. Saying that, you may just edge us out. Who know's?!

OH FFS Jay (and others) give it a rest. There's good and bad at every club. I think the majority of spurs fans that have come on this thread have been more than fair in their assessments of the game. I'm hoping for a villa win, hoping rather than expecting, Spurs are a good side and they are at home and it wont be easy. I don't however, read much into the game at VP earlier this season. That was before Downing came into the side and Milner switched to centre midfield, we have been a completely different side since then and Spurs wont dominate the game like they did then.

All the best for the weekend Villains, personally I can't go past a draw - obviously neither side will want to lose. 1-1.

JayVFC - but the rest of us have to read it. In the end all that name-calling is daft and boring. The facts are that spurs are looking good on their day this season. Results don't lie. And they've had a few of those - looked good in what could have been a difficult replay at leeds. If MON doesn't have a sesible think tactically about who he plays where and if certain players go absent, we'll be stuffed. But the same applies to spurs. If both managers get the tactics right and both lots of players turn up (Bentley looks like a *new signing* !!) it'll be a cracking match and difficult to call. Hoping for a villa win. I don't really care if we steal it or blag it. Just win. Keep the season interesting for both teams.

I can never understand why we seem to hate each other so much. Our clubs are so similar, both with potential but never quite getting there - we almost broke the top 4 a few season back and ballsed it up long before lasagne-gate and last season the villians threw it away. Both have always played football to win and entertain never resorting to boring tactics like the top 4. Our matches both home anhd away are picked each season so SKY/ESPN must see how entertaining our matches are. I live 20 miles from Villa Park, in a Villa town and whenever I say who I support seem to be hated more than a bluenose. Then I read some posts on here from Yids and we are disrespectful to Villa. I just dont get it, have I missed something over the years - do Villa hate us because we signed Steve Hodge and do we hate Villa because they sold us Steve Hodge!!!!!! ps Spurs 3 - 0 'cos I'm an arrogant Yid - LOL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Some villa fans are a letdown to the club. Some spurs fans are a letdown to theirs too. Personally, it'll be a great game but i cant see anything other than a draw - 1-1 and not enough for either team!

lol, why does all this crazy banter only happen with Spurs ~ I love it :-)
Win, Lose or draw, it's going to be an emmense month for the mighty Villa, it will leave us either celebrating or crying in our Broad Street beer. UTV

Spurs fans seem to be more level headed these days after their meteoric rise from bottom of the table to 7th last year gave them a headrush. I for one welcome the change, and the humility, but if they win tomorrow I will expect the "we're going to win the league next year" attitude to reappear. Looking forward to the game anyway and if Arsenal lose on Sunday, either of us could catch them in the coming weeks!!

100% it was ZOKORA who was hauled off against Young last year. Corluka came on to steady the ship and Young then didn't get a kick.

we could apologise for having an arrogant/confident minority by giving them Jermain Jenas as a peace offering, or if they win/lose or draw they should take him up to brum.

lol i think a new challenge would really get the best out of jenas . but i still think he does more damage to our side when he plays for us than he could ever do against us

i'm watching the game with three other spurs fans and a united neutral who will be cheering on the villa. there aren't all that many villa in cambridge, and i got thrown out of the same pub last year when villa got all 3 at the lane, but i'd love nothing more than to do it all again tomorrow night. all in all, these two teams should - scrap that, WILL produce a cracking 90 minutes of football. I just worry about the aftermath. It's not banter with this lot. Since becoming a member on Vital Football, Spurs have climbed meteorically to my third most-hated team in the premier league. behind the blues and narrowly behind wolves. I accept that all teams have idiots and I wish that this wasn't the focus of my comment, but their lot absolute slate Villa whenever we meet. I don't know if it's envy, I don't know if it's caution, I don't know if it's just pure "don't like us". Despite hating a majority of their fans, I accept that Tottenham do play some nice football and are a very good team indeed. I expect a hell of a battle tomorrow night, but it is one that I expect Villa to leave with all 3 points. If we lose, I'd be the first to congratulate them. But I fail to see how most of their fans on this site can say what they do say about us when we are only two points behind them, with a game in hand, with most of the relatively difficult games behind us, with great confidence, and with great support.

All the Spurs mates I have are great for banter, and as passionate for their club as I am for my Villa. I see a minority of Spurs fans like that on this site and that's total fair play - good on them! Before I joined this site, I would have definitely gone with "If we can't get 4th - I hope Spurs do". But these days, if we can't get 4th this season, I'd rather Liverpool got it. Then Everton. Then Spurs. Then $ity. And although this is going back slightly from my point - I still think 3rd is up for grabs. I reckon Arse will lose to Chelsea and draw with Pool. Leaving them right in the mix for 3rd/4th - which would be fantastic for all clubs involved but them. And yes, I'm rambling.. We have THE best defence in the league, but I worry that they have an attack or flair player that can break them down. Such a shame that Warnock will not be available against them again, but a backline of Young, Collins, Dunne, Cuellar would definitely be better than what we had against them at VP in - Young, Cuellar, Dunne, Beye. We also have Downing in the squad, a fantastic buy (even some of the Spuds would agree), thus allowing james "everything" miner to become a difference-maker in the center. Stilyan is having his best season yet. Ashely is starting to retain fabulous form, and Gabby is full of confidence. Personally, the return of Carew for this fixture is indeed a welcome one. But Heskey is playing fantastically IMHO. For them, you've got to get Petrov on Krancjar. The man is brilliant. And also, as usual, the wings have got to be utilised. I think they can win the game down the center, but we can win the game down the flanks. Really haven't been as excited for a league game since away at Old Trafford. Best of luck to both teams and hopefully my rambling is legible and somewhat coherent, at least. I hope there is only banter from the winning side (I can't see why so many people have predicted a draw), and I also hope that whichever side does win does not get carried away. That said, I will be ecstatic in my little cambridge pub surrounded by yids. Ecstatic and, unfortunately, in intoxicated combat. UTV.

I am a very relaxed peaceful person throughout my life, BUT when it comes to Spuds, Twitchy Arry Redface and the arrogant cocky miserable eastenders loving gypsies, it makes my blood boil I hate them with a passion far more than I hate the blues. Spuds ARE arrogant you only have to look at the team Defoe and Bentley ooze arrogance, and Arry Redface is nothing less than a gobby thief. Im sure Spuds are spending over their means their wage structure and Fan base dont level out for me I feel/hope Spuds will become the next Leeds, Southampton, Pompey, west ham (most of the teams Arry Redface has been at!) No matter the score tonight I will always find enjoyment in being a Villa fan and hater of Spuds! UTV

feels like a draw to me unless we score early doors. I cant see you winning and I've really tried to take off my 'lillywhite specs' for that.. So long as we don't both spend 90 mins hoofing the ball in the air and you lot don't perform your famous Berlin Wall impersonation. Let's hope there's some goals and some football on the ground.
