'If It's Football, It's Vital'

A Credit To The Club

Martin O'Neill has hailed the lads tonight as a 'credit to the club' after the battling performance they put in against Arsenal.

Speaking on the Official Site after overseeing us to a 0-0 draw, Monny commented that we managed to shut Arsenal down successfully but was bitterly disappointed that we didn't manage to get the goal and all 3 points.

'I thought we played splendidly in the game, I thought Ashley put in some incredible balls that just needed a glance from someone.'

He adds that Gabby and Downing were desperately unlucky with their chances, and that he'd have been devastated for the lads if we'd have lost it in the final 10 minutes, despite Arsenal hitting the woodwork as often as we had a shot on target.

'They were more than excellent, I thought they were an absolute credit to the football club.'

No just frustrated that we seem to be repeating last season's league shenanigans, yet every game is talked of as 'fantastic' 'brilliant' 'we didn't deserve to lose' 'we played great'. Aren't you?

If the ref had given us our well earned free kicks outside the box maybe we would have won , Gallas bringing down Gabby and Sol Campbell (who should of had a red) unable to stop Dunne so he tripped him as he looked like he was on his way to getting the goal of the season . If i was Dunne i wouldn't have just kicked that arse player i would have gone crazy ape bonkers with a chainsaw . I know its ifs and buts .. but your only going to get so many chances against quality teams like Arsenal so if their taken away from you so is the game most times . Mike .. Enjoy your articles .. keep it up

A better ref would've definitely made a difference I agree, and yes some of the box based fouls would've increased our shots on target tally aswell I would hope, but two shots in a home match (in what was a relatively open match I would say) sticks a bit.

I think its a little unfair to start saying that we are repeating last season already,we have had Arsenal twice and Liverpool in the last month. That is a very difficult run of fixtures,we have them games out of the way and we are still in it.

It's how it feels though, and that's all I can comment on as I don't know the future any better than others. But the same old tactics, same old subs (and lack thereof), selections when things don't work and we've hit the new year and the league draws are back, strikers not scoring are back etc etc.

I know I'm not alone in hoping we do a Blackburn in our next league match, but again two chances on target all match speaks volumes as to our problems last season and at least up front, nothing has changed in a meaningful way and I don't have faith it will before the window closes.

The money simply isnt available to improve the squad the Jan. Ok we got 3 million for Gardner and maybe 2M on its way for Habib to come, but if we cant off load Shorey and Harewood, then 5M aint gonna buy us a decent striker. Personally i think we should off load Carew while we can and take a gamble on Pavlochenko (spelling ? sorry), if not trust in the FONZ being our future..... Heyyyyy !!!! Happy Days !!!!!

I agree with mike, nothing has changed up front and nothing will while MON persists with strikers who can't even find the target, let alone score. If we cannot afford to buy, which I accept, then please give the Fornz a chance. He has a much better goal per game rate than any of the others. We don't need a striker who can do fancy lay-offs and hold the ball up, we want one that can put the ball in the net. Four league games without scoring says it all. I wonder what needs to happen before Fonz gets his chance? His goal per game ratio says he is due a run starting in the team. Come on Martin, be brave and show some faith in the latent talent we have at the club. At this rate we are going to be lucky to finish above the bluenoses, let alone challenge for the Champions League. One other comment, I thought Wenger's comments were revealing, when he was talking about our midfielders scoring goals not our strikers.

Unfortunately if MON puts Fonzie in and he doesnt score some fans will say wants he doing? and start to get on Fonzie's back he's young and his chance will come when its right, that doesn't solve the problem that we need a goalscorer dont know who but I'm sure MON knows this and has his eye on someone and is prob waiting for the availability before he can make an offer.

I have to say that its something of a huge disappointment to me, that for whatever reason we have apparently decided to pass on an opportunity to bring in that much needed striker or two, that we so desperately need at the club, and at the present time are so sadly lacking. Another January transfer window wasted in my humble opinion, and it is abundantly clear that we as a club have failed to learn from our failings of January 2009, when new faces were needed to solidify a push for a top four finish. Without that penalty box predator, our hopes for the season are doomed to failure as points are regularly dropped, in games where despite holding the upper hand, we lack that killer touch to finish the opposition off. I am not penning these words as criticism against any of the 'strikers' currently at Brummagem B6, they all have important rioles to play, all have their attributes, but clinical finishers they most definitely are not. Yes, I daresay that the situation might be resolved come the summer, but sadly by then, yet again, we will have allowed a great opportunity to pass us by.
