5 Hours - No Goals - Petrov Has Faith

Stiliyan Petrov has told the official site that the goals will come.

As I've just been reminded by Vital member Lee Barnet, Villa haven't scored for five hours in the Premier League (according to MotD2 last night) but the Villa skipper says they'll keep on going for it:

'I think the only thing we've done wrong is not score a goal. We had the attitude, the concentration, we were looking really good and we just couldn't put it in the net. We put it in once but unfortunately it was offside. But you have games like that. We've got the attitude and we've got the players as well. We've got forwards and players who can score in any minute of the game and they get frustrated when goals don't go in.'

Adding, 'They kept trying and kept trying but unfortunately in the last few league games we haven't scored. We just need to dig in and keep going. Sometimes you will score three or four, then you pray that in one game you just have one.'

Interesting debate in our forum, if the big money isn't being splashed (by anyone by the way) in this transfer window and if the quality striker we so need (sadly as do most other teams!) isn't available, wouldn't the old link to James Beattie maybe start to make a bit more sense for cover? I know the arguments that this isn't progress but he does know where the goal is and would get stuck in + is ready and fit to play. What if - as they often do (not a criticism that!) Heskey or JC pick up an injury, all of a sudden we have problems? Or is it better to just go 4-5-1?

I have the solution to all our problems!! Haha!! James Beattie is not the worlds best striker (is he even Stokes??) BUT he has a tremendous record in terms making an immediate impact and scoring goals when he first moves clubs. So we want him for a short time!! We have two midfielders In Gardner and Reo-Coker who want games and (in the case of Gardner) we would rather not sell. How about we ring Stoke and suggest a loan swap to the end of the season Beattie for Gardner!! Everyones a winner!!

100% agree. 100% we all agree. This is just stating the bleeding obvious. But if it is so obvious why is nothing done about it? It is obvious we have no leader of the line in the Carew type sense, except for Carew himself who, unhapily for me, rather than cranking it up to become a more consistently fantastic leader of the line, has gone the other way. We also have no 6 yard box finisher in the Michael Owen, Gary Shaw mould. Thus we need to buy or try the youngsters (The Fonz). We have proof staring us in the face that despite all his undoubted good qualities Gabby is not ever going to become a clinical finisher. The Fonz might. We do not Know. Otherwise buy, or buy anyway we need a couple.

Beattie would be a good short term addition and may yet have his best form ahead of him -with the right medical staff and facilities. Other than that can anyone tell me which natural scorer would come to VP in January or seasons end? Look at Everton, snappng up Yakubu and Saha and they've done nowt! We all need to stop panicking and well done Deano for a quality suggestion.

YOU ARE WRONG. even leeds fans know beckfords s***. for crying out loud even leeds PLAYERS know beckfords s*** (so im told, and i have no reason to doubt my sources). please just accept, in this case, that you are wrong. If not i'd be happy with our overpaid over subscribed rank of midfielders playing 4-5-1 with gabby or delfounso up front on there tod or ..... Milner up front with Gabby and Heskey/Carew playing in the hole. Either way unless we get a goal poacher and i'm not sure there is one out there available, then 4-4-2 has to be ditched... Agreed???

4-5-1, which effectively becomes 4-2-4 when we are in possession with Ash, Milner, and DJ Stu all supporting Gabby and having the youthfullness and fitness to track back afterwards aswell. Carew for the last 20 mins.....

A silly question I know, but just throwing it out there ~ Does O'Neil (or most managers for that matter) really know more than the average fan, the difference seems to be to me that top managers just happened to be professional players, not all I know, but most!

In recent years we all know that our most successful period has been playing 451 with Gabby up front and before Mule turned up (bless him!) so why not go back to it as we all know, agree and especially now with a better midfield, to be fair know would work!!

Grrrrr I love football and Villa but it is sooooo frustrating, make us the fans manager, most of us agree, we'll come up with the teamsheet every week based on a democratic vote :-)

Can't see them going for Owen tvrwhitey, just purely because he was available for a good while before Man Utd popped in during the summer, if MON had wanted him, we could have got him then.
