An interview with Rossy from Vital West Ham
1) So, Zola promised so much but this season things seem to be falling apart. Is he still the man for the job?
I’d say most definitely! It would be madness to change now, Gianfranco is working with one of the smallest squads in the Premier League and has been hampered with a cruel run of injuries.
Matters have not been helped by the financial constraints he’s been forced to work under, very little money to buy and having to scour the bargain buckets of Europe just to invigorate the team.
If you add to that the constant rumours about having to sell one of his big names just to keep the club afloat it’s a miracle that he’s not gone grey and chucked the towel in.
Be warned, despite our perilous position we do play some good football, in periods!
2) Talk of new owners, what is the word on the street and do you all know which consortium you'd prefer, the Gold/Sullivan bandwagon or the other lot?!
This takeover bid scenario is getting weirder by the minute. Yesterday a new bid was reportedly being prepared by Massimo Cellino but it turns out he’s not even as fit and proper as those who’ve ruined Portsmouth.
Out of the other three bids, the one from the Air Asia geezer, Tony Fernandes, has yet to be seen whilst the others, Intermarket and the two from Birmingham City, sit pondering.
We just want the whole thing sorted out soon and some money be made available for Gianfranco to bolster the first team.
Is that too much to ask for?
3) Mixed and unsatisfying season so far I suppose, any positives to be taken?
It certainly has been a mixed season. A few more negatives than positives but let’s look on the bright side. We’ve had some young players come through in Zavon Hines and Junior Stanislas. Alessandro Diamanti has proven he’s got what it takes and Scott Parker has emerged as a midfield player of real class.
4) How are the injuries going, the list seems to have been endless for you?
The list is so long Gianfranco is fast writing name son the reverse of the sheet. Long term wise we’ve lost Dean Ashton (for good) Kieron Dyer, Callum Davenport and Luis Boa Morte seem to have season tickets for the sick bay and others namely Ilunga, Franco, Carlton Cole are still unavailable. Add to that that we lost Scott Parker and Matthew Upson and it weaves a sorry old tale. I reckon we’ll be sponsored by St John’s next season!
5) What are the hopes for the rest of the season and realistically, where should West Ham be aiming to finish each season?
We’ve only one thing to aim for after exiting both domestic cups, Premier League survival. It’d be fanciful to talk of a march up the table, we’re not kidding ourselves, it’s a battle to climb clear of the relegation zone and possibly celebrate just below mid-table. That is unless a mystery bidder comes in and sweeps our wonderful club of its feet with billions of pounds!
6) If you could have a couple of our players, who would they be and why?
A couple, the way our cookie is crumbling I’d like five or six. But being realistic and restricted to two, I’d take James Milner and Ashley Young, they’d give us that creative spark and that little something extra to open teams up. Something we’ve been lacking with all our injuries.
7) What do you think of Villa and our boss Martin O'Neill?
Apart from nicking our colours I suppose you’re not a bad lot. You’ve flirted with success (much like us) but fallen short more often than not. Whether Martin O’Neill is the man to take you to the next rung of that ladder I’ll reserve judgement on. Everywhere he’s been he seems to do well but whether he’d got what it takes to manage superstars, because that’s what you need to make that extra leap, I’m not sure.
8) Carlton Cole should go to the World Cup... discuss?!?!
If fit without a doubt! Gianfranco Zola seems to have awoken this sleeping giant and his goals have been a big part of our season. Besides, the list of those who are better is relatively short – Wayne Rooney! Possibly Jermaine Defoe but definitely not Peter Crouch or a faded Michael Owen. Darren Bent might edge him out though or Capello might go for that lad of yours, Agbonlahor – who can read his mind, I can’t!
9) We were robbed in your manor (!) what do you expect for this Sunday's stupid kick off time game?
You make it sound like Dick Turpin held you lot up, nicked your scarves and bobble hats and galloped off into the night. That was football, it happens to us all, more often to us than others though most supporters would chip in! Going to your place will be tough, we might need to pack the defence and midfield and hope for a piece of luck, but knowing our luck our old boys, Collins and Re-Coker, will feature and score! I’d be happy with a draw but ecstatic with a win!
With thanks to Rossy from www.westham.vitalfootball.co.uk
My two pennies worth will appear on Vital West Ham over the weekend, bet you can't wait!
