Who Of The Villa Squad Are Good Enough?

Ok, it is going to be a slowish news day and lets face it, most of you are trying to read this site through hangover affected eyes...! So, I thought I'd point out a great thread in the forum.

steff_the-villan asked simply, who of our current squad do you think are good enough to push on:

Forum thread with poll: Are they good enough? - Click Here

QUOTE from Heskey v JC thread: 'None of them are good enough if we are truthful and take off our C&B specs!'

Steff, who has been fighting the opti cause for some while now, retored with this thread and said the following:

In a freak accident in my youth involving radioactive / animals / chemicals / experimental weapon malfunction / intervention by alien species etc, my Claret and Blue goggles became permanently melded into my face, I accept that. Villans of Vital, who do you think out of our current regular team + bench is good enough to keep a spot in the regular playing squad?

So have a read, have a vote and let us know, who do you think we have in the team who are sorted and the grade and who do you think are not going to take Villa onwards and upwards. Makes for good reading I think!

Good debate and it's quite interesting that the voting is showing Vital Villans for the most part actually do agree on some things.

it is time to let heskey and carew go. for some time i have never seen anything in heskey except falling over ar the occasional goal. it hurts me to say this but MON has got the defence perfect but what we need now is a prolific midfield general and 2out and out strikers.so come on martinn lets make villa a prolific team in 2010

The question was actually meant to be are they good enough for a side who want top 4 as opposed to 6th

They are nearly all good enough. We are blessed with the talent we have. We are secure in goal, defence and midfield. We are just a top notch striker away from being a very, very good team. Now is the time to move on Gardner (although I always hoped this massive Villa fan would make it), Salifou, Harewood, Osbourne and Shorey. This should generate about 10 million in transfers and 5 million a year in wages. All of this and whatever extra funding can be found should go on a marque striker. Somebody to make the football world sit up and realise that Villa are about to join the party. However it will not happen in January imho. We should offload the other players now though, because January is a time when you can get maximum price for your players, as managers start to panic. However I would take Van Nistleroy as a short term measure. He was at Villa last week for look around, stopped in the Swallow Hotel on the Hagley Road before spending the day at Bodymoor Heath. Lets hope he liked what he saw.

agreed about van the man, got great affection for him, mainly because of my article a season or two ago linking him andsaying his wife had been seen looking around the boutiques of Aston! lol

I would take 18 months of Van Nistleroy. And it isn't a wind up about his trip to Villa last week.

oh I missed that bit about van the man in your post voice. You sure about that, good source etc? He could teach the 'kids' so much and would still knock the goals in for fun I'm sure. Also a very high profile name which then starts to put us on the map much like Chelsea did pre- Abramovich with the likes of vialli and the gent that is Zola.

ooops.. Brad Warnock Dunne Cuellar Collins Milner Young Gabby .. all good enough imo.. it really is the strikeforce we need to look at. Carew & Heskey have no consistency and Sidwell needs replacing.

Carew and Hesky are both plenty good enough as squad players, and if carew was more consistant then he'd do a job at any team, any level. He blows hot and cold, there's no telling what he'll do from one game to the next. I also don't think we'll ever make a signing that'll make the world sit up and take notice. Not because we won't spend, that might happen, but the world doesn't sit up and take notice of signings these days unless they're ridiculously big, and without winning things or huge sums of cash, neither of which has/will happen, then they just become another expensive signing. Spurs make expensive signings 3 times a year and I'm yet to sit up and take notice of them especially. The last 'biggy' that made people do this was Robinho, and we're not going to spend that sort of cash, yet alone pay those wages. In the mean time we're going to have to make do with just trying to up our level of quality accross the whole squad. Maybe Gardener will mature into a class act, maybe Gabby will make the step from being a decent enough player to one who's world class, likewise Milner and Young, but apart from that I can't see anybody in our squad being able to up their game substatially to mean we wouldn't need new faces if we were to get into the champions league. Maybe Davis as he gets a bit older?

I think a quality Centre Midfielder also. Milner has looked good there, but it is a role he needs adjusting to, plus there is the potential of him picking up an injury and we are back to no creativity again. I still think Gardner can have a role to play but he isn't getting the chance. Then again, I don't see him on the training pitch day in day out. Even though they are over 30, Danny Murphy or Jimmy Bullard could do a job...certainly offer us something a bit different to what we have in there
