'If It's Football, It's Vital'

Thursdays Aston Villa Press Transfer Talk

Several papers today including the Guardian and The Mail are claiming that Villa are in the chase along with Spurs and Liverpool to sign 29-year-old West Ham midfielder Scott Parker.

The Guardian say that O'Neill wants a 'real' holding player and see's Parker as the man to take the role currently undertaken by Stiliyan Petrov who as many will know, used to be more of an attacking midfielder whilst at Celtic. The Mail say that Parker isn't adverse to moving out of London but does appear to favour remaining in the Capital.

The Guardian also claim that Fulham are interested in Nigel Reo-Coker but say that Villa will want a replacement in first.

The Daily Mail repeat yesterday's links for Craig Gardner to Wolves or Blues. (see: Craig Gardner In Transfer Tug Of War?)

The Daily Mail also claim Villa and Manchester City both want 18-year-old West Bromwich Albion defender Paul Downing.

There is also still some talk that Villa are after former Liverpool and Blues winger Jermaine Pennant despite Villa distancing themselves from the report a few weeks ago.

parker is better than reo-coker imo but will MON pay out that sort of money for a 29 year old with a temper? would be a decent signing though

Parker, Petrov, Sidwell, Gardner, Reo-Coker......all as good as each other!!! The midfield of Milner, Downing and Young needs a top quality 'hard man' enforcer type, of which there are very few about....how about we send our scouts out for a bit and have a look across Europe.....or is that too much to ask!!!

We dont need a defensive midfielder, we need a striker who can also play on the wing!

In both the Arsenal and Liverpool game you could see one major issue with our team, and that is we have no stella performer, no world class star, we have a solid defence and a lot of 'nearly men' in midfield. Our most world class performer this season has been Milner and whilst it was a stroke of genius moving him infield - it doesn't disguise the fact we don't have anyone who can really turn on the class and win us a game. I had high hopes for Downing but i think he will grow in time, Ash shows small flashes of class but nothing anywhere near consistent. Carew is as many say an enigma and Gabby spends most of the games going it alone. We don't need a midfield enforcer we need someone with a bit of creative class who can change a game, an Arshavin/Modric type. We've not had that sort of player since the days of Merson, Carbone, Houghton etc. We seem to have a swathe of players who can player the allround midfielder - without excelling in anything particularly. I agree though Petrov is waisted as the holding midfielder. Parker would be a good signing - but I would prefer we spent the money on a new striker - if we could only find one!

Maybe we could advertise. No. 9 wanted, Must be able to score goals, Please contact Mr O'Neil, Villa Park, None of this all round crap, just goals. Good rate of pay. Potential for travel if all goes well.

Totally agree.. Striker is seriously wanted but I think a creative/world class midfielder will be more effective. I think our strikers look average as the supply up to them is woeful sometimes.
