'If It's Football, It's Vital'

Furious? Just a bit.

Think I've calmed down enough to write this but I'm not making any promises.

I can try and sugar coat it as much as I like but I just can`t hide how furious I am about tonight`s loss. Against Arsenal we witnessed a master-show from Fabregas that showed us the true meaning of a world-class player.

Tonight though was a completely different story.

Liverpool were there for the taking.

Both teams played some equally drab football and you might want to blame the conditions but correct me if I`m wrong but I`m pretty sure both teams had to compete under the same conditions?

We were at home and had, pre-Arsenal, been playing some good football. The suspension of Ashley Young seemed to send most of us pre-match into a frenzy, panicking that we would lose the shape of the team that has proved so successful.

And so it was to be.

James Milner was shifted back out to the right and Nigel Reo-Coker was installed to the centre to try and shackle the creative force of Gerrard and Aquilani.

Fair to say, it worked.

NRC did have a good game and did himself no disservice. But to play with two players like him and Stan Petrov we have absolutely zero creativity of our own in the middle resulting in the famous hoof ball football that we all know and love.

With Milner in the middle we have an attack minded player that can do a defensive shift and is always looking for that insightful ball into the strikers. With Heskey up front (Ok, he may spend most of the time on the floor) But at least he keeps possession.

carew

I`m beginning to detest John Carew every time I see him play lately. His aimless flick-ons are everything that is wrong with Aston Villa.

How many times tonight did we hoof the ball past our non-creative centre midfield, for Carew to flick on and just lose possession?

I lost count!

There`s no need for it.

If we kept the ball better with players like Milner & Downing in the centre of midfield and slowly built up our possession would be much higher and would result in much, MUCH more chances than what the ridiculous long ball provides.

Carew could be world class but his inconsistency and fondness of the flick on are of absolutely no use to us. I struggle to remember any times that it`s paid off.

The only plus to take out of the match was the introduction of Marc Albrighton.

I was expecting a straight swap, NRC for Steve Sidwell, but instead O`Neill bought on Albrighton, taking up the right flank and allowing Milner to move back into the middle.

Good, some creativity in the middle.

Then he takes off Downing for Sidwell, slotting into the middle and moving Milner to the left.

Now we`ve no creativity again.

It`s baffling.

If Martin O`Neill is so adamant to play Carew then he should make it punishable by death to play the long ball to him.

If he was always going to play Albrighton then why not play him from the start? All this talk of him "not being ready is garbage." Him starting on the right would have allowed us to keep the shape that has served so well the last few weeks and if it didn`t work, then at least he can say he gave it a crack and went for the win.

You can`t tell me we went for the win tonight?

Tonight`s performance was based on a sturdy defence, a gritty centre midfield pairing and a long ball up front.

If we didn`t play that long ball then Carew wouldn`t have to be the one to get on the end of it and would be able to take up a better position where the likes of Milner & Downing can feed him the ball to actually do something with.

In the end that sturdy defence slipped up and it cost us at the very least a draw. A draw from tonight`s game would have been the last excuse for the performance. But you can`t defend and defend and expect to not slip up once. Ultimately we did and Torres was given room to angle a shot past Friedel.

I`m not interested in the philosophy that we were beaten by a world-class striker. If the shape of the team had been set up in a way that we had some creativity, then perhaps by this point we could already have turned some of those useless flick-ons into real chances and already been 2-0 up?

We always knew that we would have to score at least 2, as Torres was always good for a goal.

In the end because of hoof ball we didn`t get any. Again!

If I were the manager, I would have played Milner in the middle with Albrighton on the right. Or if he wasn`t sure of Albrighton, then Milner on the right, and Delph in the middle.

Either way could have given us something in the middle of the park with Stan Petrov to mop up.

The talk that the kids aren`t ready is utter garbage. Anything would have been better than the long ball football that we had to witness.

All old football clichés aside, defences do not win football games.

As long as O`Neill sets us up in this way I have no confidence that we will break the top four. I`d rather take the philosophy of Manchester City and Tottenham and concede a few goals, yes, but make sure we give a damn good go of scoring a few of our own.

As individuals our defenders are brilliant players anyway so they would surely do a better a job than our their four contender counterparts.

Which brings me to Gabby Agbonlahor.

He has the vision of a mole rat.

When he had that chance to put us 1-0 up he didn`t even look to see where the goal was and fired the ball straight at Reina. He`s a good player and shown he can score goals already this season, but a first choice striker he is not.

He needs to be playing off another striker where he can use his sharp instincts rather than his non-existent footballing brain.

And Sidwell?

I loathe him.

He provides nothing to the team and if anything is more of a hindrance by just merely taking the place of someone else who can be on the field.

I don`t expect to come up against the top four and expect wins in every game, but this was a very winnable game. Liverpool were far from their best and we failed to take advantage due to the loss of just one player meaning we had to change the complete shape of a simple 4-4-2.

That`s not depth at all.

We have defensive depth yes, but if you take any of Milner, Downing, Young, Gabby or Heskey out of the team then I`m just not confident.

For those of you that read anything I write (firstly you deserve a medal), secondly you`ll know I always end with optimism.

This isn`t the end of our challenge and it`s by no means a disaster.

But tonight we failed to take a chance and that is unfortunately the bottom line.

I would get rid of Carew & Sidwell in a heartbeat. They are good players but they do not help us with our set up in the slightest. They could have a much better career at another club.

Tottenham, Liverpool and Man City will all drop points in the next 18 games.

Of course they will.

To think they won`t is absurd.

We now need to put ourselves back in the position to capitalise on their mistakes. They will all be looking to strengthen in January so that`s exactly what we need to be doing.

I know O`Neill has said he isn`t actively looking, but we desperately need a striker (two if he sees the light and ships out Carew), and another creative mid.

We don`t need defenders.

They are brilliant and are a match for any team in the country.

The players we do need however are not available in English football at the moment. We missed a trick by not signing Bent. I would take Scott Parker now but for anything else Martin O`Neill is going to have to look abroad for us to improve the team without breaking the bank.

Doubt he will do it though.

Regardless, with the team that has been playing brilliantly lately, we will win the cup.

I`m sure of it.

The league though, you need a squad that handle the loss of one player and still maintain what has made them successful.

Tonight we didn`t.

Bit of a harsh analysis I felt...It was a tight game and I dont think anyone tonight could see many goals being scored...At times we defend too deep, I agree that, we win the ball back and none of our midfield burst forward, the oppo wins it and immediately they are busting a gut to get forward...But, credit where it is due, we kept them to lonng range shots, we never looked like conceding...Down the other end we created 3 chances where you would EXPECT us to score, Liverpool never created one of those...Downing, Carew and Gabby should all have found the net...Only real chance Liverpool made was a slip, then a double ricochet that happened to fall to torres inside the area in acres of space........Champions League dreams look shot now, some people will say keep your chin up, I can understand that, but we have been here before, hard to see a way back...But to blame it on a poor performance I dont agree with...It was pure luck, nothing more or less...I feel as though I have just had my pocket aces busted at the poker table...IT WAS A BAD-BEAT!

I'm not saying it was a poor perfomance. For the team that was out there, in the positions they were in and the limitations to their play, it was in fact a good performance. What I was trying to say is that if tonights team is anything to go by then we need some drastic changes.

TergeHauge - I would be embarrassed to go to another teams site and rub their noses in it after fluking a win like that...You have come to Villa Park in the past and played us off the park and I have got on the train with scousers and sat and took the ribbing like a good sport and merely acknowledged that the better team won...Even the most reddest of red scouser couldnt claim they deserved that tonight, infact most of them are probably happy to put their heads down, keep their mouths shut, take the 3 points and go home!

Fair point Jay, but I felt we didnt do that badly, in an inevitably tight game we created 3 of the best chances we will have in any game this season...We should have won this game, not drawn, or lost...We created enough to take all 3...I too am as gutted as you mate...Just think we need to take it on the chin as pure bad look and TRY not to look for people to blame...tough I know

that is unfortunatley what teams like Liverpool do, they are having a rubbish season and it will continue but their old fighting character will pop up from time to time.
arthur7171
The goal was bad luck yeah but the set up of the team to play long ball football when we've already found a winning formula, is not. That was tactical.

Steven Gerrard is on SSN right now saying Liverpool played well tonight...if that is playing well then they have major major problems...They were restricted to long range shooting all night, it took a slip, then a double ricochet to land in the 1 place that mattered for them to score...they should have been beaten comfortably...If thats playing well Steven then I wish you luck for the rest of the season, YOU WILL NEED IT!

To be fair he is pretty good in the air too, but he can't play with another striker, only option for Gabby is in a 4-5-1 and we play counter attacking football, which i think with downing a.young and milner would suit us better, or we find two strikers who can play together if we must persist with 4-4-2

I do agree Jay, i was yelling myself every time we humped it(which was a lot)...But look at it this way...If he played Albrighton, and we still lost, people would have killed him for not playing Reo Coker against 2 world class attacking midfielders Liverpool had....Also, how would Nige have reacted if he would have chosen a kid above him...I do agree though, way too many long balls, not enough support from midfield...But even given that, we deserved better!

That's up to the manager, not us. He should be picking a team that is best suited to picking up the points. Tonights selection wasn't that. I do like Reo-Coker and I would personally play him over Petrov but obviously as captain, that just won't happen.

A suggestion for a poll could be, which of our players, if the ball dropped to them like it did Torres, would you 'hand on heart' fully be expecting to finish, 'none' will need to be an option, i'm mean really, who at the club is a 'natural' finisher, and i'm not just talking about Torres. Keane, Defoe, Rooney, Gerrard, Van Persie, Fabregas, Adebeyor, Owen, Bent to name but a few, if the chance fell to these players you would be genuinely suprised if they missed, when a chance falls to any of our players, i wince as i expect them to pull it wide or miss hit it or fire straight at the keeper, i am suprised when they do score rather than miss, we've had players in the past who i'd expect to score, Gray, Shaw, Platt, Saunders, Yorke. We need a proper Aston Villa no. 9 and until we get that we have no chance of making the top 4

I love the Liverpool fans mentality. I mean, I love our AMERICAN owner. What is wrong with American owners? He has put his hand in his pocket & let O'Neill buy practically anyone he has wanted. So I can't fault American owners. For a club the size of Liverpool, clinching 4th, YES, 4th spot should be minimum of a season, MINIMUM NOT THE ULTIMATE of a season. I thought Aquilani was the final piece in the Liverpool jigsaw (Yes, I remember Carragher & Gerrard's pre-season predictions.) I truly believe we will finish 3rd this season. Above Liverpool is a given, but who else I'm not too sure, probably whoever doesn't spend in January. I have all the faith in our players (Except Dick H. Dunne & Heskey of course) that they are good enough to achieve this without signing anyone. Add a possible League Cup win & good FA Cup run & this should be a good season for Villa, regardless of this upset by the penniless 4th Place seekers. KEEP THE FAITH. UTV.

It's a harsh summary of the match. Yes it was not great but to say you'd ship out Carew is just nuts. Although he isn't having a great time of it at the moment he is quality player. Yes his application could do with some work as well but to say 'ship him out' is like the same knee jerk reaction we get from the press when we win a few games and all of a sudden we are favourites to qualify for the champions league; we are not. To be honest I don't think the top four will be any different at the end of the season unless MON invests in the squad in Jan. Last season Arsenal were vunerable, we didn't invest in Jan and we fell away. This season it is Liverpool and the same will probably happen as we all know MON's reluctance to spend money (up until 4:30pm on deadline day anyway). Lets be honest the current squad will struggle to stay in the top four because of reasons already voiced here (not enough goals & lack of creativity). Ashley Youngs form is the one that concerns me most as he seems to prefer going to ground than having a shot on goal and looks a shadow of the player we saw in the first half of last season. I think another striker is a necessity as is a creative midfielder (I'd go for Danny Murphy at Fulham; bags of experience and can pick a pass). Also this is not the end of the world. I'm sure if we win the next four league games (which is realistic) the press will have us down as championship contenders... Happy new year and UTV!!!!

its still wide open. I have to say that Villa's is the weakest squad out of the contenders though...actually no thats still liverpool. Once again their season rests on Torres' hamstrings. If its not spurs in 4th I hope its villa rather than city/liverpool. Pool dont deserve it and I dont like city.

BobbyNorman - It's no knee jerk reaction on my part to say ship Carew out. He is a consistent underperformer that could potentially be a fantastic player. He just doesn't turn it on enough and his flick ons will be the death of me I'm sure. They do nothing for the team and when he's flicking on there's only ever Gabby and at least two/three defenders, so how often is Gabby ever going to get to that ball? Play it to his feet in a decent position and could be dangerous. I'm just fed up with him and past caring if he will ever come good.

Where did the ref get only 4 minutes of injury time from?? I think he must have forgotten about Reina wasting 2-3 minutes waiting for new boots & then putting on his gloves again. Not saying it would have made a difference but you never know. Spuds are up at Anfield next so you have every chance of getting fourth spot back again.

HAHA, love it Steff...3 great chances and a nailed on penalty...Yep, they were more than lucky...Its a shame though because that could really damage us now...our next 6 games look daunting in the league

We tried to win the match at the end, would have hated to have lost packing eleven men behind the ball.Very proud of the team and manager. How were the crowd at the end? From what I thought I could hear the Holte were magnificant after the goal.Could be very important after last season.

We were magnificent in the North too, Pking : ) We stood behind them till the whistle, then trudged out utterly deflated at the cruel end to a match we should have taken three points from, **** happens!

carew worked hard last night. he tracked back and you could see he was up for the game so that critisism in unneeded. I do agree with the the fact that we had a lack of creativity though. Having said that it was the linup i would have chosen. as for the long ball buissiness i completely agree. We are a decent team and shouldnt have to play drab football, we have the quality to do better. another striker and a creative midfielder are desperately needed in jan but u just knw we arent going to get anybody

As if villa had been playing good football before last night. It is long ball stuff all season lonb. That i Villas stregths. How many goals have Villa actualy scored ffom open play. Im not knocking villas style. I admire any football that gets the maximum results and thats just about what villa have done. I have always said this year Villa are not good enough for top 4. I think Citeh will do it but Spurs have a goo chance.

Makes me laugh. You beat us 3-1 at Anfield and it has been re-written as a rout. MON said you should have been out of sight last night, Arf!. The same applied at Anfield where we carved out better chances than you did last night (and more of them) prior to you taking the lead from an OG. Some of you lot need to lose with a little more grace. Starting with your manager.

Thought I'd be a lot calmer waking up today but no such luck. Reading this back I think I was fair. Critical yeah but it was at least constructive. Not bothered if I did give their fans something to laugh about, they were lucky and they know it. I'm confused as to how nobody else is appalled that just the missing Young (who has been out of sorts this year anyway) could mean we had to change the whole dynamic of play. Point to the three chances all you want but if Carew didn't flick everything on to no one then those three could have 6 or more. Top teams have to be able to afford to miss 3 chances and still who the game. All I did was point out the weaknesses in our otherwise very good team. Doesn't make it any less true.

KNOB1 It was a rout, villa taught liverpoo a lesson that day, I was there! Like it or lump it Liverpoo are a shadow of the teams of the past, and no matter what drivel you spout Your lot are in the ****, Top 4 is a financial must, for us it is a bonus, villa have improved steadily since O'neil took over, liverpoo are in decline, if villa dont get top 4 then citeh or spuds will. this season could be the financial death of your lot. cant wait to get on the pooblog WHEN it happens.

Last night was one of those games. My car wouldn't start (Managed it eventually), got to my seat in the lower North and somebody else had the same seat. Stewards eventually sorted it and I marched around the pitch to a seat 5 rows back on the halfway line in the Doug Ellis (not a bad swap - but got snowed on all night). Only good thing was car started when I got back to it. We should have won. Had three decent chances and Liverpool were poor. Defence was solid as usual, but midfield were missed out by the long ball. The conditions didn't help us - I know it's same for both teams, but snow held the ball up and didn't allow us to run at them even if we had the inclination - which wasn't often. I'm not obsessed with 4-5-1, but I tink it would really have suited us last night. Gabby up front, Downing left, Allbrighton right, with Stan, Millner and NRC in the centre. I think that would have allowed us to get at them more. Now's the time to regroup, rest a few on Saturday and then get two away wins at Blackburn and Wigan. It's not the end of the World. Come on you Villa Boys!!

Some hilarious revisionist history going on here. Villa didn't rout Liverpool at Anfield, we should've scored two goals in the first ten minutes of that game, and we also hit the post and your goalkeeper had to make several key saves, not just two. Villa Hardly created a chance all game, your first goal was an own goal from a set piece, and your second came from a corner that wasn't, and the third goal was a penalty. You didn't create any chance from open play and were lucky as Liverpool wasted several chances to score. By the way, the nailed on penalty claim was ours, Kuyt should've had a penalty in the first half when Dunne upended him in the area, funny that none of you mentions this when you complain about the ref.

V Harsh Jay, if we had nicked it at the end instead of the scousers, then the article would be TOTALLY different!!

Nope. I was more frustrated with the play than the result. I get that sometimes things like that go against you but there was no excuse for the hoof ball.

Hey, guys, it's just one loss. You've got another 20-ish games to get back into the top four. If you crack up after one hoofing long ball game, pity us, we've been slamming it up to Crouch for months :P But seriously, best of luck for the rest of the season.
