He`s become something of a forgotten man of late. The fantastic performances of the defence this season has meant that Davies has hardly been missed (if at all).
Davies played through the pain barrier at the start of the season when he aggravated the shoulder, first dislocated whilst at West Brom. Surgery was known to be needed to correct the injury but with a shortage of centre-backs at the club, he played on allowing Martin O`Neill the time to bring in the marvellous signings of Richard Dunne & James Collins.
But now after having the shoulder pinned, the defender has been given the go ahead from medical experts to participate in some light training.
Reports from the Mirror`s James Nursey claims that Davies could be back in contention for first team action come January 1st. But he faces a massive battle to reclaim his first team spot after the partnerships of Dunne & Collins, and now Dunne & Cuellar, have been absolutely top notch.
As we know, Curtis has played 58 games for the club and has a clause in his contract stipulating the renegotiation of terms once he hits 60.
If Collins faces a battle to take his place back from Cuellar in the centre, than Davies will have to declare war to dislodge two of the three for one of the centre back slots.
Such competition for places from such quality can only be great news for the club and is sure to give O`Neill a massive selection headache.
Rather him than me if I`m honest.
Lets just hope that Davies can meet the challenge head on and rediscover his form. If he can manage to worm his way back into the first team past the calibre of centre backs we already have, then he will have earned his new contract the hard way, surely?![]()
