John Carew Making A Turkey Of Himself?
Here we go, a bit of gossip!
The Mirror have a report by Alan Nixon today suggesting that John Carew is a target for Turkish giants Fenerbahce.
The report says they will bid around £5million for the 30-year-old.
Big John, a hero to some and a lazy waste of talent all but 1 in 10 games to others, has just 18 months left on the current contract.
The report then goes WAY off what I think is the truth. For one, there is no way Villa have to sell him to balance the books and I'm not 100% sure just how 'worried' MON would be to lose a player who he has admitted at a recent forum only plays 1 in 7 and baffles him as to why he is such a cult hero for some.
Something to do with a great song and the fact he waves maybe? Something to do with the fact on the 1 in 10 (or 7 or 5 or whatever you think) he is world class - for me that just makes it all the more unforgiveable that he goes missing so often. He should be an over 20 goals a season striker but has instead drifted from club to club.
It doesn't seem likely that Villa will offer him improved or extended terms, not with his injury record and perhaps his lack of application? If he was as good as some say, how come he keeps ending up on the bench? As said, I know on his day this player is outstanding, is that any good to a manager when he is a passenger for so much of the time? However how could Villa realistically replace him in January? There aren't many clubs who will sell a quality striker at Christmas and if Emile Heskey picks up an injury, which to be fair is something that regularly happens through his career, or even worse if Gabby Agbonlahor has to have time out of the team, what are our alternatives. Would MON consider Nathan Delfouneso ready? Or would we maybe look to return to the 4 5 1 where we have always looked fairly solid?
Difficult to see us selling him in January without a replacement in mind surely? Then again, £5m for a journeyman isn't bad? Or is it £5m for a world class striker, then it is bad. The choice on that is a flip of the coin for many.
Personally, after the Ajax incident, not to mention not fronting up for Moscow away, he'd never have been back in the team for me. What an nasty unforgiving person I am! Hey, Ron Saunders would have done the same, you don't mess with Aston Villa and if you do, you should have your bags packed for you.

Oh and in another bit of transfer talk, another report in the Mirror says that Celtic are after Spurs striker Robbie Keane on loan in January. There you go, mention those two teams in an article and you have just increased your page impressions dramatically! Alternatively, if true, what better replacement for Carew?!?!?!

I think Carew could be sold in January, not sure that Fenerbahce would want him back though! I don't think O'Neill will play Delfouneso he seems unwilling to give young raw talent a go. Gabby is the only player through the youth set up who is now a regular in our side. If we sell Carew we need other options that is for sure, don't think Gabby is all that, but like him or not its plain to see that if Gabby picks up an injury we are going to struggle to replace him with the current bunch of strikers we have, unless Young is moved up front now we have an extra winger in Downing.

He wont be sold unless we have a january deal lined up for Jovanovic. Carew leaving us looks more likely in the summer to be honest.

...and yes Carew should be worth more than £5m, but his problems off the pitch seriously devalue him as a player. He is a 'Diva' and serious high maintenance off the pitch. Enough said.

15 goals last season from the big man and many assists. why is everyone on his back? I actually think he makes a massive inmpact on games and Im a fan of his game not his nature on or off the pitch

I have no patience for players like him that only turn up when they want, he should be on more than Drogba, he should be that good but he drifts and is high maintenance. When he's good he's fabulous. Doesn't happen often enough. We need strikers who can score goals, at the moment we've got 2 that don't score enough, and Gabby who's way better than both Emile and Big John, but needs quality replacements for those two to give him competition and keep him focused. More strikers plz.

He's a tricky one Carew, could be brilliant you just quite see the application. If he is to go in January we must must must have a replacement already in but I have no idea who that would be

Major blow if we lost JC in January. We don't need to sell, so I can't see it happening. In the summer, yes, but hopefully with a Champions League place we will replace him with David Villa or someone like that! I know I am dreaming, but that's what the game is about. Take away the dreams, you take away the game.

I am with Lee Lindsay on this one. I like the big man and want him to stay at VP. His league goals per game last season was exactly the same as Torres. But some people would have you believe that Torres scores every time Redscouse play. It is often about perceptions. Clever marketing would have you perceive that Torres is a world superstar and that JC is occasionally OK. However the truth is somewhat different. They have roughly the same goals per game ratio over their respective careers (Torres has a slight edge but it is minimal). I think it is a sign of how far we have come in that we are even debating this topic. We now have a great squad of mobile, mostly young and exciting talent. What we do lack though is a superstar up front. If we break in to the top 4 then this could be addressed. Until then I am more than happy with 'bigger than me and you'.

Couldn't he buy himself out of his current contract in Jan anyway??? Can't see him wanting to go to Turkey as the standard is poor and Norway aren't in the World cup anyway. He might only like playing in nice sunny weather though??????

mighty atom you are right, these 'marketing gurus' had you fooled the same as everybody else. Carew has started 70 league games for Villa and 13 as sub, scoring 30 goals. That is an average of 2.33 games for every goal. Over his whole career he has started 224 league games and made 53 sub appearances scoring 107 goals. An average of 2.09 games for every goal. Torres has had a good start to this season for Redscouse with 10 goals in 10 games. Since joining them he has scored 48 goals from 59 starts and 8 sub appearances. An impressive return of 1.22 games for every goal. However it is worth noting that when he does play he is the total focus of their attack. He doesn't play second fiddle to any one. However his overall career goals per starts isn't as good as Carews. He has started 270 league games and 9 as sub scoring 130 goals. This is 2.14 starts per goal in comparison to Carews 2.09. This despite his excellent record at Redscouse. As for European football Torres has scored 10 goals from 24 starts (2.40 games per goal). Slightly better than Carews 24 from 65 starts (2.71 games per goal). So yes, you have been as fooled by the marketing gurus as everybody else!!
