Dwight Yorke On 'Beloved' Villa

There is a report in the Sunday Mercury today by Mat Kendrick with quotes from Dwight Yorke

Full report: www.sundaymercury.net/midlands-sport/aston-villa-fc

I know this will get slated by many but I have to admit, I still remember the great times and blank out the way it all ended. Sad thing is if he had stayed, we might have won the blinking league that year but as hard as it is to stay, his decision to move was vindicated, he did win everything with Man Utd. I know the kissing the badge to the Villa fans was a bad thing but then again, wasn't the abuse he received through the game?!

Anyway, I still remember the Yorkie with a wide smile on his face and the great goals - that penalty (when he just chipped it) alone was just fantastic!

Anyway, in the report he explains the conflict of whether to move or not and also says he was offered a fantastic package at Villa to stay as he felt a sense of loyalty to the Villa.

'I was in that meeting [with Doug and JG offering him a 1m signing fee to stay], listening to this offer and thinking: ‘Can I really walk away from this?’ So why did I? Deep down, I was torn between dedicating the best years of my career to the club I owed so much and taking a chance of even greater things a hundred miles up the road.'

And on 'that' game v Everton where Yorke looked like he was just strolling around with no interest at all: 'There was time for me to play what would be my last match for Villa, the opening game of the new season for Everton, and I think that must have been my worst performance for the club since I arrived. It was not through any deliberate policy on my part. It never would be. I know Villa fans have always accused me of ‘playing to get away’ that day but there was so much going on by then, so many distractions, that it was hard to focus on the game – anyone who has been in that position will tell you the same.'

He says at the end he had thought he'd be at Villa for life. I wish.. such a shame. Ho hum!

* Dwight Yorke: Born to Score is published by Macmillan and is on sale priced 17.99.

I've never been so upset at the departure of a player. I was glad he went on to win the Champions League with Utd though.

he was also praising us on football focus yesterday as was southgate

I never held it against him for moving, but when he kissed that badge in front of the Holte End, it was the end of any legend status, he would now have.

Many many happy memories of him. I really was in a terrible mood all day the day he left. And the kissing the badge stunt was poor taste on his part. BUT, as you say, you do only have to look back and remember that penalty and it all comes flooding back... he was such a fantastic player ... so many smiles he brought to my face over the years.

Nevermind Dwight, I used to love JG. When I was young I wrote to him & the guy got the whole squad to sign a poster for me. Loved his outbursts (the 1 above 1 of my favourites) Did ol' JG set up a seperate bank account for his fines? ANYWAY, back to Dwight ...

To leave Villa and then go onto greater things that he wanted to achieve and in doing so he has vidicated himself. Apart from the badge incident and no show vs Everton I felt he was our best player in that decade. Goal of the month often included one of his finest. Yep I agree if he had stayed then we could have won league but now we'll never know. Is he our biggest fee received??

Still my all time favourite Villa Player, wish he had stayed but he did what was right for his career and although i think his career went downhill after Man Utd, he did win stuff at Old Trafford. Just wish we had a striker with half his ability now.

A great of my generation, i grew up watching Atkinson and Saunders then was treated to all the years of Dwight - can't fault him for moved to Utd and winning serious trophies - also back then we did get a pretty solid transfer fee.

He was a Villa great, the badge kissing removed any chance at legendary status for me, but still remember what he gave us, so many memorable games.

Great player and some good times, but cut the crap. He couldn't wait to go to Manchester and he showed no loyalty to the Villa. Don't blame him for going and winning all that he did but dont pretend he considered the Villa. Maybe it's a case of him thinking about it now and realising how selfish he was!!!!

If I remember correctly in a documentary I saw that Yorkie went to Graham Taylor for advice about the move. He wanted some fatherly advice and GT was his father fugure (unlike DE who thought every footballer was like a son to him!!).Funny how us fans have the right to dish the dirt and the only way a footballer can do anything back is by scoring a goal or celebrating the way he did - kiss badge!. In all my years (over 46) of being a Villa fan I will always remember the guy for the good thing he did and forgive (if not forget) the only indescretion. And yes if you have so much going on around you you do sometimes fail to perform. goes for all walks of life. If you are going through a divorce (as I have done in the past) it does affect the way you think and what you do.

I never held it against him going to Utd. What *****ed me off was when he signed for Blues he stated he was signing for the biggest club in the midlands!
