Oh no, Sidwell wants to take penalties.
Steve Sidwell yesterday claimed that he is happy to put himself forward to take penalties following Villa`s less then impressive record this season.
He told the Birmingham Mail: "Whether it`s in a shoot-out or in a game where the regular penalty taker isn`t there, I will always step up and take one."
In this case, let`s hope that the regular penalty taker is ALWAYS there.
He went on to say: "I would rather have the courage to take one and not score, rather than regret not taking one. There were times when I was a kid when I didn`t put my hand up to take a penalty and afterwards I always wished I had."
I can just see it now… Aston Villa in the Carling Cup final, 0-0 after extra time, up steps Steve Sidwell for the deciding penalty. HE`S MISSED! Sidwell puts it way, way over the bar.
Lest we forget the Peace Cup final when his penalty shootout miss could have proven more costly if not for the heroics of Brad Guzan. When I think back to the match against Bolton, I still shudder when I think how he missed that absolute sitter following Milner`s penalty miss.
Well if he can`t get it in the net first time of asking, and he can`t get it in the net second time of asking, then I hope that if he does "put his hand up" the rest of the team just pretend he isn`t there - much like when he`s playing for the first team.
