'If It's Football, It's Vital'

Oh no, Sidwell wants to take penalties.

Steve Sidwell yesterday claimed that he is happy to put himself forward to take penalties following Villa`s less then impressive record this season.

He told the Birmingham Mail: "Whether it`s in a shoot-out or in a game where the regular penalty taker isn`t there, I will always step up and take one."

In this case, let`s hope that the regular penalty taker is ALWAYS there.

He went on to say: "I would rather have the courage to take one and not score, rather than regret not taking one. There were times when I was a kid when I didn`t put my hand up to take a penalty and afterwards I always wished I had."

I can just see it now… Aston Villa in the Carling Cup final, 0-0 after extra time, up steps Steve Sidwell for the deciding penalty. HE`S MISSED! Sidwell puts it way, way over the bar.

Lest we forget the Peace Cup final when his penalty shootout miss could have proven more costly if not for the heroics of Brad Guzan. When I think back to the match against Bolton, I still shudder when I think how he missed that absolute sitter following Milner`s penalty miss.

Well if he can`t get it in the net first time of asking, and he can`t get it in the net second time of asking, then I hope that if he does "put his hand up" the rest of the team just pretend he isn`t there - much like when he`s playing for the first team.

A little harsh. He can certainly thump a ball. How much control he has is another story I guess.

Can never understand why strikers don't take the penalties, scoring is their job isn't it? Not sure re: Sidwell taking them but at least he is willing to step up I guess. Still think Milner (if our strikers can't be bothered... arrgghhh) should be the regular taker.

I just don't understand him. He has all the oppurtunity at Villa to be the Steve Sidwell that Chelsea signed. In his Reading days he looked a real player so I understand the logic of O'Neill signing him, but he just doesn't shine in a Villa shirt as often as he should. The same can be said for Carew but at least when he has an on-day, he looks world class. Unfortunatley Sidwell doesn't and I've just lost all faith in him. On my way to the game now and I've got that warm fuzzy feeling that makes me know it's gonna be a good'un.

Not so sure how many games he will start if Monny wants to play Stu, Ash & Milly....especially as Stan is capt so will defo be a starter....(I actually think Stan would be a good pen taker)!!Also have to agree with Fear in why do the strikers not take them...Would top goal tally for the season up & adds to the confidence however you score...also keeps your name in lights!!!

Not a fan of Sidwell I take it Jay. Personally I believe that he's a quality player that just doesn't suit our set-up. It's a shame really as he is a quality player but apparently not good enough to adapt his style to our brand of hoofball.

i've always effing backed Carew for our penalties, ever since the one against Newcastle. i assumed he'd take the one against bolton, though they all seemed to want it at the time. glad he took it today though, class penalty :)

Not exactly VOTN. I'm not doubting his talent but with no disrespect to Reading, this is his second chance at a bigger club and he has failed to make an impact. Fair enough he didn't get many chances at Chelsea and has had a few injury problems here but if he was gonna make it at Villa we would of seen it by now. He's damaging his own reputation with us and should just accept he's not a TOP player and go back to teams like Reading and shine. If he can get back to what made people pay attention in the first place then he will earn another chance at the bigger teams. For now though, I think his confidence has taken a massive battering and is proving too much.

If Big John keeps blasting them down the middle, then there wont be a problem. Good to have options. The way this season is going (Peace Cup, Sunderland), we will need all the spot kick takers we can get. I can see the Carling Cup final now as Barry has his pen saved by Guzan and Dunne puts his high into the roof of the net..............mmm

I don't like him, look at the difference with Downing, he has just come back from an injury, he isnt fully fit and he is playing really well. Sidwell is just trying to punch above hes weight and it isn't happening for him. We should cut our losses and get rid, i would put Craig Garnder ahead of him and i believe he should be. Reo Coker should stay because he gives us another option and everytime he is on the pitch he puts in a 100% and is a bone cruncher in the centre.
