Why Sing The Blues - Support Villa!

Ok, so here we go. Topic of the day!

I had a poll suggestion from GMVillan not long back - now live - asking if the Holte End spend too much time singing about Blues or not?

My personal feeling is they don't exist unless they are on the pitch playing us, why spend so much time singing about our 'cousins' across the City when we have a fine team of our own to sing about and support? That isn't a knock to them to be honest, just I want to sing about my team, not some local rival who apart from during the local derby, really shouldn't matter to us at all?

Maybe one song, as the my old man song does contain Villa heroes in it, but apart from that, why should we be singing about them? How would that in any way help our players or motivate/help them during a game?

Opinions and poll votes required (by Vital law) I thank you!

Villa songs all the way for me, can't abide the rest of it unless we are playing them, just a waste of time, I never join in with them, it isn't supporting Villa that?

It royally p*sses me off. They are just as guilty to be fair but I fail to see the need! Can't we concentrate on Villa?

To be honest, I'd just be grateful if a few more fans sang at all. Too often it's quiet down VP, granted there are moments when its rocking but to me it's not often enough and there are plenty of people round me in the holte who never sing at all, but don't half like a whinge. When it does really get going its immense and naturally must spur the players on. So my answer is lets focus on getting VP rocking more often and then we can start the cull on the hymn sheet.

totally agree John - but its something seen in other cities like Liverpool and Manchester where there's fierce rivalry and it will never change.

I only sing the one about Karen Brady because it makes me laugh! But I always laugh AT the Blues when all you can hear on TV/Radio is them singing S**t on the Villa - I suppose mainly because they have such a poor selection and variety of songs to sing. We have more than enough great chants to choose from to not bother sining about anyone else. SLAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAG

I think that slagging off the blue *****e is really about the Villa and our superiority over our chavvy neighbours...

But seriously boys - the reason that Blues sing about Villa is because it's all they can do. The one thing that I will give to the Blue scum fans is that they are so creative when it comes to attempting to make us look bad and themselves look, well, relevant..... We have so much history, so much sustained quality, so many great players in our past, that we should NEVER have to include them in our repetoire except the day we play them and the day they get relegated (again). As my old infant school teacher always used to say.... "ignore the baby."

And the truth in reverse is not until Blues stop looking across the city envying all things Aston Villa they will never mount to anything more than a pile of dog shyt. Even the proposed new Sty was "going to be the envy of Aston Villa" well build it first and we will see. They have been the butt of our jokes for years because they spend large portions of their time with Foot in Mouth! I always smile when they are playing Doncaster or Plymouth and spend their time singing Chit on the Villa....... They are by naturev pathetic and although I echo the sentiment about Ignoring them you have to give them credit for their comedic attempts to Immitate the top Midland Club

I have to agree with Longman. There are times when The Holte End in particular is too quiet for my liking and what we want is NOISE!!! It doesn't matter whether it's connected to our rivals or not, just so long as it's noisy! I also think the tempo of the songs is too quick as well. I have the DVD collection of the four League Cup Finals and if you listen to the singing coming from the terraces then, the songs are a lot slower and sound a lot better. So, my vote would be for "I don't care what the songs are about as long as they're LOUD!!!

This has been winding me up for years however I don't think it's as bad now as it was a few years ago. We seem to have more individual player songs than we did two or three years back - maybe this is because we have better players!! I don't mind the odd song about the Blues and I always join in whatever the song as I just want to contribute as much as possible to the noise as I feel it is my duty as a supporter to make VP as loud as I can providing I know the words and providing it's not slagging off an ex player (I didn't join in with "Gareth Barry what a w@nker"). I agree there are too many people who are more than happy to moan but never sing and show their support. The seating doesn't help as it was always less daunting to sing when you were a voice in a mob rather than now when if you sing out of turn/at the wrong time/on your own/the wrong words/ everyone around knows exactly who screwed up. Not that this bothers me as I have very few inhibitions but I can imagine if you are perhaps not comfortable with public speaking then singing at a football match may feel just as intimidating.

gmvillan so much history, so much sustained quality, so many great players in our past. Eh, Villa? well compared to Birmingham who actually may as well not exist. The best thing about Villa is the ground which i've always liked for some reason. I wouldn't say Villa have had a massively succesful history however, not relatively speaking.

I go to a fair amount of Blues games so I can see it from both sides. The one thing we have in common when singing about each other, is that it tends to be when there's not much else going on on the pitch. Maybe that has something to do with it?

I agree with Longman in some ways, it can be like a morgue down Villa Park sometimes, but like The Fear says I refuse to sing along to those particular chants, I will join in with any other song, but I hate the blues songs more than I hate the Blues, we are Aston Villa lets concentrate on them, we can have a sing about the Blues when we play them obviously but surely we should be chanting about our own team the rest of the time?

I wrote and produced an official song and autograph book that was sold by the official club shop back in the days of Big Ron. It contained a vast arrange of songs that are about the Villa that the crowd never sing anymore. Personally I do not mind having a dig at our neighbours occasionally and this has been going on as long as I have been going to the Villa. I rememeber whe we used to sing 'we hate Nottingham Forest, we hate Albion too, we hate Birmingham City but Villa we love you'. So it is wasn't only the B-lose that we picked on. However what I do hate is that the volume at the Villa is mainly concentrated at the back of the Holte. This doesn't transmit itself well to the pitch and it can sound feeble on the TV. Before we concentrate on what we are singing, we should concentrate on getting the volume increased all around the ground. There are comments from people on here complaining that they do not like the songs about the B-lose, but who sit in areas of the ground that provide absolutely no vocal support at all. The Trinity Road and Witton Lane stands should be ashamed of themselves. Stop complaining at what you don't like and start singing songs you do like. Simples!! So a note to the editor. Set up a link to a song page. Take contributions of songs we should be singing. You can control what is published so there will be no B-lose songs and maybe this will be a start to increasing Villa supporting songs. You know it makes sense.

Not a bad idea but isn't that a little sad that we need to resort to that? It would be like bringing back the drum! Could be the only option though.
