£17million For Gabby? You're Aving A Laff!

Sami Mokbel of the Daily Star has a very daft report in the paper this morning saying that Arsenal will bid £17million in the summer for Villa striker Gabby Agbonlahor

He's not for sale. I know for a fact he is very highly rated by Martin O'Neill as is our other and even younger striker Nathan Delfouneso so why on earth would we be selling a striker for such a 'low' fee? Not only is he an England international, he is also nowhere near the finished product. gabby back

Jermain Defoe was similar at Gabby's age and now four years on, look at him!

The report says that Arsene Wenger has watched Gabby a good few times and if not for the fact he 'blows hot and cold' scoring wise, he'd have moved for him before. Well, he is young and learning, he has been consistent each season with goals scored but looks to have taken a leap forward this season after what looks to have been a determined summer of training following a very rough patch from Christmas to the end of the last season. That shows he has application and ambition surely?

So would you sell Gabby? That is our latest poll question and yes, I do realise this is just press talk with no real quotes, sources or substance, but hey, we have to talk about something! :o)

No chance...!
The Fear
All this "he's still young and learning" stuff really annoys me. Qwen and Rooney were established internationals with World Cup experience hehind them at Gabby's age. Will he make South Africa next summer? Highly unlikely. I think Gabby is better than Vassell, but atm that's all I can say.
Saurat
Saurat. Rooney, Owen and Torres are exceptional players and that sort is few and far between, Most players take longer to mature, Gabby is getting better every season (this season especially) if he can keep his consistancy he will go to S.Africa.
johnmurphy3112
I feel this is simple - ignore the transfer fee, it could be £100million, who could we realistically get that is better, that would also join us as we are a long way of established top 4 at the moment? But you are right Fear, no chance - £30million i think would be O'Neils minimum if his arm were severly twisted. Now Heskey for £17million, go go go :-) I'm sorry that was uncalled for!
davidsands1982
£17million? About £7million more than he is worth, so yes please!!
young_jonah
"Jermain Defoe was similar at Gabby's age and now four years on, look at him!" Are you 'avin a laugh? Darius Vassell was similar at 23 and now look at him........
young_jonah
More likely Wenger will be after Torres for £17m.
Stig
Wenger can have siwell back for £17m ? Just a thought.
Stig
well if Carlton Cole is worth £20mill apparently, why wudnt Gabby be worth 17mill
av-jc-86
Oh what a surprise, people knocking Gabby. I seriously don't know what he has to do to get a bit of 'support' from so called 'supporters'. Some of you lot are complete **** idiots. Do you watch him week in week out, do you see his link up play, do you notice how infrequently he loses posession and uses the ball well, do you see how many times when he gets a gilt edged chance he scores it. Kn0bs
Longman
who could we get that's got so much potential for 17M ? - maybe 30M and we could get teh Torres
Lost_In_Ca
defoe was miles ahead in talent than gab at gabs age. U dont learn to finish like defoe as u get older. I would take 17m for gab without a thought. The story is bs...
asherthesmasher
No YJ, not having a laugh mate, Defoe has progressed into a top scorer and is now at the top of his game. He is 27 / 28. So for Gabby in 4 years times, he could have pushed on and be the same. We don't know - he might go the way of Joachim/Vassell but lets be positive, he might become a top top striker and lets hope and pray he does.
the fear
don't think that is right asherthesmasher, Defoe was in and out the team, he would blow hot and cold the same as Gabby does. Not saying Gabby WILL emulate Defoe but he has a chance, the world is at his feet.
the fear
I think that Agbonlahor is one of the best strikers we have at the moment so I wouldnt recomend selling him unless we already have a back up striker that has loads of quality and I just dont see that in Heskey and Carew. If MON did sell him he would panic buy once again. I think that he might be sold in the future but not this year or this summer and his price tag is sort of around there but should hit at least 20 million

I would be surprised if Gabby would want to go at this time in his career, he is at a club he supports, he has a manager who has shown faith in him, he has improved year on year, he has started this season in decent form, all he needs to do now is win over the doubters, of which there surprisingly seem to be quite a few. This guy is integral to Villa moving forward in my opinion
Fatloser
If you'd have asked me in the summer should we sell or keep him I would have said sell. I remember saying at the start of the season that he needs to start showing much more improvement or we should cash in on him now before his value plummets. Thankfully he has shown tremendous improvement and with the season so young combined with his 7 goals we might see him notch up 20. So no, we should keep the lad. Not that this is an issue anyway as he's not going anywhere!
JayVFC
I agree with Young_Jonah 100%. Even though he has looked better this season he has the touch of a rapist and can't pass a ball 10 yards. I couldn't stand him at all for the last 2 seasons because he was so unbelievably lazy but he is starting to pick up his work rate a bit this season, and he is unbelievable quick and strong but it still doesn't make up for his touch which would have to be the worst in the premiership by far.
liamo1981
Having said that we would need to have a replacement before i'd let him go, and we all know how long that can take when MO'N is on the job.
liamo1981
You agree with YJ liamo1981? Must be another one who doesn't get off his arse and go to matches : ) Gabby and real supporters, Priceless.
steff_the_villan
i'd be tempted to say yes, but then i remember that lescott cost £22MILLION!!!! given that fact, i'd be asking for approx. £40m...
NorthcliffeBandit
or...swap him for fabregas!!!
NorthcliffeBandit
He's not for sale and is an integral part of our plans to smash into that top 4 if we have any chance. We are not a selling club anyway and so why should we even entertain this bs story! Gabby HAS improved this season and I for one hope that he continues to prove his doubters wrong including those on this forum. Give the young man a break and lay off. Heskey deserves some support also or am I just being silly in trying to support the club/team that I love and will always! UTV and good on yer Gabby!
holte ender 1969
well its a bit tough to get to games when i live in australia. but there is absolutly no denying that he has terrible touch, he has been much better this season, not his touch mind you, but i ican't see him keeping it up for the whole season i really hope he proves me wrong. based on what he has shown over the last few years i would definately sell him for 17m. if you can get someone like Bent for 10m.
liamo1981
Exacly. Gabby is like a poor mans Bent lol.
asherthesmasher
liamo just get yourself a rowing boat, what's your problem? In all seriousness, the lad has come on leaps and bounds, if you were lucky enough to be at the matches you would see his work rate and how much he is improving, the lad will prove you wrong.
steff_the_villan
I really hope he does, we all love home grown talent. He has picked up his work rate this season If he can do it for a whole season i will be impressed. However, he still has terrible touch and for the last couple of years has been completly lazy, for 17m i would be happy to do business even for 10m. But opinions can change, if he scores more than 15 goals and if he keeps doing work off the ball i will be imressed.
