'If It's Football, It's Vital'

Paul McGrath - Gentleman & Legend

I went to the Paul McGrath / Ron Atkinson night that we'd publicised on Vital over the last few weeks. Great night... really, GREAT. I was too lazy (read - I was having a drink) to take photos and wasn't going to front page about it but then I just read this from fellow Vital Villan and so nearly the champ of the heads and tail game (mainly because he was sort of, kinda, how do I put this nicely? Oh yes, he was cheating!) JONAH:

What a bloke McGrath is. I asked him if he was aware of the esteem he is held in by villa fans.

I told him that I had been a villa fan for 50 years and there was no player, before or since him in that time that was held in such esteem by villa fans.

He said he knew about it, but didn't understand it as he didn't know what he had done to deserve it.

We use the term legend far too often, but that bloke deserves that title and so much more.

Says it all really doesn't it? Think of all the big headed players, all the ego's that fly about and then you get a true legend like Paul McGrath and he doesn't know what all the fuss is about. What a gent.

Gave him one of our Ooh Ahhh Paul McGrath t-shirts, said it seems everyone wants something FROM him so I wanted to give something to say thanks and to give him a laugh. Job done, he laughed! Never been that bothered meeting people but to shake his hand and say thanks was tops I must admit.

I told McGrath that he was the first player I ever saw score at Villa Park on my first trip back in 1996. He said "I scored? I am not surprised actually ask your dad, I scored lots of goals". Top bloke, Big Ron's speech was brilliant and Jim Walker was a gentleman too. Probably the best ex-player event I have been too.

A really good friend of mine is a big Man Utd fan and he says that his Dad who is also a massive Man Utd fan claims Paul McGrath is the most gifted footballer he's EVER seen in a United shirt. Now that is high praise when you think of some of the players who have played for them over the years. I'm just glad I got to see him play. It was during his time at Villa Park when I first started going to matches. Ooh Aah Paul McGrath say Ooh Aah Paul McGrath!!

Remember this one on the Holte- "Thank you very much for Paul McGrath, Thank you very much, very, very, very, very much' He was God, and he could have been one of the greatest players in world history if he had took to the field sober.
