Downing Set To Play Before Year End?

Well here is some good news, Stewart Downing could be playing before the year is out.

Martin O'Neill told the official site that the summer buy from Middlesbrough saw the specialist in the week and was 'very encouraged'.

Apparently he is now able to be mixing it up in training.

MON explained: 'It's almost like pre-season for him because he's been out since April. But it is very, very encouraging. He is a great lad with a great attitude and just wants to do it. Hopefully we'll see the best of him before Christmas. Hopefully he has no set-backs. He is doing ball-work and joined in with the other lads and next week we can really push him on a bit. It's very encouraging. '

Must admit, even if he doesn't play until January, I am looking forward to seeing what he can bring to the party.

Just wondering if we need a sweep stake on who will say 'he's just like a new signing' first?!?!?

thought he was cover for the goalie?!? Nah, seriously looking forward to seeing what Downing will bring to the party and if he is for the wing or center. Also want a picture of him in a Villa shirt, so hope he gets a bloody move on!

Downing, Ash, Milner give us a lot of options. If only we could add Defour in Jan...That'd be my only signing I think. 15m on Defour. Might let Gardener and Shorey leave...

I know its not good to 'down' a player before he's even had a chance to prove people like me wrong. its just that whenever i watched him for the Boro and England, it got to a point where he couldn't even cross a ball. So when villa signed him, i was a bit iffy. Anyone got any reasons to disagree?

He will be like a new signing , alright. Spoke with him before the Bolton game yesterday, says he can't wait to play for us, he hopes within a few weeks. He signed autographs for every kid at the railings and it was a pleasure to meet him. If he plays as well as he dealt with young fans yesterday, he'll be a class act for us.
