'If It's Football, It's Vital'

Delight At Coming From Behind

Martin O'Neill was beaming with delight after seeing us come from a goal behind today to secure all three points against Chelsea.

I think most of us would've more than taken a point before the match started and after the first 20 minutes it was beginning to look like even a point would be beyond us.

Two set pieces later, two headers from commanding, and ever growing in stature centre halves reversed all that though.

Speaking on the official site after the match, Monny said:

'I am absolutely delighted. I thought we played brilliantly in the first half and obviously had to defend strongly in the second half.

'Chelsea came at us after the break but we saw it through in the end. They had a 15 minute period - it was tough for us. But my overall view is that we were splendid.'

s for praising the players, when you pull a result like this out of the hat it's hard to single out individuals, but of course Collins and Dunne need special mentions, and Monny was also delighted with the reaction of Friedel after his early mistake.

'Our defenders are terrific players. Collins is very, very underrated. Dunne has been a really good player for a long, long time in this Premier League. But Collins is underrated. His performances for us have been fantastic.'

Adding:

'Brad came back brilliantly after his error. He didn't dwell on it. He didn't get an opportunity within two or three minutes to rectify it either so that would have been playing on his mind.'

You know folks, we might not be there yet, but maybe, just maybe we are beginning to click?

Well Done. You really showed those Arrogant chavs. although i dont admire your brand of football, i really think you guys are very Resilient team. With liverpool also loosing today, you, Us and city have a really good chance of breaking into the top 4. lets hope one of us achieve it

Arrogant, Yid? Save your judgement for some other day. Over on the Chelsea forum you'll read a number of comments crediting Villa for their performance. Villa were far more efficient than us today, and when it mattered most. It's a tough loss to digest because I feel we were pretty good and had several chances to win it. Thankfully it's a long season.

Great result. Well happy. Wait till we've got Luke, Bouma and Downing to choose from also. Collins, Dunne (the Gun) and Warnock are inspired signings. Think we can beat any team and will probably beat most. Bring it on.

A good game and the best result we could have hoped for. Chelsea weren't as good as they needed to be, simple as that. I agree with whoever said Collins & Dunne were joint MOTM - what a pair they're turning out to be. Solid performances all round. Was mildly amused by that incident with the cheese-eating surrender monkey collecting MoN as he slid off the pitch. Not as funny as Liverpool's 'beach ball' goal tho...

yeah MON has reinvented the back line really well. this needed to happen. a lot wondered about dunne and in particular collins. when the others are fit it will be hard to get in this team, my only change would be Downing in for his creativity.

Both sides could have scored a few more goals today. Chelsea had some good chances, so it's not all doom and gloom! Very happy we won and showed we can mix it with the top of the league and play a decent, attractive game of football too!

awesome performance by the lads and still 1 or 2 nowhere near on form. Our defence is now 'fixed'...we just need to address our strikeforce in January. Top 4 here we come....UTV

at the time if we would have signed some unknown italian centre back instead of collins everyone would have been gushing on these pages. fact is most people on here slated the signing because he's a generally unknown ginger welshman who stoke wanted to sign the week before. the comments were along the lines of "he's not good enough for us if stoke want him" and "these type of signings will take us no further than mid table" etc etc. Wheres the oneill out crew as well? did someone say villa fans were fickle? great performance though.

jonah, i assume your aiming that at me but your missing the point really. i'm having a dig at the fans who one minute are unswerving mon disciples then the next he's a uselss tw*t. some of the **** on here when we bought collins and dunne before they kicked a ball was unbelieveable and then you infer that I'm being unproductive by questioning the attitude of some fans. it just annoys me thats all and the comments arent related to our performance which I said was great.

Trust a stupid spud supporter to suck on somebody else.. Villa played well, took their chances and won. Although I dont exactly appreciate the one dimensional play of attacking though crosses. That's the only thing you lot did from open play! Our set piece defending was shocking and you lot took great advantage off it. Well done lads.

Collins is immense, he was the best buy in the last transfer window. I'm not going to complain in the next window cos MON def knows what he's doing. I doubted the Collins signing but he has been absolute class.

Collins MOTM - but I have to say - and through gritted teeth - thats the best, ok maybe not the best - but the most effort Ive ever seen Gabby put into a game. He looked like a different player to the one that "did okay" for England - keep it up son.

Still amazes me that some still don't get not being happy with pathetic managerial decisions at points automatically means you can't love it when we win?

As for those gloating, was it just me who saw our play improve, our goals come, and our midfield be less overrun when Milly moved a little more central and Gabby moved slightly to the right?

Is that not the 433 in attack, and 451 in defence tactic that we ABSOLUTELY didn't employ during the best period of the match for us? Nah can't be....can it. Even the wondrous Man City result was faught out with the negative moaners pet hate...442...wasn't it. Not like John Carew was in midfield for most of the match.

PMSL surreal.
