'If It's Football, It's Vital'

Heskey Rubbishes Quit Coverage

Emile Heskey has spoken out for the first time since the recent 'I'll consider quitting' articles that aired whilst he was away on international duty.

On the official site, Heskey took the opportunity to state he was enjoying the challenge at Villa and wants to fight for his place, with quitting not even entering his thoughts.

'I am here to fight for my place, everyone is in the same ballpark.

'You have to embrace the challenge.'

Heskey continues to state that he was 'heavily misquoted' by the media commenting that after a game players are asked 'about 10 million questions' and insisting:

'Most of my replies were one word answers and then I read headlines saying I'm going to quit Villa and things like it.'

Emile says it left him 'confused,' but that he shouldn't be surprised as it happens all the time 'and you just hope it doesn't happen to you.'

Heskey also doesn't believe, after thinking about his answers, that he even intimated an unhappiness at Villa, but he's very thankful for the support from Monny, who gave him the impression that he knew the story was nonsense.

'The manager knows what I'm like. I have spoken to him and explained the quotes.

'I think the manager knew anyway that certain things weren't said.'

He also couldn't resist adding that most people only read the headlines and assume that the headline is all that matters when forming opinions.

'The headline said more than the whole piece actually.

'I am here, I am a Villa player and in spite of what the headlines say, I'm not going to quit.'

There you go folks, straight from the horses mouth. There was no talk about leaving in January or reassessing his future to ensure his England place.

There was no reason for Monny to make sarcastic comments about the World Cup not being next week, or even before Christmas.

It was all nonsense.

to be fair, the press can twist the words 'I'm happy at Villa and realise I'm not in the first team because I've not been playing so well but I will stay and fight and start scoring because I love the claret and blue' with 'I will assess come January' so very easily because of the language barrier.... oh hang on a minute, Emile is English isn't he?!?!?

and the slightly (only slightly mind you) more sensible response. It IS very easy to be misquoted when interviewed and when I did my doo dahs at the times of the protests I'd often read a report and think 'I didn't say that' !!!!!

Believe NOTHING you read in the papers. NOTHING. If any of you or your family have ever been in your local paper you will realise that they get NOTHING right. They will spell your name wrong, get your age wrong and completely make up half of the story. It's what journo's are taught at college. BELIEVE NOTHING!!

Everybody keeps saying that Emile is one of the nicest people on the planet , Maybe he needs to get a bit nasty on the pitch and start throwing his weight around . I have slagged him off as much as anyone but i would love to see him start scoring regularly and i hope he gets a good reception from the Villa crowd .

Funnily enough Adam trainee journo's doing the NCTJ also learn about libel, and considering your post is nonsense, can you please qualify it by saying in your limited experience. Unless of course you undertook the NCTJ and had accredited tutors who did just that of course?
mike_field
seems like he handled this a little better than NRC.

Here's the transcript and you can have a look at the Q&A session in all its glory. And you may even notice that he brings the issue of not playing at Villa up! And when asked about possibly changing clubs in January he says: "I will have to sit down and think about my next move." Was that a battling effort with 10 men? "It was difficult. We knew it would be a difficult game and then going down to 10 men made it worse but we battled and the lads showed great character. We had them going for a bit in the second half, but we knew it was going to be a difficult game." Was it tough having to lead the line on your own? "One up front is always difficult, but you just have to battle out there for as long as you can." How grateful are you that Fabio is keeping faith with you at the moment? "I'm happy to be playing and, obviously, not playing at club level is difficult and it's something I will have to look at when I get back and try to address it." Has Fabio spoken to you about not playing for Villa? "No, not really. I just have to keep performing well in training and keep going." Can you get a World Cup place if you're not playing for Villa? "I don't know. I don't know." Are you worried about it? "You always think about those kind of things, but, like I said, I will just have to try to address it when the time is right." You have always come back from knocks in the past in your career... "I'm never going to give up, it's just another hurdle I have to get over." Why are you first choice for England and not for Villa? "You would have to ask the manager. I wouldn't know." Will you think about changing club in January? "That's what I mean. I will have to sit down and think about my next move." Do you feel sorry for Rob Green? "At times you just mistime things and he's seen he could get there and couldn't. He will probably look at it and think he could have got there, but he was just a second too late." Was it difficult for Green when flares come raining down on him after 30 seconds? "That's something that happens over here. We never see things like that in England, but it's something that happens regularly over here." Did you hear any racist chanting? "No, I didn't hear any myself personally." Are you keeping your spirits up at Villa? "Yeah, that's one thing I've got to try to do. I must keep my spirits up and keep going, keep training hard and then just try to address it." A lot of clubs would want you in January if you become available? "Yeah, I will have to see what happens." Sorry, Emile, but that's hardly a resounding: I will stay at Villa, fight for my place and I'm not thinking about leaving.

How disappointing - we all thought we were going to get shot of the useless lump. Have to put the champagne back on ice.

I'm not normally one to slag any Villa signing - if they're in the shirt they should get our support. But I will make an exception for Heskey, I just couldn't understand why at a time when we desperately needed better quality cover all over the pitch and especially up front, we signed a striker who can't score goals. Don't give me any of that crap about great partnerships and that defences find him a handful either. He's nowhere near Big John's league for either. Wigan are interested in him for January apparently - fill yer boots fellas.

Oh and.. he's going to be on a plane for South Africa next season. Meanwhile Ashley Young and James Milner are not at all certainties. What the hell ?
