The Mystery Of Emile Heskey!

Fabio Capello says he is sticking with Villa 'striker' Emile Heskey: Capello said in the Mirror: 'Heskey hasn’t played a lot of games. We have some movement that he did when he plays with the national team, without the ball, that’s important for us. I can see how important he is. It’s a long way until the World Cup, still.'

Meanwhile his former Boss whilst at the Blues and Wigan, Steve Bruce says that Heskey has to be part of the World Cup plans for England despite having started as many games for England this season as he has for Villa....!

Bruce told The Sun: 'Before I signed Emile for Birmingham I had a long chat with Michael Owen about him. It was quite an in-depth conversation, during which Michael told me how much he enjoyed playing with Emile and how he helped his own game. Talk to anyone who has ever played with Emile and they will all tell you how good he is. I'm sure that Wayne Rooney appreciates the work he does. Rooney likes playing off him, because I think Rooney's natural position is to play off a big man.'

He also says there is a shortage of target men in the game now which is why people keep going back to Heskey. 'That's why you keep going back to Emile because, of his type, he's still arguably the best. We've got Peter Crouch but he's slightly different to an out-and-out targetman. Look at the performances over the years and you will see that when England have played well, Emile has usually been in the team.'

Mr Potato Head does however admit that his downfall is 'he doesn't score enough but he contributes to the team, make no mistake about that. He hasn't won nearly 60 caps by accident.'

Strange one isn't it? Since he's come to Villa - and I'm not alone on this one from reading forum posts and hearing the chat in the pubs and at the Villa - he's been average at best. I SO wanted him to make an impact when he came on v Man City for instance but he just seems devoid of any sort of form for Villa and I can't re-call the last time he actually shot let alone scored.

For Villa he has made 12 starts and scored 2 goals. In anyones language, that isn't good enough for a striker is it?

was so hoping he'd prove us all wrong when he came to Villa and started banging in the goals, I just don't see what the many managers who have spent millions on him over his career see in a striker who doesn't score though? If he was setting up our other strikers I'd get it no problem but he isn't?! Still, as long as he is in the claret and blue, I'll still hope and pray he clicks!

well with Carews new position in midfield we may well see Heskey getting a few more games, and who knows, a run of games for the big fella may well lead to a few goals

yup, good point, for strikers especially I've often read them saying about getting into a rythm and how much it is confidence led.

do you think there maybe a little poetic justice in the fact that Barry "I must go to Man City to secure my England place" has been dropped for Carrick ???

I'm no big Emile Heskey fan but I do see what he can bring to a team. Im no football expert but am involved in coaching at a reasonable level & do see the benefits of Heskey at times.HOWEVER & before I get crucified by u all ;-) I at the minute & the recent past can not see what he brings to the side. He does not score but never seems to set anyone up or really effect play. I still get behind him though as he is a villan & while he continues to wear the claret & blue I always will. And if players can feel the moans groans & negative vibes towards them it will not improve their game 1 iota!!!!!

Can't see how he gets into the England side when he doesn't start for Villa...don't care how good someone is. If they're not playing every week then they shouldn't be picked. Just shows you how poor Englands striker options must be.

Heskey the targetman? Yup, I guess I'd like to use him as a target all right. Preferably with a harpoon gun.

Heskey and Beckham are being picked on sentiment and now a badly out of form ferdinand whose mistake put Green into the position where he got sent off cost England the game. After the send off i thought Heskey (being the most over rated player in the country) would have come off . Was hoping to see Gabby start , maybe in the next game .Thought Milner did well .

Barry certainly wasn't dropped. He would have been rested due to his stiff back, although had the Ukraine game had something on it, I suspect Barry would have played. Barry is one of the first names on Cappello's team sheet, and rightly so because, in addition to be an excellent player in his own right, he enables players around him to play at a higher level. Carrick, meanwhile, is hilariously overrated. I would think there are at least a dozen midfielders who should be ahead of him in the pecking order. His continued selection is almost as bizarre as Heskey's!

Agreed marcobavfc, when doing what he does, he can drag defenders away etc but as you imply in your post, he doesn't do it for Villa, so it become a bit confusing. The Blues fans were the same, he scored 3 (if memory serves me right?) in the season they went down. Great help!

Heskey is one of the best in the world at playing the ball down to his strike partner, unfortunately, we don't have that sort of player beside him, Gabby is better on his own as I don't think he can read the flick on's etc, and Carew is to big to be the little man in a partnership with Heskey, if Bent, Owen or Defoe were at the club then I could see a point to Heskey, as it is, there is no reason to have him, as we don't use him to his strengths and instead he just looks off the pace playing alongside Young and Gabby. I do genuinely believe him to be a top player, but I just don't think he is suited to our style.
