Fabio Capello says he is sticking with Villa 'striker' Emile Heskey: Capello said in the Mirror: 'Heskey hasn’t played a lot of games. We have some movement that he did when he plays with the national team, without the ball, that’s important for us. I can see how important he is. It’s a long way until the World Cup, still.'
Meanwhile his former Boss whilst at the Blues and Wigan, Steve Bruce says that Heskey has to be part of the World Cup plans for England despite having started as many games for England this season as he has for Villa....!
Bruce told The Sun: 'Before I signed Emile for Birmingham I had a long chat with Michael Owen about him. It was quite an in-depth conversation, during which Michael told me how much he enjoyed playing with Emile and how he helped his own game. Talk to anyone who has ever played with Emile and they will all tell you how good he is. I'm sure that Wayne Rooney appreciates the work he does. Rooney likes playing off him, because I think Rooney's natural position is to play off a big man.'
He also says there is a shortage of target men in the game now which is why people keep going back to Heskey. 'That's why you keep going back to Emile because, of his type, he's still arguably the best. We've got Peter Crouch but he's slightly different to an out-and-out targetman. Look at the performances over the years and you will see that when England have played well, Emile has usually been in the team.'
Mr Potato Head does however admit that his downfall is 'he doesn't score enough but he contributes to the team, make no mistake about that. He hasn't won nearly 60 caps by accident.'
Strange one isn't it? Since he's come to Villa - and I'm not alone on this one from reading forum posts and hearing the chat in the pubs and at the Villa - he's been average at best. I SO wanted him to make an impact when he came on v Man City for instance but he just seems devoid of any sort of form for Villa and I can't re-call the last time he actually shot let alone scored.
For Villa he has made 12 starts and scored 2 goals. In anyones language, that isn't good enough for a striker is it?
