So Are You Going To Boo Gareth Barry?

Gulp...

Here we go...

Villa v Manchester City and the return of Gareth Barry.

Got to say I'm dreading it. I hated seeing him go but bare him very little malice. I'd have preferred he went to a Champions League team but can understand after nearly 12 years he wanted a change and most especially as he has seen the same players coming in under Martin O'Neill that we have. Now some are happy with the purchases and that is fine, others aren't sure that the right players have been brought in to truly push the top four... maybe Barry was the same?

I don't think, as some have suggested, he was a liar going to Man City. Yes, I'm sure if a CL team came in for him he'd have chosen them over and above Man City but they didn't and he has moved to a club who he could see clearly had the financial power to do what Chelsea did before them, spend spend spend their way potentially to the top.

So our latest poll asks... will you boo him?

I won't but I can understand that some will due to the fact he was a Villa hero and disappointed many leaving. For me he gave us good service - and in return we gave him a great career and helped make him the player he is. Surely if we boo a player, especially one who was our rock for years and to be fair one who left making Villa a good deal of money (12million) when you consider the fact he was in the last year of his contract and could have just played that out and gone for nothing? Also I have to question what impression we give the current Villa players if we start booing their former team-mate? Do they really go from hero to zero?

Martin O'Neill told the Express: 'I can empathise with Gareth in many aspects because I was at one club for 10 years myself as a player. I’m sure if you speak to him you will find he is pretty pleased with his decision.'

Mon is also quoted in a report by Janine Self at The Sun . Ok, ok, I'm only linking to that one because I'm quoted as well...!!!!!!!!!!!!!

MON said Barry was a big player for Villa and wishes he was still here, adding that he doesn't know what the fans will make of it all.

Meanwhile my thoughts were: 'I think it's a 50-50 split. I'm really dreading it. He gave us really good service and a lot of fans remember that. But there are some who are angry that he left.'

And the bit that might get me in hot water....! 'If I take my rose-tinted specs off, I can see that he has more chance of reaching the Champions League at City than with us.'

Is that a controversial thought? If you weren't a Villa fan but were a betting man, who would you back to potentially push into the top four? The wealth they have gives them a better chance of 'doing a Chelsea' and buying the league surely?

I also pointed out as I've done in the forum thread (click here) that WE are the fans, they are the employees, they move on, we don't... so, do we really need to give him a bad reception on Monday night?

Lets face it, this is football, sanity goes out the window and the modern way seems to be booing, so I think there is the answer. I'm dreading it, the thoughts of such a player being booed by 'his own' makes me cringe, I still say if not for him and James Milner who was on loan from Newcastle at the time, we'd have been relegated in the last year under David O'Leary.

Ho hum.

James Nursey in The Mirror has a column saying Villa fans shouldn't boo.

James says: His decision was seen as being motivated by money - not ambition.

But four months on and Barry's choice to leave Villa for Eastlands appears understandable as City are now genuine top four contenders.

Their astonishing spending spree has subsequently attracted big-names like Carlos Tevez, Emmanuel Adebayor, Kolo Toure, Joleon Lescott and Roque Santa Cruz to help vindicate Barry's decision.

The ace himself appears to be one of City's most consistent players and is thriving on a new challenge.

Now the City fans love Barry like their Villa counterparts used to as the player is very dependable.

But I think Barry still deserves the respect of Villa fans.

I'll not boo, only thing that would make me change my mind is if he kissed their badge, but he isn't that daft or disrespectful so that won't be an issue!

i'm going to dip myself into the "will not boo or clap" waters. very anxious at the thought of monday night's atmosphere. i have no idea what noise to expect to hear when gareth does get hold of the ball. i hope he doesn't get booed, because he was a credit to villa. but at the same time, we've both moved on - and i will not be clapping the chap.

I agree. Compare Barry to Mellberg and it is a no contest. Barry cost nothing (fines aside), gave us 11 years and made us 12 million, whilst being our most consistent performer. Mellberg, who was tremendous, gave us 6 years, cost over 5million, wouldn't sign a contract and has touted himself around Europe ever since. And we never got a penny back. I wish Barry was still a Villa player and I will be giving him a warm welcome but hope we stuff City and he misses a sitter and scores an own goal.

Evening Villans! I was just mentioning to The Fear that from what we've seen so far this season, this City side tend to close ranks and work harder if they come under any boo-style treatment. So I say yes, give him the works!

I hope Barry gets a warm reception but expect that he will get something closer to hot. We could clap him and show the world we are a big hearted club that can overcome the loss of players to other clubs and build for success unhindered....or we could boo him and look small minded and petty. Personally I feel a massive swell of vocal support for current players would have a far more positive effect on the result of the game than a constant barrage against an opposition player. I unfortunately expect the worst and we as a support will do ourselves no favours.

Good positive article, Brendan, Voice of the Holte I'm with you totally. It's a good opportunity to show what Villa fans stand for. Any fool can boo; lets show a bit of class.

Will I boo? NOT A CHANCE! The guy is a Villa hero. He is in the top 10 Villa appearances in the clubs history. If we are gonna boo all Villa legends maybe we should extend the treatment to McGrath, Mortimer and Mellberg too? Grow up, understand that professionals move jobs all the time in all walks of life and show some respect for a man who gave us the best years of his career!

Im in the mind that i really want to boo him, but i don't think it's because of him, it's more because of Man City. Thing is, im a younger Villa fan and have always known Barry as one of our most important players. Players come and go but for me Barry was Villa through and through...then he left. I will probably do what i feel in the moment, if he was at Liverpool he would get a cheer. I wish Downing was fit so we could cheer him, or Bouma to raise the atmosphere even more!

When you had your first poll on this I said that I would boo. Now, however, I shall simply treat him as a member of the opposing team. Which means that I shall attempt to ignore him whilst giving the Villa my full support.

Great Article Fear. Agree with everything you say! I also hope he gets a good reception, but fear the worst. Because even if only 10% boo it still sounds like half the stadium. He doesn't deserve it, how can he after all the 100% effort and service he gave Villa. Not to mention the trouble he went to writing that explanation letter to the B Mail. He didnt need to do that, but cared enough too. I think that part of him is STILL claret and blue, and it would be cruel to treat him badly. I have great respect for the Liverpool fans who always seem to give returning players a good reception. They even chanted Baros name when he returned with Villa and he hardly did anything there! If we boo it shows that MON's complaints about fans are justified!

We'll all give Richard Dunne a round of applause for the loyal service he gave our club over 9 years. He was our player of the season 4 years running, so even though he had a bit of a dig on leaving, his service warrants our respect. I'm sure there are a few Villans out there who are probably feeling aggrieved that GB left you to come to us, but I'm sure most of you would agree that Liverpool messed Barry about, so he was correct in not choosing to go to Anfield. Ultimately, it won't matter what reaction GB gets as he's a professional and will get on with his job. I'm sure you'll make your feelings known, but have no doubt you'll show far more class than the Arsenal or Manure fans have in recent weeks.

I think the best way we can show our support for the Villa players and remind Gareth what he once had would be to sing the "Milner For England" song as often and as loud as possible. This was, after all Gareth's chant for many a season. A far more productive way to react IMO. MILNER FOR ENGLAND!!

Please don't boo him. It would be hugely disrespectful after the service he gave us for so long. I hope he goes on and does well with Man City and gets a chance to play in the World Cup and Champs League. Players move on, it's the way things are ! Look at what fifthcolumnblue said about Dunn, that's the way to behave. UTV

"Jimmy Milner is Brazilian, we won't sell for 20 million, On the wing he's f***ing brilliant, We Love Jimmy Milner!" (Milner - Brazilian? Not sell 20 million?, 10 will do. Geordies eh?) Love the song though.

Why shouldnt Barry be booed ? he's playing for the team trying to beat Villa , they should all be slaughtered with every touch of the ball , a bit like the welcome you may get at somewhere like Galatasary . The thing that gets right up my tits is this "cost us nothing" and good servant crap , he cost us over a million from Brighton and further millions in wages and coaching investment . Barry chose to leave Villa , that makes his past exploits worth nothing . I wish people would stop acting like fannies trying to protect someone who walked out on our club with false statements regarding a Champions League dream . He and his team mates should be hammered every time they get the ball .
