The Woes Of Curtis Davies?

James Nursey of The Mirror has a report today claiming that Curtis Davies might be considering his future come the January transfer window due to a contract row.

Davies, who it was claimed yesterday (see: More Aston Villa Press Transfer Talk!) in the Sun would be offered a new 3 year deal is apparently not happy with what might be on offer.

The 24-year-old former West Bromwich Albion defender, out for up to five months following shoulder surgery, it is claimed in this report is 'disappointed' to have become one of the lowest earners on just £25 000 a week. That really is slave labour and I am sure all our hearts go out to the chap during this most difficult of times.

I'd not have given that much credence to this report if not for the fact it is by James Nursey who is a good guy and well connected + the fact he has quotes from the defenders agent Phil Sproson.

Apparently Davies has played 58 games and has to play 60 before he can negotiate a new deal with Martin O'Neill wanting the player to play the extra two games before negotiations begin. Where is the problem with that? The player is out at the moment, surely £25k will 'get him through' until he can once again try to prove his worth? Or is he upset because we have two other central defenders now and he realises, having been up and down in form, that his automatic starting place is now very much under threat?

His agent said it is 'disappointing' because he played when the club were low on numbers.

Sorry, didn't he play because he was bought for nearly £10million and was paid to play? Not because the club were low on central defenders?

Wouldn't it be great if agents were banned from football if this is the sort of stuff they come out with?!?!

He added in the report - (full report: The Mirror) - that they had thought they'd be able to negotiate before reaching the 60 game mark adding, 'But it’s the club’s prerogative and we respect Martin’s decision. We’ll have to look at the situation in January when Curtis is available and plays two more games.'

Respect? If there was respect, how did this report with these quotes appear?! Tut tut I say... what say you?!

This sounds like another ar*ehole agent talking things up to increase his percentage. Play 2 more games and then we'll talk??? Rubbish. More like MON has said there's no mad rush, you're in Villa's plans, hang in there and get the shoulder straight. Curtis's attitude and dediaction and performances have been spot on in a somewhat mix and match back four recently. Agree with you Fear - kick agents like this out of the game!

O'Neill is never rushed over signing new contracts, and why should he be? If the player has over a year left, it's the club's perogative to not offer a new contract. If they keep offering new contracts early, a player's (already grossly large) wages will just increase quicker. It's not like contract negotiations ever end with a player having a lower wage is it, so it's in the player (and more importantly the agent's) interests for the re-nogiation to happen asap. Hope Curtis comes out and calls his agent a tool.

Pathetic if true. A contract is a contract. Renegotiate after you've played 60 games means exactly that. Get over yourself. I'm right behind MON on this one. Again....pathetic.

thanks kaptabster, agreed. I think they are divorced from reality and the agents talking like this really do the players no favours at all. If they can't see that there is a recession on which is hitting all us 'normal' people and that quotes like the above show a massive amount of disrespect, then they are just going to alienate more and more fans who pay their hard earnt money to watch the games.

I may be reading too much into this but when he says "he played when the club were low on numbers" is he implying that Curtis was asked to play when he was injured against medical advice? i.e. potentially making his injury worse. Also the agent's quotes, "We’ll have to look at the situation in January when Curtis is available and plays two more games" to me state simply they will enter negotiations with Villa when Curtis is fit again and has played the required games. Nothing is mentioned about possibly leaving the club in the transfer window.

Fazza, i think its more the fact that the agent has gone on the record making bold (and imo rediculous) claims and insinuations when all the guy has to do is play two more games and he will be in the driving seat with regard to the new contract. Fact is, hes injured, two games away from the contract talks so he and his agent have decided that those games no longer matter. When MON says, "Actually they do matter as that was the agreement" once again dummies are being thrown out of the pram. As someone above said, we didn't buy him to play "INCASE" we ask, he plays every game we want him to as his employers providing he doesnt have an injury that means there is no possibility. And he plays for the wages agreed upon until such a time they are negotiable which, as the agent himself states without even bloody thinking about it, is not for another two matches. Case SOLVED.

Has he been paying his 25k back and living on SSP since his injury or taking the clubs money and treatment for granted? I think I can prob answer that one myself.

must admit I'd hate an agent or anyone else to speak on my behalf, it is bad enough speaking directly because you are always in danger of being misquoted or at the very least the headlines making you look like you've said something you haven't!

I completely agree with O'neill on this. Davies needen't worry about losing his place at Villa, he will definitely get a new contract with us, he is in the gaffers plans. It is insulting that Davies' agent thinks that he can he can get Davies an extra few grand a week while he is benched! If Davies' injury was to last longer than his contract then he will definitely get another. Just like Bouma did when his ran out after his injury.

I don't put much faith in anything printed in a newspaper -- that's like trusting a politician ... However, I am getting very tired of 'stars' who earn a fortune hiding behind their agents. If this agent is being quoted correctly, Curtis Davis can easily release a statement saying he did not authorise it, and slap the guy's wrists, or agree with it. It was the same with the statements issued by Barry's agent. Stop hiding guys; you ARE responsible for controlling your agent's press releases.

agreed arc, thing is MON put his faith in the player, you only have to see how much we paid for him to see that. Also agree Mr Builder sir, once you see quotes the articles do have more credence and can't be as easily dismissed.
