'If It's Football, It's Vital'

Monny Has Europa Complex

Martin O'Neill has admitted he is envious that Everton and Fulham will be slogging it out in the Europa League tonight after Vienna dumped us on our Arse...played last night.

Speaking on the official site this morning, Monny couldn't help but wonder 'what if' as our fellow Premiership colleagues take on AEK Athens and CSKA Sofia respectively tonight.

However, their is a bright side. It has allowed him all week to work with the team on ensuring we take a further 3 points this season from Pompey.

'It's great to have this time to work with the players, but with the Europa League matches coming up, it's the first time I have really missed those adventures.'

So do we Martin.

He further explains Europe was the ideal place to bring through the youngsters to get them used to first team action without running the risk of dropping point sin the league.

'I said a long time ago that I wanted to integrate the younger players with the more senior ones in Europe. That would've been nice.'

He does make an issue out of the squad size again, stating that when you have a decent squad and depth you will miss it more (obviously he's now happy with our numbers), but when a squad is smaller it is more of a blessing in disguise.

I think most fans would disagree with his latter point, there is nothing like an evening European game at B6 and you can never have enough of them, even if you have to bring people out of retirement to fill the bench!

Oh well, hopefully we can attain European qualification this season again, and next season we can really go for it and genuinely attempt to win a Trophy at the end of it.

I think with Citeh & Spuds not in Europe this season, and with Everton's squad falling apart by the seams, this is genuinely a blessing in disguise for us. IMO the squad would have been better prepared than last season but I think if there was a season not to be in Europe, this is it. I know Mike, I'm such a positive son-of-a-gun aint I!

Yeah, well perhaps if you had treated the competition with respect in the qualifying rounds we'd still be in it!

i didnt realise untill the other day that the prize money for winning the europe league is only 5m or some tiny amount like that and if you get to the final you play 18/19 games hardly really seems worth the bother to me i would like to know what the money is for finishing 5th or 4th in the league???? and what you get if you qualify for champions league???

What I would judge it by it to take the UEFA game schedule, and look at how many points we took from the games immediatley after them (starting with Pompy this weekend). That is 6 games and 18 points. If we collect most of them it will be due to freshness and preparation. Lets just wait and see. It starts on Saturday v Pompy. I dont think Villa have ever been shorter odds for a Premierhsip game (except maybe v Derby when we beat them by 6 and Petrov scored that stunner!)
