Portsmouth Attendance? Why Not Bolster It?

voiceoftheholte asks for a full house on Saturday:

I know that I am often scathing/repetitive with my views on our support, but I do it because I think it is one of the most important issues affecting our club . . . and because I think I am right.

However let me make it 100% clear, the fans that turn up week in week out and give time, money and their full vocal support, I applaud you. Those that turn up but only make any noise when you are moaning I believe are doing the club a disservice. Those that turn the backs on the team 10 minutes before the end of the game and choose to leave, are disrespectful to the players and other supporters. I, like most Villa fans, want a full house every week, with all sides of the ground giving massive vocal support to the team.

That brings me on to Saturdays game against Pompey. The ground holds approx 42,500. 1500 of this will be taken by Pompey fans. Will we fill the other 41,000 seats? I suspect not. My estimated
attendance will be about the 36,000 region. However if it is a full house, I stand corrected and offer my apologies in advance. The reasons it should be a full house are numerous, other than the main reason being, it is the Villa and you should be at the game come hell or high water.

But in no particular order, it is Saturday at 3pm. It is not live on tv. We have won our last 4 games. We have beaten both Redscouse and Small Heath in that run. We won our last home game. We have a team packed with quality, most are internationals, some local Villa supporting players and a nucleus of English talent that is widely acknowledged at the highest levels of the game. The ground is fabulous and the weather is predicted to be good. It is a Villa Value game meaning that seats are amongst the best priced in the league. We have owners and a manager that most clubs would gladly have and Randy has invested millions again in ensuring that we now have a squad that almost has two good players for every single position. Access and costs for families and disabled is better than most other clubs in the league. Pretty much everything we have asked for as fans we have got.

Now I know that there are fans who will come on and say they can't afford it, or they are away this weekend, or they live too far away. And that will be the case with every club in every league in the country. However, if we were playing this Saturday at 5.30pm, on the TV, with category A prices, had lost last weekend, but were playing Redscouse, Manure, Small Heath, maybe even Wolves, Man Citeh, Spuds, Chelski or the Arse, then we would be getting a full house . . . or near as damn it.

Why?

If we could get a full house because the opposition was different, it was live on TV and it was more expensive, then money/travel/time isn't the excuse. So what is? Why would more fans want to come and watch a game against Manure (who we haven't beat in a league game for 14/15 years I think) than would want to to watch us in a game where we are more likely to win?? Maybe it is me, but that just doesn't make sense. Does it?

So we have established it is not the money. It is not even the entertainment because if the opposition was Manure for example, then we would get a bigger crowd to probably see us lose than we would against Pompey to probably see us win. My view is that we have too many supposed supporters who simply can't be arsed. And again I will stand corrected if it is a full house on Saturday. For years the part timers have demanded this that and the other in return for their support. Well now we have owners who have put up their money and said 'we have done as you have asked.

We have bent over backwards to ensure that you can be proud of your club. Now show us that you were not all hot air and you keep your side of the bargain'. Unfortunately we have been found wanting, have been shown to be all talk, and worst of all . . . fickle. Why?

Or it's still the reason some can't turn up regularly because of money regardless of opposition so maybe have to pick and choose who we play (the point about turning up to games we could lose is irrelevant because fans want to be entertained and if you are limited in games, you want to see the best possible games which includes top opposition)

When they do have to leave early because of travelling, I leave early to avoid the crush - I'm pretty sure the players couldn't give a toss.

when playing the bigger clubs non regular fans turn up to watch the opposition. Ever thought that could be it considering almost every club sells out when playing Man U etc?

All that's established is you believe you can explain life's circumstances for everybody else. Nothing more, nothing less. Wrong, but decent read though.

I would have thought (hoped) that there will be more than 36000 there on Saturday for the very reasons you mentioned above VOTH, the recent run etc. I wouldn't underestimate the impact of the recession though mate. I lost my job recently and am broke, fortunately though I had already renewed my ST so will be there. If I hadn't done so there is no way I could afford to go this weekend (or any other), and I know there are a LOT of people in a similar position right now.

Rather than continuing to wait for an email back from the ticket office - can anyone let me know if I order tickets online/over the phone this late notice, will I pick them up at the ground itself? Sorry for the daft question, I've been away for quite a while...!

Yes mate, there is a ticket office behind the Holte end, you normally pick them up from there on the day.

I think as a club our next aim should be getting a full house for every game, we can then expand the stadium and compete more with the top 4, however i see both sides of the arguments if people cant afford then they cant afford it end of, although our ticket pricing is very good. On the issue of leaving early i hate it, howver its the individuals decision, sumtimes you also have to leave for personal reasons and not football reasons, good post though.

some good points, early leavers irritate me too. And the point about the moaners is a good one - supporters is what we are and should be. As for the right to pick and choose, thats fair enough but the article puts forward a good point. Value games are that and usually have an increased chance of a home win, by picking these over the premium matches you could make more games per season, possibly, and you would be likely to get better seats at these too, likely. It's another angle.

I've got to be honest, I won't be going because I can't be arsed. The question is though; after going regularly for a quarter of a century, why is it now that, "I can't be arsed"? I'm not sure I know myself really but, having grown up with football in the 70's and 80's, I think it's a number of changes to the game that have made me lose my passion for going; All seated stadiums, the growth of the 'prawn sandwich brigade', the 'Sky 4', the not bothering with cups because CL gives you more money IF you qualify, saturation TV coverage, games being moved left right and centre, prices increasing whilst my wages stagnate, extortionate travel costs..... I could go on as it's probably a combination of all the above and many other things. For me though, I would have probably put up with the above....if only the football wasn't so poor at VP.

class of 82. I think that about sums up many people who used to support the Villa, but who no longer do. We are now just the club who you used to support. You may even tell people you are a Villa supporter and other people may think we are all like you. We are not. Some of us still care and support the club. As for the football at VP, it is better than at most grounds, but not as good as others. However what does make the difference to the perception of a performance is fan enjoyment/participation. I watched Besiktas against Manure on Tuesday and Besiktas hardly had an attack of note (neither did Manure), but with 15 minutes left the whole ground was rocking. There were men and women, young and old, all absolutely having a great time in support of their team. Had that match been at Villa Park there would have been disgruntled moans and the ground would have been like a library. And that is exactly what lets VP down. Those of us who want to have a good time, irrespective of the performance, are dragged down to levels of misery by the majority of fans who can't be bothered to add to the entertainment.

I have to agree with most of the points made by VOTH. There are two things that do really annoy me though that I can never get my head around. One week we'll be playing the likes of Bolton or Wigan Sat 3pm ko and get a crowd of say 36,000 the next when Man U or L'pool come to town we've got a full house. Who are these 'Villa fans' who suddenly appear, clearly they can't be Villa fans they are just there to see the big boys as you rightly say sure if a Villa fan is going to pick and choose games you pick the ones you think Villa are most likely to win, or if money is the issue pick the VV games. As for leaving games early, disgraceful no excuse I travel up from London and leaving the ground 5 -10 minutes early could potentially mean I get home in an hour and a half rather than 2 1/2 - 3 hours it sometimes takes. There's a group of guys who sit a few seats down from me they are there for every home game, arrive 5 mins after kick off head to the concourse for their halftime pint & pie 5-10 mins before halftime back in their seats for the 2nd half 5-10 mins after kick off and then on their way out the ground with 10 mins to go. They are so regular you could set your watch by them, I can't help but think what's the point, they miss a third of the game every week, crazy, but I suspect there are quite a few just like them.
