Sidwell Understands Coker's Sub Anger

Steve Sidwell has admitted that Nigel Reo-Coker was unlucky to be the player that made way for John Carew in our derby match against Blues.

Speaking to the Birmingham Mail today, Sidwell is honest about the fact that nobody in midfield was really shining or standing out in the derby clash, and although the introduction of Carew guaranteed 3 points, O'Neill could've rightly dragged any of them off.

Coker was visibly annoyed to be brought from the pitch, which to be honest is exactly what I want to see from substituted players.

No player should ever be happy leaving the field of the play before the game ends in my minds. Players just shouldn't be that complacent in my mind and one thing you know from Hokey is he wears his heart on his sleeve even when he's not the most productive on the pitch, you can never fault his effort.

Sidwell himself said nobody at the club likes to be brought off, regardless of the scoreline and having known Hokey since he was in nappies seeing that disappointment was only to be expected. In fact, something would be wrong if Nigel was pleased to be subbed.

'He wants to play in every moment and do his best, he can't do that on the bench.

'He got subbed and he was disappointed and you can understand why. It could've been anyone of us, no one really stood out for us.

'He was just unlucky.'

Explaining their history, which I certainly didn't know. Both players have known each other for quite a while as they were members of rival youth teams in South London until their careers took off and Hokey went to Wimbledon and Sidwell to Arsenal.

Sidwell does say the 'grumpy' Hokey only comes out when his will to win gets the better off him, and that he is brilliant to have around the dressing room normally.

He does admit he can be 'miserable' although everyone still loves him.

Reo-Coker has often been a victim of his own versatility (CM, DM, MR, RB, SW). On Sunday I was pretty surprised it wasn't the already cautioned Sidwell who came off. It's good to see Reo-Coker being played more often in his right position though.

its crazy that when wayne rooney does it, its called passionate and when NRC does it, its a sulk but at the end of the day im sure no one has a problem with a player who wants to play, as sidwell says it just the way NRC is and he never brings spirit down so i see no problem

All I can say, NRC keep up the good work. Your getting back to your best. The engine of the team. Sidwell should have come off in my opinion.

FFS Lerner...this is exactly what fans what to see, a player who cares and who is not all about the money. Give the guy a break he is a great player to have in and around the villa team.

Lerner. How does a player's wages come in to it at all, why do people think that because players get paid so much, they are whingers if they get upset or complain about anything. Does anyone really think that matters when your on the bench, or get taken off early, or if you lose a game. Does anyone really think that Reo-Coker should have been thinking when he was coming off "damn, i've been subbed, but at least i've got a big pile of cash at home" no, i don't think so mate. Northcliffbandit i agree with you totally and i think that was the only reason Sidwell was chosen to stay on.

I like Sidwell. He's a decent chap. But he's not good enough for a mid-table Premiership side, let alone one that has hopes of being more than that. Reo Coker however is a player who, as ric112 suggests, could go to the World Cup. However, I think it's only possible if O'Neill recognises that he has to be our first choice midfielder (Petrov doesn't offer enough going backwards or forwards to be first choice).

I agree, Nigel Reo-Coker is an extremely important player for us this year, and he didn't deserve to be bought off... possibly the better of our midfielders on the day. Maybe it was purely for the slightly higher goal threat of sidders

Sidders is more of a goal threat ?!?!? I have seen Reo-coker in the box more often than sidders... And reo-coker actually is quite pacy so when we counter attack he often can keep up and joins in the attack. His distribution is always the big let down, but he really does a fantastic job of shielding the back four - I actually think the improvement in our defense is due to alot of his work... Just wish Petrov would take more control of the game, he is one of the players with the vision and touch to send through our strikers... Gotta see him in more advanced positions...

Rooney is a sulking**** aswell,His wages come into it because yes be dissapointed in getting brought off but sitting in the dug out and walking off the pitch with a face on is self important bull*****,He has just picked up another 40 odd grand for playing football and he sulks like a litte kid,Maybe he should get his head out of his own arse and have a look around,Then he would realise he has ***** all to sulk about.
