Ashley Young - The Iceman!

The Ice Man Commeth

The Mirror has some interesting quotes from Ashley Young today who has spoken to the press about being kicked to high heaven.

Young, in the England squad for the games v Slovenia and the crunch tie against Croatia says he has to go home after each game with ice packs to put on wherever he has been kicked.

Ashley Young

Some say that Young dives too much, and maybe he does a bit BUT from where I sit by the touchline, you can hear the thuds from tackles flying in, if I was him I'd go over before being kicked to be honest!

Ash, who is hoping to increase his five cap total, said:

'That is something you are always going to have to deal with being kicked and you just have to bounce back from that. I am used to being kicked now I just get up and get on with it.'

He also feels that Villa have put behind them the Wigan 'performance' and says that Villa are now making a good start to the season with wins over Liverpool and Fulham to add to the home win v Rapid Vienna.

Just hope some clumsy player doesnt' take his 'treatment' too far and break the lads legs, some of the tackles on him are awful.

The lad needs to stop diving. Before he started that ***** he looked like he was going to be world class. Now instead of beating the man and looking to keep going he beats the man and waits for a chance to go down.Im not saying he doesn`t get kicked a bit but we all know the score if we are honest.

I was his biggest fan until recently, he shows a desire to go down rather than go on, verging on petulance, that someone dare go near him. he could be a very very good player, but he needs to get back to the way he played at the start of last season and stop hobbling like he has has his legs hit with a sword, after a shoulder barge. come on ash your english man, english dont dive, unless of course your scouse!!!!

Yes, Gabby has certainly muscled up...! One thing roehe is Ash is still only young and learning, nowhere near the finished article, think he is at a good place to develop him as well and obviously has the eye of the England manager. He'll have times where he looks to stall but I'm sure he'll end up a class act... he shows many great signs already. To be fair, being pitchside, some of the challenges are more than shoulder barges and he isn't the biggest lad, my wrists are wider than his ankles!

"he beats the man and waits for a chance to go down" lerneravfc Well if I remember correctly against Rapid, he beat a man, got taken down, got back up, ran into the area and won a penalty... Did he quit on that one? I mean I agree, he seems to go down easily, but I don't question his work ethic, he runs hard and he does look to put balls in from the wing

TheYank, you totally took the words from my mouth. I was really impressed with the way he refused to stay down and carried on into the box. Excellent piece of refereeing as well, played the advantage perfectly. Just a shame he couldn't tuck the pen away. :(

I fear he is the kind of player who may have a short career or may get a nasty injury and never be quite the same again. Hope I am wrong. I never got over Gary Shaw. Such a waste of talent. Another worry is that if he continues to go down "easily" sometimes, the refs will see this and protect him less by letting bad tackes go without a card.

All our lads seem to be filling out, the gym work they're doing is intense. If Ash can put some timber on the defenders will have a much harder time getting him to go down. (I think some of his going down is self preservation, but also some is a little soft)
