'If It's Football, It's Vital'

Thanks To Randy Lerner

Well, the transfer window is over and I for one am delighted! It is great for my business I'll be honest, we as a network do get a spike in the summer (especially when the weather is so bad... long may it rain!) and in January, but the flipside of that is things get so 'heavy' and the discussions can be very heated over links that are only mentioned in the press and aren't reality.

Anyway, looking at the players in and out over this summer and since Martin O'Neill came in, I am sure we can all name our favourites, the players we'd never have signed and of course 'the ones that got away'. We all have different ideas and can so easily say 'we should have signed so and so' because we don't have to actually try to do it in reality!

The only opinion that matters player wise is the man who is in charge of the team, THE MANAGER. We talk a good game, he has to actually achieve a good game and will be judged on what he has done at the end of each season. Not a job I'd like, although the wages would come in handy, I just couldn't take the stress though and whether I agree with this manager, the last one, the one before etc etc, the one thing I am very thankful for as a Villa fan is the man at helm, one Mr Randy Lerner who I think has brought Villa forward in leaps and bounds from the previous incumbent.

Off the field - something some fans try to use as a stick to beat these guys with despite the business side, ground improvements, Holte pub refurbishment being NOTHING to do with player budgets - we are in good shape and will continue to improve. Look at the new Holte Suite and Sky Lounge, totally fab, look at what was soon to be a demolished building 'The Holte' that is now a beacon of class as you walk up to Villa Park as opposed to a boarded up wreck. Imagine bringing sponsors to Villa Park now... these are the improvements which will pay dividends over the years.

Then we have on the field issues.... The one thing, whether the fans are cheering or booing that I am delighted about now is that by and large, the focus is where a fans focus should be, the games, the manager, the players. We'll never agree on all that, football fans never do, that is what makes the game so great. But the vast majority must surely see the funding that has been put in place at Villa and that Randy has put his money where his mouth is?

I'd just like to say 'Thanks Randy, you've certainly repaid the faith I as a fan put in you and many thousands like me'. Yup, I know, some will think I'm being a lickspittle or a yes sir, no sir type, well, I'm not, I'm just thankful that no more protests are required, what us as fans asked for is being done (all the issues like the signage, the improvements around the ground, the Holte, the classy touches, the improvement in the staff's 'lot' at Villa have all been done and there is now talk of stand improvements or re-building, we are in for a real treat I think!) To put it bluntly I'm thankful that I'm - and the rest involved over the long years - are no longer needed as a 'rent a gob' or 'rent a quote' against the former Chairman.

More to the point, I'm thankful that Randy has provided the funds again this season. Ok, I wanted different players, my fantasy football team - which I'm bottom of at the moment by the way ... point proved?! - would have included a striker BUT it seems pretty clear, Manchester City aside, that Randy has again outspent the rest of the clubs. Second season in a row we've been amongst the top net spenders as well from what I can see?

So for those that say that the money isn't there or that Randy isn't providing the funds... think again. We aren't doing a 'Chelsea' but then we never were going to, Randy and his crew said that VERY early on, even before any bids went in, but they said they were going to respect the club and build it back up. Well, I for one am a happy bunny with that side of things.

For me, the manager issue isn't totally clear, I want to be convinced by MON, I really do. At the moment I'm not but if we push on this season I'll be as happy as Larry as I'm sure most will. He is the manager and will remain so this season, so maybe for all the doubters or the outright negi's amongst us, maybe it is time to down tools (yeah, not sure what I mean there either!) and just see how the season goes, maybe call an end to the rage until January and then see whether we are in the top ten, top six or even the top four... and then again at the end of the season?

He's been given the money, he has said all along he has the backing of Randy, unless he says otherwise and the evidence seems to be in the favour of Randy, then we can surely agree on one thing, the foundations are built, the youth set up is doing a great job, the funds have been provided and many many millions have been spent to assemble the team to push on this season. Over to the manager to show what he can do with the players he's assembled - oh and lets not forget the players also owe a duty to the manager to repay the faith he has shown in them.

On the rough figures (most transfers are undisclosed so I've gone on press talk for rough indications: All Of MON's Transfers At Aston Villa ) we've had around 35million of sales and over 120 million spent and that is before you take into account the loan fee's, signing on fees, wages etc. Roughly 85million net isn't bad going is it?

If we keep building like this and can continue to introduce the youth players from our ever excellent Youth Academy, we are going to be in with a chance of getting where we want to be at some point and we'll have done it the right way.

COME ON THE VILLA....

I'm happy with the squad and will be even happier when Downing is fit. Totally agree that Randy has put us in a different league in terms of what he has done off the field. Guess its down to the fans to get behind the team through the bad times as well as the good now(which we haven't been very good at recently)!UTV

Couldn't have put it any better. Well said Fear. Am I allowed to say 'can't wait for 48's post bearing in mind he wanted to hand over Randys war chest to Jurgen Klinsmann'. Thats right!! For those that do not remember, the anti M'ON avfc48 has felt bitter ever since we never got 'his' first choice. I could probably do with reminding where Klinsmann is at the moment.

To be fair Voice, avfc48 has been very vocal in his support of Randy, so think you'll get nothing but agreement from him + not every thread has to be turned into a negative does it?

Nice piece JF, totally agree with what you wrote. Just a quick note to others, without 48's fickleness, half the discussions on here would peter out after 5 or 6 comments and not stir half the passionate replies, right or wrong!

Great article Fear. Randy goes about his business in a superb way...I just wanted ONE exciting flair player, someone like Falcao from River. But I'm happy, think Downing, Delph and Warnock are very good signings.

Agreed; wouldn't swap the chairman/regime for any one else's, or the manager come to that (even though our summer's dealings have left me pretty deflated!).

One of the best posts I've read in a long time... we have progressed continually under the current on and off field regimes... Whilst we can't control the progress made by other clubs, we have strived to be better each season, which is all we can really do

so, the killer question, is your squad better now than this time last year?

Some of us may have doubts about the manager's ability to spend money wisely, but I think pretty much all of us are agreed, Randy's da man!

Merlin. Yes without a doubt. Barry and Laursen are losses but we now have 2 or 3 good players for every position. Without Europe to hinder us I expect us to be challenging for the top 4 with Spuds, Redscouse, Bluescouse, The Arse and Manure. I expect for you to be battling with Man Citeh for the title.

I agree, in an absolute ideal world another front man/creative midfielder would have been another player I would like to have seen arrive but you cant knock the money spent since the great man has been at the helm. Whether the players are the ones I would have wanted doesnt matter, the fact is I never thought I would see the day when we was spending over 10m on the final day of the TW on 2 centre backs......

Randy Lerner is easily the Best Chairman in today's football world of Chief Exec's, Directors Of Football ... etc, etc. (only Steve Gibson comes close.)

Well said Fear. Good article - hope Randy reads it. The only part I would argue with is that I think has actually gone beyond what we expected in things like the Holte, Bodymore, and other upgrades. The quality of finish and design is so much more than I expected that any new stand will be very interesting to see. Thankfully, it doesn't seem that the credit crunch hit him too much does it.

After so many frustrating transfer windows you'd have thought that we would know by now to trust MoN. Some of the comments here and on other Villa sites have been quite insulting to our club and personnel. Are we happy? Is the squad better. Yes and Yes. I still think 3rd or 4th.

As lurman said, I am proud to say I'm a Villa fan which, over the years has certainly not always been the case. I'm proud of Villa Park. Every aspect of the ground looks pure class. From the Holte Pub/Suite to the Italian crafted Holte End Mosaic down to the reduced advertising around the pitch/stadium. We look from the outside looking in like a classy outfit... Because we are. Thank you Randy. I never thought I would love an American man called Randy but do you know what. I love you Randy!! ;)

There's only one Randy Lerner, One Randy Lerner. Thanks for your continued investment Mr Lerner and long may it continue. We always had pride whether we was up or down, but now we can truly say we have style and class. Not to mention our huge charity links with Acorns! A very very nice touch that. UTV.

Villa have been are and always will be a great club. Under Randy every season seems to take us closer to being a "Top 4" club. I think the biggest problem is Randy is doing it without bullying other clubs and some people (Me included) got a bit impatient but you can just feel we are destined to one day be consistent trophy winners .. Randy is doing it with style

Don't get ne wrong i do think we have a great squad now, but i just can't see why we never replaced Barry, we needed a creative central midfielder to create chances through the middle, and also to give the wingers excellent service, we haven't got that, and we have Agbonlahor who is a good striker, but will burn out half way through the season, and Carew is bound to get injured, then we have to place all our hope on Heskey... Harewood seems to be going to Newcastle on loan, and well not bringing in a striker or a creative player i think will cost us, i cannot see us getting a top four place without a clinical striker.

Great post Fear and some great points too. I would also like to thank Randy and his team for a the work and investment they have done. I do believe that the squad is stronger than last year even if some people have doubts about the starting 11. ( i think there's a general consensus on the best 11 but thats at MON's feet). Credit where it's due. I'm buzzin personally and think the people under estimating the Villa this season are underestimating the youngsters coming through, that's where a lot of my excitement lies. We have some real quality poking their heads through.

Excellent read Fear, it's nice to read something positive for a change. I fsometimes ind it hard to comprehend that people have such short memories and that just over 3 years ago, yep, it was just 3 years ago, we had someone at the helm who was stripping the club of money and assets could see no positives with the club we love. Now, after 2 succesive top 6 finishes we sometimes get a little carried away and expect more. I hope for more and believe that year on year we are closing the gap, a gap that was previously a gulf!! Well done Randy, thanks for your support and long may it continue!!

Nice one JF, agree totally, like you, not the signings i would have liked but looking at the squad list, we now have cover for every position and i would go so far as to say decent cover, if you would have offered me that four years ago i would have been happy. As a club we have progressed very nicely,Thanks Randy!

i hate to say it but as an outsider looking in i do not see any improvements on last year. New faces yes but more quality? Barry V Downing = Barry. Laursen V Dunne = Laursen. I honest cant see howyou have a squad good enough to prevent your annual slide post christmas. I may be wrong and am not looking for a fight, just an observation.
