Shorey Deal Falls Through

SSN are reporting that Nicky Shorey's switch to Pompey has fallen through at the last hurdle. Makes sense really cause if it was on we'd have heard about it by now!

After numerous former rumours about our diminutive left back leaving this window, Sky Sports are claiming that he did travel to Fratton Park on Tuesday to discuss personal terms and undergo a medical - however it is unclear if that was last Tuesday or today?

The deal was meant to be a season long loan, and although this makes sense in some senses with the apparent soon return of Freddy and the recent signing of Warnock, his performances of late haven't been like a player who was about to leave and there are no doubt still questions over Bouma that it would make more sense to answer before hocking out Shorey - unless of course there was a 24 hr recall option?

Sky ends the report stating that Shorey was unable to reach an agreement with Pompey but that it had nothing to do with personal terms it was the 'result of other factors'.

Other factors, are their concerns about Bouma? Has Shorey's recent form led Monny to tell him it's his position to lose?

Either way we win here. It makes no sense signing Warnock and letting Shorey go when the whole idea is to build a squad with at least 2 players competing for that position.

Nicky hasn't really done much wrong lately and if Monny wants to rotate this season we certainly had to keep the players we had given our new recruits will be classed by some as 'indifferent'.

good, glad it has fallen through, we are meant to be adding numbers not getting rid of even more players...

I'm certainly far from unhappy that this proposed move has fallen through. As JF so rightly says, aren't we supposed to be attempting to build a squad, not operating a one in-one out policy? Since his recall to the first team starting line up at Old Trafford, last March I think it was, he's turned in some consistent and impressive showings, despite the pressure on him to perform to impress a manager who clearly doesn't rate him. With serious question marks hovering around the immediate future of Wilfred Bouma, it hardly makes sense to send Shorey packing at this time, and I certainly dont want to have to see Luke Young filling in at left full back throughout this current campaign. Glad you're staying Nicky, Good Luck to you.

would have been a strange exit for sure, you can't really build a squad by bringing in players then selling or loaning them! I quite like Shorey, not the greatest in defence but he gets forward well. Interesting to see how quickly Wilf is also in contention, surely even when fit it will take him a good while to be up to match fitness.

Im glad I like him and think he's getting better all the time. Freddie is far from match fit. so let warnock try to take Shorey's place, it all good for villa competition for places is what we want.

Ditto v happy about this. I've just seen some bloke from Portsmouth talking on SSN and he has confirmed it was because he wanted assurances that he would be a guaranteed starter which, as this bloke said, no manager will ever promise a player he is a guaranteed starter. Not unless you're Ronaldo or someone.
