Well weve really only spent about 20m this window which isnt that much nowadays. We've got enough squad players now so in theory every transfer window from now should onnly see the arrival of players that are better than our current ones......otherwise whats the point??

barcelona? just bought some ukrainian defender for and this is just the figure i remember but something like 15 million , and didnt they spend like 40 million on imbrahimovic as well as sending eto'o to inter as well?
benhulston91
Not sure why people think we would sign Dunne and Upson? Collins is perfectly legitmate for a 4th choice CB. Dunne is a starter with Cuellar and Davies fighting out for the second spot. Do you really think MON would have 20mil in CBS on the bench if we had Upson and Dunne starting? Get real folks! Good piece of business me thinks. Don't know much about the Collins lad, but he has my 100%. And he's an...international hahah.

The Guardian reckons he's signed too http://tinyurl.com/muysuc I think we've done pretty well overall this transfer window. I, for one, don't buy into this 'wow player' argument. It's how a team gels that's most important and with a stronger squad - which we have now - I think we will progress this season.

Gotta agree with cropley. We need to be realistic. We have now got strength in depth across all positions. Especially in midfield where we have downing (when fit), delph, andc gardner all waiting for their chance. Don't forget ourtalented kids either! 4 out and 7 in i make it, but now we've got some half decent talent sitting on the bench.

Cropley we don't have a clinical striker and we don't have a creative central midfielder... I can't see the midfield scoring loads either, so if Villa are really lucky we'll get 6th place.. and what does that mean ? we get into Europe.... then we'll throw it away again, buying average players trying to break the top 4.

I agree with cropley and adam, despite the lack of quick summer signings I feel that O'Neill has spent really well to be honest, considering the sort of fees being spent nowadays, 24m on lescott for example. We got to remember, we've got downing to come back, theres a player that has the potential to be a real favourite here at villa park. UTV
benhulston91
People need to lighten up on here, I think they're both good signings. Remember Ian Taylor wasn't a wow signing, nor was Southgate, Teale and I'm sure many people would have thought McGrath was a suicidal signing at the time. Then you can look at foreign players like Balaban, Ivo Stas (remember him), and others like Sergei Rebrov, Veron, Kezman, Cisse, Crespo, Shevchenko who flopped. I'm not saying every foreigner will flop, but struggle to understand some peoples obsessions. Also, people may criticise MON's transfer record, but has he not, with the teams he's put together taken us to 2 consecutive top 6 finishes, even threatening the top 4 last season like no other team has in recent years. Give the guys a chance and stop criticising before they've even pulled on a shirt. Up the villa.

You would think so son_of_cher, but what we will actually do is spend the first half of the next transfer window selling some of these players and the second half replacing them, still it does make it appear we are spending money, so all good then

Not sure people really are criticising the players longman, they get the support when on the pitch (apart from the few numpty boo boys) just some followed MON's comments re: quality signings and were maybe hoping for a bit more. Time will tell now, transfer window closed, we'll find out where we are by January window opens!

"Just one argentinian youngster and i'd be happy" - does that have anything to do with football, Olof? :o)

olofthegreat.... o'neill would get so criticisied for buying a player from argentina if he turned out to be a waste of space. Just coz they are argentinian, brazilian, spanish etc doesnt mean they are any good, even if they are prospects over there.

Bouma is an international CB with the Dutch team, if he's fit surely he can also be back up with Beye. That means we have 3 left backs, 2 right backs and at least 8 potential CBs if you include the young 'uns. Out cup runneth over!

I actually think we now have a squad that will compete at the top end of the table and is big enough to withstand the demands of a long season, once the Dunne deal is confirmed. Even by reaching a cup final we will play 7 or 8 games less than last year. We have a team, not a group of individuals and in football the team is always bigger than any individual. I have a bit of the feeling that we had a the start of the 80 81 season. If we break into the top 4 (and that is now a definite possibility) the next players to come will be amongst the best in the world. And if that happened then ric112, olaf, 48, shaneblack, viila 4 ever (jeez that is some name for somebody who wants to moan) and all the other moaners would still find something to moan about. It is unity that can make or break a club. It would be pleasing to come to VP and feel that everybody was pulling in the same direction rather than waiting to pounce on the first bad pass. Make no mistake, the doomsayers and moaners ruin the enjoyment for the vast majortiy of good Villa supporters. And when the positive fans stop coming because of the negativity of a sizeable minority, then you can all be as happy as pigs in muck as the club implodes. Then you will have something to moan about and it will be your own fault.

I agree with the majority of positive comments on here, The defence that O'neill has put together really oozes quality now. Davies will be a top centreback but he's not been fit since January with his shoulder hanging off. The main thing is you have to look at the signings as a whole and say MO'N has done a fantastic job in adding depth to the squad with real quality, something we were sorely lacking last season. We had no plan B and teams eventually found us out, with Downing and Delph, possibly Albrighton we really have some different attacking options and can spring a few suprises by playing Milner, Delph and Young in various positions rather than just out wide. Similarly with the defence, what we lacked when Laursen got injured was that defender who could win balls, and calm the backline a bit. Cuellar and Davies are too similar, athletic but not aerially that dominant although Cuellar has shown to be brilliant so far. I was initially suprised at the sale of Knight, but looking back, many of our goals were conceded by him needlessly diving into tackles too early, getting skinned and leaving a gaping hole for the opposition to score all too often. Signing Dunne and Colllins he's essentially signed a Laursen replacement (tho imo he's not as good) and a backup for that type of defender. Warnock is the player MO'N wished Shorey was, hats off to the Irishman once again
