'If It's Football, It's Vital'

Villa confirm Collins bid has been agreed

Not much on the site apart from the facts, no idea what the fee is, hopefully its no more than £4 million. We do need a centre back but is Collins the man for the job.

He has made 3 appearances this season for West Ham and in his Hammers career has scored 2 goals.

Why do I put myself through it?! Every transfer window I read all the gossip, check the internet, TV, radio, newspapers for links to players that will set Villa Park alight.....then we agree a fee for Collins, surplus of West Ham, London. Might be a good player, but it got me thinking....when did we last sign a 'bums on seats' exciting player at B6? The rational part of me says 'We are building a team for the future (etc), but I still crave the 'Villa sign Kaka' type headline.....

Was talking about this the other day and completely agree, i cant remember a player coming into Villa Park that you could saw WOW. Even when we have speant £12 million on Milner or £12 million on Downing, you wouldnt really be able to say WOW. It just hasnt happened. Their have been plenty of players available this year, Tuncay and Huth are just two of many. Instead we get Beye and maybe Dunne. Huth is a much better younger player.

Juddy, the last 'bums on seats' player was probably Young or, if he was fit, downing. THing is, O'neills been building a team since he got here, so the majority of what he set out to do is probably in place. makes you wonder who he would've gone for if Laursen hadn't retired.

might be but O'Neil only buys who he wants, he wanted Milner a couple of years ago. Didnt get him and then waited a year and got the man then.

I just like anyone else would like a WOW signing, but o'neill has developed wow players. look at milner, young, carew etc. if we signed any of these players from another club after their recent form then they would be classed as WOW players!

I don't agree that Young was a bums on seats signing, I think the vast majority thought we had overpaid for somebody that most people had never heard of. I'm racking my brains for the last 'big' signing and all I keep coming up with is Collymore and Ginola....surely we have signed somebody recently who was more of a crowd pleaser.....surely?

Yeah understand what you mean arc1988 but we always have to wait for the players develop, weather it only be a month or 6 months it would just be nice for once if we could get a van der Vart or a player like that. Man City have shown that money talks, players will go to teams not in the CL. Im not say spend anything like the stupid amount of money like £ity but at least give the fans something to get exited about

I like James Collins. He seems to do OK everytime I see him. Not even a very good start to the season for Shorey could save him after his show petulance last season. I reckon O'Neill sees Delph as back-up left back (if Bouma isn't fit.)

I'm sure O'Neil sees everybody as a back up left back, including Guzan. Towards the end of last season O'Neil tried to get me playing left back and everybody knows I play the meandering right sided, wont track back midfield role.

The last WOW signing was Peter Schmeichel! Before that was Ginola!! Didnt turn out too great!! Thought Sneijder or Van Der Vaart would be - but is VDV still on scrapheap with Van Nistelrooy, Drenthe and M. Diarra with no squad numbers!?

So we have gone for the CHEAP OPTION. Upson is the class defender not collins who? Great signing MON. MON when r we going to get class players, never i guess. Van der vaart, defour, drenthe. and maybe a class forward oh we don't need 1, we have goal scoring Heskey. what a joke.

Now I know I am mighty naive and probably a little stupid, how about hijacking the West Ham 6 million bid for Chamakh, we could use a class striker right?
TheYank
This is a panic buy, Dunne would have gone some way to replacing Laursen, but not sure what Collins offers us.

Calm down guys and girls. James Collins is worth every penny of £5m. We got £8m for Anton Ferdinand and Collins is a much better player. There is not a single fan here at Upton Park who wants to see him go, but we're skint and are having to juggle the books. You won't be disappointed with him. He may not be a glamourous buy but he'll certainly tighten up your defence and give 100%.

Im new at this, but could the Aston Blogger please explain to me how they know for sure that Robert Huth is 'a lot better' than James Collins? Just how many of Collins' games did you watch last year? I only ask because Im as disappointed as the next man that we have signed seemingly 'ordinary' players...(even though each one, when fit, is a full international). Now, our manager might have a few issues spending money, or indeed attracting WOW players (although Milner, Young, Reo Coker and Carew have all WOW'ed me at various times), but isnt one of MON's qualities that he gets the best out of so called 'ordinary' players? Personally, and this is just my opinion, I think Collins will do us just fine. I dont expect all four senior centre halfs to be around in 18 months time, hopefully by then clark and lowry will have forced thier way in, meaning we can sell on, one, if not two of the four. And maybe, with the fans backing, some luck, and lots of endeavour and hardwork, in those 18 months those players will get us into the promised land, and we can attract those WOW players we all crave. Make no mistake, Im sure Sneijder would have siutably WOW'ed everyone....but.....and Im sorry to say this.....it aint gonna happen!! The day we persuade top class international talent to leave the most successful club in the world.......as well as the climate and lifestyle of Spain or Italy......for 'Broken Britain' and the joy that is B6...... is the day after we win the premier league!

With the greatest respect Aston Blogger you cannot tell what a player is like from the edited highlights of MOTD. I watch Collins most weeks on the pitch and I can assure you he won't let you down. As for whether Huth is worth more I have no idea. All I do know is Collins will do a good job for you and for God's sake give the guy a chance. He is no West Ham reject. We were forced to sell someone and he drew the short straw. If Upson had gone for the £15m the club wanted then Collins would still be there and not too many would be grumbling. As for O'Neill, he is a top manager and Lerner is a first class owner, but the sad fact is there are many good teams (Villa and Everton included) who can only dream of a top four finish. It just is not going to happen with the current top four plus Spurs and Man City who each have squads worth well over £200m. The likes of Villa, Everton and West Ham will only ever dream of a possible top six finish while this current financial madness continues. What's more at Upton Park we can only dream of signing the likes of Downing so get real and support your club. How long ago was it that you were utter *****e under Ellis. Short memories I think. At least you now have a club that is run in a way that most of us hold up as a first class example of how a club should be run.

Thanks Rotherfield Hammer. There are a good number of villa supporters out here who believe our cup is definitely half full rather than empty and have no short memories of what it was like under DOL and before. 6th in the league twice, looking solid in the peace cup, some solid signings, we're doing alright and I am most certainly optimistic that we can hit top 6 again and with a bit of luck, crash top 4. Good luck for the new season.

Why is it all doom and gloom on here today FFS? Why is everyone talking about a WOW player too? Have we not all been complaining that we've got a threadbare squad and need defenders? Yes. So what has MON done... He's gone and bought a good solid defender to challenge for a first team spot. You have to think that if we sign Dunne it will be him and Davies/Cuellar for the starting role and Collins fighting to break into that. I've seen the guy play quite a few times and he seems pretty solid. We've therefore lost Zat Knight and replaced him with a better player. Job done? I honestly thought Bentley would have been our WOW player this window but MON maybe didn't fancy taking on his ego after the drink driving incident.

Face it we do not have the kudos to attract big name players. We need to stop doing a Forest and harping on about the past glories and focus on now. We haven't won any descent silverware in years and finished it average places in the league for donkey's years. Our reputation is mud compared to other teams. We are not going to attract wow players whether it is Martin NO'Deal in charge or not!

As we are remined everyday on these sites, we're all intitled to an opinion, and Im happy to come on here and read everyones. But I have to say that I'd take Collins over Huth any day, and Im not just going from edited highlights on MOTD, or the stats on Wikipedia! Collins is solid, has the mental strength to deal with and come back from severe injury, and maintains his place at international level. Huth, capable though he is, has had many niggly injuries that have severely limited his appearances over the last 3 years, and as hasnt played for Germany since 2006, not to mention poor form helping middlesbrough go down, some would suggest that he has struggled to get back to his best. Stoke have gambled on him being fit to help them, they already have wilkinson, faye, shawcross, sonko and higginbottom (plus thier reserves/acadamy....I would argue that Villa couldnt take the risk on Huth, we needed someone who could stay fit (barring a disaster) and keep the other 3 seniors on their toes.

Half of you dont remember the "bad old days", and like to bask in the rose tinted glasses glory that we were once Euro champions. Well I got news for ya, footballs goalposts have shifted! We cant compete on wages - FACT, we cant compete with transfer fees - FACT, we aint in London - FACT. So let the manager have time to build a team to do us proud and lets get off his back, in 1970 we were in Division3, 10 years or so later we were Champions and we all know the rest. Ron Saunders didnt do it overnight with WOW players.... ( You can hear Ron who cant ya ?? lol )

Wouldn't want Kaka at Villa Park. Would rather have Hokey-Cokey on current form. "Wow" signings are all relative. Anyone remember the disaster that was Juan Sebastian Veron? He was a "Wow" signing at Man U. Ditto, Robinho at Citeh. Vieira, Cantona, Schmeichel, Keane, Zola and Frank Lampard weren't exactly "Wow" signings when they signed for Arsenal, Man U and Chelsea. All of them are now PL legends and household names. I could probably add a few others to that lot too. Gordan Cowans, Dennis Mortimer, Nigel Spink et al are "Wow" players to me. They won the European Cup. Didn't Real Madrid Galactico's sell Makalele (then relatively unknown) to buy Beckham (The worlds most famous footballer)? Correct me if I'm wrong, but that was probably the worst transfer decision of modern times. Keeping the superb Fernando Morientes on the bench, to accommodate "superstar" (Brazilian) Ronaldo, was equally crazy. Were the fans at the Bernabau happy? Did Madrid win truckloads of silverware? Negative on both counts. MON isn't perfect, true. However he does have decades of experience in the game. None of us know the size of the transfer budget available to him. We have to assume that he is buying the players he feels will bring success to the club, or at least take it forward. I wouldn't want to be a Citeh fan for anything. The Citeh/Chelsea approach is the path to football oblivion (just ask Leeds). The only "wow" that matters is the wow of success. A league or CL title.

If collins is that good then why is no one else after him, why have we never metioned him as a player we would like to sign. I'm one of Martin O'Neil's biggest fans, but his transfer skills are quite poor. Niether am i just going on MOTD highlights as well as this watching premiership games week in week out, being a season ticket holder and having spoke to west ham fans. If he was as good as upson then why is he alot less money. Zola doesnt think the same as some villa fans and he spends day in day out with both the players. I'm really happy we have someone in but for the last 3 years Martin has promised top quality players and 50% have been that but the other 50 are far from it. Hesky, salifou, knight, harewood, sutton......

Thanks Rotherfield Hammer, hope you are right, never paid a great deal of attention to Collins but quite often you don't to defenders do you? The moaning isn't really about Collins, more a lack of signings despite last season stalling because of a lack of numbers.

We all need to consider this transfer window across the board. Apart from Man City and Spurs who has been spending? Certainly not the likes of Everton and West Ham. Over the last year the Euro is 20% down on sterling so the cost of paying an overseas player has leapt which is why they are all moving to Spain or Italy and not here. Who have Man U bought? Or Liverpool and Chelsea? Name me one 'glamourous' transfer to ANY British Club this summer. Cheer up everyone. You have a great Manager, you've signed Downing, you've just beaten Liverpool 3:1 at Anfield and are averaging two points a game this season (the same as Arsenal). I know I am an outsider, but being objective no matter how hard I try I do not see Villa Park in meltdown. That's it. I'm off. Thanks for putting up with me and have a good season.
