THE FINAL COUNTDOWN! Transfer Talk

At last, it is nearly over...!

Several reports including the Birmingham Mail claim that Manchester City captain Richard Dunne will have a medical at Villa today before completing his £6million move to Villa. The delay, as widely reported, has apparently been his pay off from Man City which some reports say could be as high as £6million as he was due for a testimonial for 10 years service next year.

According to the Daily Express West Ham have fended off would be suitors (including Villa) for Matthew Upson by putting a £15million price tag on the defender.

Sky Sports have 'sources' claiming that Nicky Shorey is off to Portsmouth on a season-long loan deal.

Janine Self of The Sun Villa are about to complete the £5million signing of West Ham centre-back James Collins (West Ham Fans Opinion on JC)

The Sun also claim if we can't tie up the deal for Dunne Villa will return for Matthew Upson. I find that one harder to believe as they would then be left short of centre backs, something - cash strapped or not - no sensible club would do...!

One we've been linked with all summer, Spurs winger David Bentley is apparently off to Manchester City in a swap deal involving Martin Petrov.

Curtis Davies said in the Halifax Courier (!) on the nearly Dunne deal that he is surprised that City are letting him leave as he has been 'up there' with the very best of City players.

'He has been a stalwart. He has played with a lot of different centre-half's but he has always looked good. It is strange they are looking to let him go - but he would be a good addition here. There loss would be our gain because his experience is untold - but has still got enough in the tank to play for a few more years.' He also says Dunne is 'old style' being 'solid and strong'.

Any surprises due do you think?!?!? No, must admit, nor me!

Not upset to see this window close, we can get back to a bit of normality and get on with the season. Gutted they've not brought a striker like Bent in but hey ho...! Any last minute surprises I wonder? Can't think of many that might all of a sudden become available other than maybe Jenas if Martin Petrov is going to Spurs?

Maybe if Milner, Young, Gabby, (+ Albrigton and Downing) are allowed to continue with the freedom that they have we won't need an out and out goalscorer like Bent? Its always nice to have the option but we can try and go in for one in Jan if needed. Just a thought!

No decent club would be left short of centre backs? Well we went a whole year without a rightback, then the following season went a whole year with a rightback at left back, then this season we started with an injured centre back and no cover. So West Ham might well be as crazy as us..........

I know lots of people want another forward but if we're sticking with 4-5-1/4-3-3 then I really don't see the point unless it is someone that is better than what we already have (now now, leave Emile alone!) but it may see us go for another midfielder. I doubt it, though. After all, again, it isn't worth it unless they are better than what we have. The only place we definitely needed to add was central defence & as it appears we are doing that today, the only type of signings that would be worthwhile are players of a better quality than what is already in place.

Nope, I don't think there'll be any surprises in store ... But I think MON has done some decent business in this (difficult) transfer window. Downing/Delph/Beye/Warnock have all been decent signings and have given us more strength in depth. The only thing that's dissapointed me is, why the hell did we only get £12m for Barry, looking at some of the other ridiculous transfer fees, surely he was worth more than that ??

He only had 12 months left on his contract Damo, otherwise we probably would have held out for more (like we did 12 months previous)

Why do i feel like we wont sign anyone else? Not trying to be a negative nancy and i hope im wrong, and i may very well be, but the Dunne situation sounds like it could drag on. hes trying to get compensated for missing out on his guaranteed testimonial which wouldve been next year as well as the remaining two years on his contract, apparently hes after somewhere between 2-6m. id be happy with seeing Dunne and Collins for depth coming in, and maybe a surprise in Jenas signing, if not now in January maybe, spurs apparently bringing in kranjcar for 2m, crazy bargain. Hopefully with these numbers in the squad, and the possible blessing-in-disguise crashing out of europe maybe we can push on up the ladder and have a good cup run this year

I hope we can recall Shorey from the loan deal at any point otherwise we're down to a single left back again until Bouma's fit. Shorey's played really well recently and towards the back end of last season so MON definitely doesn't fancy him. Would love to see another midfielder come in - someone who can open up a defence with one pass but doubt it as we currently have Reo-Coker, Petrov, Sidwell, Gardner, Delph, Osbourne, Salifou all vying for 2 or 3 sports in the centre (and Milner once Downing is fit).

Yep, I know that Sheriff, but Manchester Moneybags have been throwing money around like it's going out of fashion, and regardless of much of a contract was left, i think if Mark Hughes really wanted Barry, then Villa could of upped the price a bit, just like Everton managed to do with Lescott !

Lescott didn't have a year left though did he. Plus to be honest, I think MON was glad to get rid of him, I for one was pleased it happened so early.

Are you lot still banging on about Barry? We got a good price for a player that was told he could leave. As for new signings, Roy Keane bought players like they were going out of fashion and all that got Sunderland was a load ofcplayers that never got a game and an unmanageable wage bill. We need to win games and if the players we have can do that then we are sorted.

GD - Damo asked the question, I responded. Don't think it's really 'banging on about him'. Anyway I agree, Roy Keane at Sunderland's 'Championship Manager' approach isn't what we need, we need cover at centre-half, we're doing that, then anything else needs to be better than what we have or not at all. As I keep saying, the small squad thing is a myth once the appropriate numbers at the back are sorted.

General, Wasn't banging on about individuals, it was more to do with the sums of money that seem to be involved in some deals, that have made this particular transfer window very difficult for MON, and I thought the Barry deal was a good example of that, that's all. and The Sheriff was good enough to debate the point !

I would not want a player that we sign to be the main signal that we are challenging for a top four spot i know many fans would have lked a tevez signing, indeed im slightly excited by the same thought but one player shouldn't signal are intent..I'd prefer the squad to show that and they have done when we get behind them so lets welcome collins with optimism...and from where I'm looking, we havent got a bad squad at all..when everyone comes back from injuries, i.e downing, bouma and Young, we will look alot better. Ashley will play a rooney role this season so giver us plenty options tatically so any late editions are welcome. I think its strange about shorey though seems he's off to pompey, just showing some good form..saying that I think he has been unsettled since arriving.

with the signings we have bought in and the youth players coming through the only surprise signing would be a big centre back like hangeland or upson. we are covered for full backs, we have a glut of central midfielders and as has been said again and again if we persist with 4-3-3 there is no need for anyone but someone quicker than gabby. And i think in the case of a gabby injury its 4-2-2 time... sadly...

Really hope the Shorey thing doesn't happen. He's been getting better every game and his delivery is way better than warnock's.

Isn't it all jolly exciting? I could barely keep my Krispies on my spoon at breakfast this morning, I was shaking so much in eager anticipation of the half dozen or so signings I expect St. Mart to complete today. Rumour has it that we might even be bringing on board, something we haven't witnessed at Villa Park in a long, long time, namely a proven quality premiership striker, capable of netting us a minimum of 15 goals per season. That might just be a bit too far fetched though, so I've dismissed that possibility from my thoughts. Agree with AVbornand bred in that I'll be somewhat disappointed to see the departure of Nicky Shorey. I rate the guy, and believe that he would have been well worth keeping at Brummagem B6, even if only to boost the squad numbers. Recent performances, dating back to the latter stages of last season, suggest that there was a good footballer in there, and I certainly dont think that he has let us down since his recall back into the starting line-up. Oh well, we all move on in our lives I guess, so good luck to him. Any takers one has to wonder for Salifou and/or Harewood? No, thought not.

So net spend this transfer window is now about 20m with Collins and Dunne coming in. Im pretty sure thats our budget all gone even though in theory we are 20m in profit from the premier league TV money.......Go and get Van De Vaart you dithering fool.

Is it really too much to ask for us fans to have 1 top european player to rave about?? Our team has been crying out for a creative midfielder and quality striker for the past 10 years but its never addressed. Teams need big name signings to generate excitement, media attention and shirt sales.

That's the problem Tarzan and always has been for Villa. We sign a player who is going to be massive in 1 or 2 season's time, by which time the few quality players we have are off to teams who have success not going to have it. Then the cycle starts again.

Why did we leave the Dunne deal so late to sort out if MON wanted him! Why wasn't he part of the Barry deal? More bumbling in the transfer market and no world class replacements for the players we have lost. We keep getting told we can't attract good players until we become successful, well we keep managing to get rid of them.

The only thing James Collins brings to Villa Park is flame red hair and that isn't pretty either. Richard Dunne whilst bring a "massive unit" is slow and unreassuring and the only benefit I can see in signing him is for the season ticket holders in row Z who'll now see more of the ball. Dunne is a signing for a team where we were and not where we went to go unless he's a squad player. Hence City selling him. Why didn't we just get Upson for £15m instead of 2 average PL? players? Or even test the Claret and Blue blood in Joleon Lescott and propose Everton £10m + Carlos Cuellar instead of Collins. Everton may have consider us after the City dealings. There are 2 big losers today and they are Clark and Lowry.

On a more positive side. We should be very happy with Downing, Delph, and Warnock. Downing and Warnock are top class top 4 players. With a selection of L Young, A Young, Milly, Downing, Warnock, Petrov, Carew, Agbonlahor making up half a top quality side we really needed true quality at the back. Upson/Hangeland/Lescott? Villa leaked 48 goals in the league last year and I don't see this improving
