Sylvain Distin? Transfer Talk - 8 Days To Go!

Sylvain Distin? Transfer Talk - 8 Days To Go!

8 days to go...(Transfer window closes 5pm Tuesday 1 Sept)

I'm running late today, apologies!

Sky Sport 'understand' ... and when they say 'understand' unlike the papers, these guys usually know... that Villa have made a bid for Portsmouth's 31-year-old French defender Sylvain Distin.

He's been linked a million times this summer to Villa and several times to Everton as well as a return to Manchester City. The link would certainly make sense.

The Sun have gone one further and claimed the defender has 'stunned' the Fratton Park folks by putting in a transfer request with Villa, Everton and Sunderland all interested. Am I losing the very few marbles I've got left or was that not said earlier in the summer also? That reports claim he'd cost around £5m

I'll try and get an interview from the Vital Pompey guys about him.

The Daily Mirror say that Everton might be about to bid £5m for Boro's German centre back Robert Huth who we have also been linked with. They claim that they also want former Villa and now Bolton defender Gary Cahill but are being put off by the £10m price tag.

Another report claims former Arsenal, Portsmouth and Spurs defender Sol Campbell has snubbed a move to Villa in favour of Notts County, truth be told I can't even be bothered to open up the link to the report... even I have my limits gossip wise! :o)

id take cahill back for £10m without a doubt. which makes me think, did we put a sell on clause into the deal when we sold him? if not we really shoulda done!

Can someone please enlighten me as to the official reason as to why we actually sold Gary Cahill?

just a manager decision I think, Cahill was probably pushing wanting a first team place and obviously we had Mellberg/Laursen ahead... with these things we never really know, might have been personality conflicts or it might just have been that MON didn't rate him or didn't think he was as close to regular first team action as the player did. I spoke with a youth team set up person who said he was a bit distraught by it as they had really rated Cahill. I do wish we'd not sold him but I guess the managers head is the one on the block so only his opinion counts on such things.

The Sylvain Distin rumours have certainly been with us all summer long, and look like remaining active right down to the very wire. It was hardly a link to set the pulses racing way back when, and it hasn't increased the excitement levels as the summer weeks have passed us by. Thing is though, we are now somewhat desperate, arguably needing two central defenders, let alone one. Probably the only way that this deal will be completed, with Pompey seemingly not wanting to sell, is for the player to slap in a transfer request, something that you suggest above that he has done. With Curtis Davies' shoulder injury looking as though surgery may well be required sooner rather than later, MON will no doubt be very hopefully of bringing in Distin and a.n. other before the transfer window slams firmly shut. Its now a race against time.
