We Were Excellent Is The Verdict

Great stuff, we've not had an after match verdict this quick since erm last February, double bonus a win and I get to go to bed early!

Speaking on the official site after the shock 3-1 victory over 'title contenders' Liverpool tonight, Monny was positively glowing with praise for the team.

Rightly to, it was a phenomenal performance and each of them earnt their wages tonight. That is exactly the kind of commitment, desire and determination we expect to see from players pulling on the proud claret and blue.

'I just felt we were excellent. It's a tough place to come. I don't know if the lads had any thoughts in their heads about the last time we played but there was a great focus in the team.

'It's an enormous boost to us. You are under pressure constantly here no matter who you may be and to get that second goal in terms of confidence gave us a great lift.

'In the second-half we knew there was going to be great pressure. But I felt we always had the ability to conjure up something else because there are goals in the team.

'I thought we defended very strongly in midfield as well. Just the overall effort of the team was there for all to see.'


O'Neill also commented that it was the perfect response to our 'form' so far this season after our back to back losses to Wigan and Rapid Vienna, and it was exactly the kind of response he had wanted to see.

I think I can echo all Villan's tonight in saying it's exactly the kind of response we had wanted to see aswell.

Now let's carry this on against Vienna and get our season properly back on track.

Sorry but because we beat the scouse 1-3 when on performance we were very lucky not to lose 7-1 does not constitute "perfect response to our form", we were still poor tonight and the fact Torres and his band of cheats shot them selves in the feet with their constant "he elbowed me in the face" rants (even when no one was near them) made it easier for us..........Wigan won us by 2 goals and deserved it but did we really deserve to win tonight? na

Hey Doc, it was plain to see the effort our lads put in was 110% but the reason we wasn't losing 2-0 in the first 10 mins was because the scouse was trying to get our players sent off, Torres (sir dive-alot) should have had 7 yellow cards in that game (including the one he got) but he didnt, Lucas should have been sent off from the challanges he put in but didnt, we won but it was lucky, an own goal, a penalty no question and a set piece, as a manager its not how i would want to win

Astonian...were u in Estonia?.. U clearly have no idea...a manager will take a win any which way and be happy...winners are grinner's mate and losers can go..please themselves... A great team display..no it was not world shatteringly brilliant football but what do u expect?..It had everything a fan of this club wants...commitment..and a justified result!

personally i want my team to win because they were the better team not because i love the club and we didnt have to rely on our oppo's strikers having a *****e day, i have said from the start that im villa through and through yet im already seeing "members" putting their twopence worth in just because we won??? .... sorry but i prefer to see our team win on merit not occasional effort (excuse my spelling please)

At this stage I couldn't give a monkeys if we won by playing glorious football or by getting a couple of lucky breaks - a wins a win. Of course we all want to watch spectacular football, but we'd also like to watch Champions league football - there's no way I'll complain if we won through a bit of luck.

Firsrtly, I have to say that I am delighted with the win, thought that most of the team were outstanding, especially Sidders, NRC and Stan. I do have to say though that I thought Gabby looked a little off the pace, at time I expected him to tearing down the flank in the first half, but he just meandered his way forward allowing players from deeper to sprint forward in support, and at time the only player we had going forward was NRC. A couple of time last night we did look like the Villa of pre Feb last season, but as great a result as it was, we still have an awful lot to sort out, and getting Gabby back to his best is one of them!

Last night was a fantastic result, however the squad is still small, and MON's seeming lack of confidence in Johnny Foreigner (with regards to the transfer market) is depressing. He's silenced his doubters for now. Fulham is now a "must not lose".

astonian villain, i really dont know what u expect, nobody goes to anfield and dominates them, has more possession and plays hem off the park, what u have to do is make it difficult for them, restrict them and hit them on the break, which is exactly what we did. gabby worked tirelessly upfront making it difficult for their back 4 on his own up there, thats what we have been crying out for him to do. it was your classic away performance and i for one, thoroughly enjoyed my night

MON is perfectly justified in being upset with the fans right now, to boo the team at half time against wigan was a disgrace, the first 45 minutes of the new campaign & people have already made there minds up? unbelievable!, it is a new team with young players, they need our encouragement & our full support - not booing, call yourselves supporters, u r anything but. At the start of the seaon we should be behind the team 100% pushing them on to do there best, not knocking them after the first 45 minutes! Last night proved we have the right manager & with a few more additions that will arrive - the right team. If some of these fans continue to moan & boo our TEAM so early on in a season then we will probably end up loosing the best manager we have had in years & knock all confidence out of the team. I am not saying don't ever be disapointed or never show your disapointment just at least choose the correct time to do it. Sorry for going on but this really needs to be said, be positive villa fans! i am convinced some people are only happy if they are moaning, what a sad existence that must be.

The booing debate will go on and on I'm sure. personally I don't think villa fans are any better, or worse, than any others. Some boo, some don't, it always seems to be the minority that do to me, as against Wigan for instance.

Thing is, for me Astonian Villan if I see the lads give 110%, win lose or draw, I'm usually happy, only time I get miffed is when they don't look interested or don't turn up, then it is an insult. Think that is pretty fair expectation. Agree Friedel was great, did think Curtis Davis also put in a very good display though

thing is the booing is done by what, 10% of the crowd? It sounds loud but we all remember the real boos and chants, they were much louder and totally different. Teh interviews with him about the boo boys makes it sound like it is all of us, which is a real shame, a few hecklers in the Trinity compared to the rest, what about 10 000?

Bodidley matters not if I agree/disagree/took part I understand it. Wigan was a total continuation of everything served up last season, so was Vienna so I more than understand it and I think it's childish of our manager to keep attempting to spin it to him out to be the Messiah and being picked on by nasty fans. Now if he came out and talked about 3 wins in 19 games instead of hiding behind a 6 place finish, or even spent time talking about how we capitulated 4th place (8 points clear remember) to finish 6th and not make it sound like 6th place was a phenomenal achievement maybe I'd have more time for him. PR's all well and good, the proof of the pudding is so many fall for it. Blimey Monny didn't hear booing against Liverpool, yet everyone else and their dog did...but no that was aimed at the ref wasn't it PMSL

Mike, you might want to read the new article just posted regarding booing, it says it all. If you agree/understand booing the team then do us all a favour & go & support small heath, enough said!

I am not disputing that our performance has been poor, i am just stating that people who boo are not supporters & very sad individuals who contribute to our poor performance, i will never agree with or understand supporters booing my team, THAT is what the subject matter is, now s o d off bluenose

I'm simple, you're the one who keeps going personal lol So people who care enough about the *****e served infront of them to boo instead of blindly supporting and thinking it'll all work out for the best don't have the clubs best interests at heart...they aren't supporters because they care, and they are one of the reasons for our pathetic form.
