'If It's Football, It's Vital'

Who Has The Most Passionate Footie Fans?

I have been chatting to a freelance scriptwriter who is doing some footie research. I've answered some questions as I'm undoubtedly the most fascinating person in the world (official and FACT)

One question he just came up with is:

could you list the top five football clubs within the country that have the most passionate fans.

I think it is virtually impossible to say really, ask any fan of any club and they will say their team surely!?

So far before saying I'd start this thread I was saying:

Villa (my team) have amongst the best away support and our Holte End, similar to Liverpool's (see next one) Kop really is an excellent end of goal stand, although we've possibly made less noise in recent years .

Liverpool I'd say are the best at home in the PL and always have a good away following as well.

Pompey (which the person asked about), not so sure really, they have the bell ringer (I know where I'd stick that bell - it drives me mad) some of the lower league fans are great as well and certainly go through very hard times but stick with their teams through thick and thin.

SO without bias, who do you think are the best, not just PL?

I would say villa have the worst set of fans,Seeing the way the newcastle fans still supported their team after getting relegated at villa park it put us to shame,We boo our team after a bad half.

I gotta say I think most sets of home fans around the country are rubbish yet most away fans are good. My club (Chelsea) is a prime example. The atoms these days at the Bridge is a morgue (*sigh*) yet our away contingent always vocal. Personally I’ve never rated the Pool home crowd. A great rendition of YNWA at the start, 5 mins from the end and a few choruses of a choon when they score/take a lead and that’s it. (at least on a week to week basis, natch they can turn it on for big games such as the CL semis against us). From my experience the Pompy fans seemingly sing long, loud and on mass from all four sides of the ground, not just one end behind the goal. Even when losing.

Why are any set of fans less (or more) passionate about their club than the other? Sure, some clubs don't have as many passionate fans but then few clubs have as many fans as Villa/Liverpool/Chelsea.
Dink.

Two of the most passionate I've come across are Feyenord and Sunderland.

rubbish lerner, you just have a downer on the fans at the moment as if 'the fans' are all one and the same. We've had our hard times and all been there... you'll get many a fan remind you of the old 2nd and 3rd division days.

I think part of our problem as Brummies is that we are naturally a reserved bunch so sometimes we comes across as more apathetic than what we are. To be fair our home support is rubbish but then most grounds are. When I go away with the Villa, the support is absolutely mental, and I contribute with the singing to the point where I lose my voice every time. At home I am as guilty of anyone of contributing to the library atmosphere! That may be because I drink at away games, where as I don't at home games, but it is still how it is. But then, wherever we go away, the home support is usually rubbish.

Got to consider Leeds in there somewhere, still pack out elland road despite their misfortunes over the years. Also i think villa are brilliant, never a silent away day. Holte needs to pick back up i think

balls ! We are no different to any set of fans, running this network I see other fans comments all the time and they are no different, Spurs were all moaning about no signings earlier in the summer, Chelsea too, Arsenal last year were having questions over Wenger, fans are passionate and reactive.

depends if you have to measure the fans in an mathmatical equation. quantity fans x volume divided by (how crap team is) you must surely say Small Heath! Simply because of the last part of the equation!

IMO it has to be Sunderland. Every time I have ever met a Sunderland supporter in my life I have been amazed/scared by the passion they show for their side. These guys would quite literally die for their club given the opportunity.

this proves the point I was making to the script writer though, you can't really just list the top five, we all think differently.

I know I'm the third person to say it but the North East club's fans show unbelieveable passion. The toon army have always been renowned for their support, which unfortunately has waned slightly in the last couple of seasons as the club has slowly self destructed under the guidance of of beer swilling yob Mike Ashley. Sunderland on the other-hand who are always trying to prove (and I think now have!) that they are not 'the other team in the NE' are passionate beyond belief! I used to live with a Mackem and when Sunderland lost it was like he'd been shot in the arm!
