Monday's Transfer Talk - 9 Days To Go!

9 days to go...

According to reports today Everton are set to sell Joleon Lescott to the Man City £ullies and will have funds for a replacement centre back. The Times says Bolton Wanderers (grumble grumble) defender Gary Cahill as well as supposed Villa targets Robert Huth and David Wheater are being considered. Shame Cahill isn't under consideration for a return to Villa, so much better than any defender brought in since his departure!

The Mirror claim Villa are set for a second raid on Newcastle United with a bid for England U21 central defender Steven Taylor.

The report says Taylor has impressed for the Under-21s and made a name for himself, but his form has been mixed for Newcastle during their last year of troubles.

The Mirror also claim that Martin O'Neill ran the rule over Wigan's Austrian defender Paul Scharner. You've got to smile at the timing, Man Utd ripped them apart 5-0. I had thought he was there to make a check on Rooney before bidding! ;o)

The Telegraph repeat the link to West Ham defender James Collins who we apparently want for £5million. Forum thread on the link: Click Here

Another in The Mirror claims that Big Sam of Blackburn Rovers has set a 48-hour deadline for Villa to sign Steven Warnock. Reports are as yet unconfirmed that MON feinted at the thought of making a signing so quickly! :o)

The report says that Villa wanted to pay £8m and thought they'd get the player in time for tonight's game against Liverpool but that Rovers want more dosh.

And on Vital Blackburn: Blackburn manager Sam Allardyce has insisted left back and Aston Villa target Stephen Warnock was left out yesterday as he wasn't mentally ready for the game and he won't sell Stephen on the cheap. Allardyce Explains A Twist In The Warnock Tale

Wesley Sneijder who it now seems was rather fancifully linked to Villa this summer, says: 'I want to play at Real Madrid. I don't want to leave because I know I am capable of being an important part of this team.'

yep any club can hold us to ransom now , that's how Newcastle got £12m for Milner. England u21's tend to go for far less than that !

Blackburn say we have 48 hrs to come and get warnock, seems they're saying what we said to Liverpool, so because MON wont be held to ransom that deal now looks unlikely.

I think Scharner is Austrian not Australian! No wonder he let 5 in! Shame he's not playing for Rapido Vienna!
leelindsay
On Vital Newcastle they are really concerned about losing Stephen Taylor as they all reckon that he always gives 110% and they would really struggle without him

Just shows how our aspirations are waining, calling Warnock 'a great signing' VDV or Sniedjer would be great signings, Warnock, Collins, Huth etc not so much.

No, I was rushing with the excitement of all the links and said Australian. Close though, both are in Europe at least! :o))))

more of the same old same old.... weve heard all of these before, I know you cant invent what is not being reported, but this is the most boring transfer window I can remember! i just hope it ends soon. we will get in a center back of less quality than Knight and that will be that. Lost our best two players and brought in a 19 year old, a guy with a broken foot, a slow right back, a really crappy keeper and possibly a championship right back! I feel sick!

Why are we linked with Scharner? The player came out and said in January he didn't want to come to us. All the paper talk is rubbish!

I find it amusing that some are moaning like crazy that we are "buying championship players" and "no hopers from relegated teams", while others are asking why we haven't bought Tuncay yet ...

Anyone else sick at being linked with 'last years player of the season' from other clubs and relegated defenders? There's a reason why teams get relegated and its beacause they let in too many goals. Non of the players we've ben linked with are top 4 quality apart from Upson (maybe). This window has let me down in terms of both numbers and quality......Get read for the panic buy button to be pressed.

So, Son of Cher, presumably you wouldn't have bought Lescott when Moyes did, as he was then a Championship player with Wolves? And of course there's no way you would have paid good money for Ashley Young. Good players can come from anywhere; the operative phrase is that they played in a relegated team; that team was probably relegated for all sorts of reasons, and almost certainly contained some really decent players. I see top managers buying 'relegated players' all the time, and I'm guessing they know more than you and me. Michael Owen, anyone?

BTB, your original post is somewhat poor by your standards. Everyone has different views and some have suggested we should buy the likes of Hangelaand, Sneijder and Van Der Vaart. I know which players I would rather see wearing a Villa shirt and the ones moaning about signing relegation players probably have a little ambition and hope. It is a balancing act between buying quality off the shelf and maybe finding talent on the cheap. However for the Villa faithful it has been much of the latter over the history of the Club, with any quality we have being sold off before a team that is capable of making any serious challenge for the league is established.

Aplogies for wanting defenders that are better than Distin, Beye, Warnock, Collins, Wheater, Taylor and Huth. To break the top 4 we surely need to aim higher......or am i just being fickle???

seems a real split on what we all expect to be honest son_of_cher. I thought we'd be going for better now, it appears not so I might just try to lower expectations as many seem to think 6th is great success, maybe if we celebrate that and don't worry about actually winning things, we'll be happier?!

Im just so frustrated about the Laursen/Barry replacements its unreal. MON should have really sorted this ages ago. I respect his philosephy to buy English 100% but if there are no English players available to replace our 2 most influential players then you surely have to look abroad? You cant leave holes like that and expect to mirror last season.........MON needs to bite the bullet and fulfill his and Randy's promise by bringing quality players to VP that will help raise the fans optimism

I am actually ok with the links. Don't get me wrong I would love to see the likes of a Sneijder and Hangeland in the papers, but that just isn't going to happen. And it doesn't really worry me. I think right now we just need to get some depth and competition going for starting spots in the squad. I am a big believer in inner-squad competition making players better and work harder. I also think that right now our players aren't a huge problem, it really is the fact that we are trying to accommadate a striker that shouldn't be in our first team. 4-5-1 to get our midfield possession going and I think we would be in fantastic shape. (I know this will ***** some people off) Look at how Arsenal builds up, they don't just skip the midfield and throw it onto the wings, they use their midfield to draw defenders in and exploit the open space. So lets do that!

We as fans deserve a quality striker too, every team needs their superstar striker. MON has only spent 7m (Hesko and Harewood) on our attack since he joined which IMO has been our weakest link since Angel had 1 good season.
