MON's Post Vienna Verdict

Martin O'Neill says Villa are able to come back from the 1-0 loss v Rapid Vienna and beat the Austrian team on home turf next Thursday.

Villa, who are still in the play off stages of the competition, have a 'big week' according to MON who says it should be 'exciting'.

He told AVTV after another poor display: 'I think we're well in the tie. It's not just bravado - I think the second leg will be a fantastic match. We are just going to have to just go out there at Villa Park and try and win the game. And I think we're capable of doing that.'

At least it does set us up for the home game, we've got to go out and win it, none of the boring European chess match type of thing!

He also says you can't really 'legislate' for going down after 16 seconds ''I thought we fought strongly after that to try and get ourselves back into the game.'

Brad Guzan pulled off a great save and Curtis Davies cleared off the line, not sure we really pulled any real saves from their keeper.

MON said he knew 'it wasn't going to be an easy game and I thought Rapid played very well indeed. It was a great atmosphere - it was relentless - and they kept it up all evening. The crowd were right behind their team and I thought their players responded to that too.'

How bad was it?! I was dragged to the theatre, but my brother said we played ok. However, on here it sounds worse than the Wigan game!!! Which is bloody saying something!

Well the real story in my opinion is that we played better than we did against wigan, but it shud not detract from the fact the we hardly had even 2 decent attempts on goal and looked like a disjointed team, it does not bode well for mondays trip to Liverpool. We are really not looking great.

We had chances, but wasted them. Their goalie was not tested, because we missed the goal, every good chance went as a shot wide. The biggest chance had Jimmy Milner, but missed. Also Gaby crossed low for 10 meters when we were 3 attackers on 1 defender, he should cross the ball via air. We could and should gather at least draw.

It was average at best, it could have been worse / all over results wise really. If you put a striker up front who doesn't score, I guess it will be a struggle. MON is right, going to be a very interesting and could be exciting game next week. Wonder if the Europa is worth the hassle when we have a squad so small though... thought we'd have 5-6 new players to compete this season, as we haven't maybe the priority question will start all over again, if so, I'd rather we went out now rather than throw it away later...!
