'If It's Football, It's Vital'

MON's Post Vienna Verdict

Martin O'Neill says Villa are able to come back from the 1-0 loss v Rapid Vienna and beat the Austrian team on home turf next Thursday.

Villa, who are still in the play off stages of the competition, have a 'big week' according to MON who says it should be 'exciting'.

He told AVTV after another poor display: 'I think we're well in the tie. It's not just bravado - I think the second leg will be a fantastic match. We are just going to have to just go out there at Villa Park and try and win the game. And I think we're capable of doing that.'

At least it does set us up for the home game, we've got to go out and win it, none of the boring European chess match type of thing!

He also says you can't really 'legislate' for going down after 16 seconds ''I thought we fought strongly after that to try and get ourselves back into the game.'

Brad Guzan pulled off a great save and Curtis Davies cleared off the line, not sure we really pulled any real saves from their keeper.

MON said he knew 'it wasn't going to be an easy game and I thought Rapid played very well indeed. It was a great atmosphere - it was relentless - and they kept it up all evening. The crowd were right behind their team and I thought their players responded to that too.'

How bad was it?! I was dragged to the theatre, but my brother said we played ok. However, on here it sounds worse than the Wigan game!!! Which is bloody saying something!

Well the real story in my opinion is that we played better than we did against wigan, but it shud not detract from the fact the we hardly had even 2 decent attempts on goal and looked like a disjointed team, it does not bode well for mondays trip to Liverpool. We are really not looking great.
Pablo1978
We had chances, but wasted them. Their goalie was not tested, because we missed the goal, every good chance went as a shot wide. The biggest chance had Jimmy Milner, but missed. Also Gaby crossed low for 10 meters when we were 3 attackers on 1 defender, he should cross the ball via air. We could and should gather at least draw.

It was average at best, it could have been worse / all over results wise really. If you put a striker up front who doesn't score, I guess it will be a struggle. MON is right, going to be a very interesting and could be exciting game next week. Wonder if the Europa is worth the hassle when we have a squad so small though... thought we'd have 5-6 new players to compete this season, as we haven't maybe the priority question will start all over again, if so, I'd rather we went out now rather than throw it away later...!

It was as described by others " average at best" it wasnt as bad as Wigan but that's not saying a lot we dint have a team out there we had 11 strangers, clueless and leaderless The wheels have fallen off and the management team seem to have no idea how to fix it, there shilly shalling in the Transfer window is now repliclated on the Park Be afraid, be very affraid. i KNOW i AM

Definitely not as bad as Wigan but still a totally disjointed performance. Nothing new to say unfortunately. There's sort of a Plan A that's not working but then we resort to Plan B which is to hoof the ball upfield and hope. Sadly you can't point to one area and say if only we fixed that it would make the difference. The defence is disorganised, the midfield lacks guile and the forwards lack goals. Other than that no problem! And the players appeared to be bickering amongst themselves on a regular basis. Certainly Heskey was having a good go at Gabby on a couple of occasions.

I've taken up nettle eating. Its more fun than football. But it does have some similarities - An idiot competing, aggresive crowd shouting unnecessary advice when they definitely couldn't do any better, a post match interview with the competitor who can't speak properly and can't wait to throw down several gallons of refreshments and forget about the bad experience thats just occured. Just a thought!

How did Nigel and Sidders play? Added a bit more bite to midfield?

ive been thinking how downing could actually fit into the team and ive thought that maybe if we play that 3 man midfield then he could play lcm? he could be the replacement for barry, he has pace, creativity, he can tackle and is a hard worker but apart from that its a waste of 12m, GET VAN DER VAART!! would be great 3 man midfield van der vaart, petrov, downing(sidwell). if he plays that formation anyway which knowing him it will be 442 with 2 donkeys upfront heskey and harewood!

Don't be silly. When Downing is fit we will play with ONE in the middle and THREE wingers. Add ONE centre back (the other one injured) and there's a team to take on the world!!

who is bothered about where and if downing plays? if we carry on as in our last 2 performances, and last 18 games, we will be in the relagation zone before he kicks a ball! we desperately need a creative striker/offensive midfielder like Tuncay, plus at least one quality centre back or we will be finished in the PL!

villa_de we wont be in relegation zone thats 2 far, and we should care about downing when paying 12m for him(wat a joke) as he could actually he a good player 4 us maybe. and about u saying we will be in relegation thats very unrealistic as we will beat most the teams still and as much as o'neil is useless so far in the transfer window and he is p*****g me off the transfer window isnt over yet so still might be some surprises. hopefully :/

why is it doom mongering fullygrownman? You are never going to get people happy after a loss are you? Current form: 6 draws, 8 losses, 3 wins in last 17 games (7 losses if you aren't counting the Europa game)
